  3. Electronics failures do impact the scores. Until you can demonstrate with evidence that it in some way "not enough", I'm not sure that there's a real point to your suggestion. Ask the Bluecoats in San Antonio if electronics failures impact score...

  4. You're *grossly* overestimating the costs associated with electronics and amplification. It's far less than many people think it is.

  7. Fair enough, didn't think it was a hard question though. There are decades of musical selection without electronics to choose from. Was just curious of some that people though would be interesting with the addition. I might as well add "Crown should have won", "Blue Devils should win everything, every time", "Star '93 is the best show ever", and "Bluecoats' electronics are ruining the activity" while I'm posting as these seem to be the hot choices right now.

  9. It was Blue Knights (with the mirrors). The entire hornline was on mellophones and Baritones before breaking out into trumpets and tubas. The Mandarins had their guard playing brass for one section of their show.

  10. Far and away... and its not even close in my mind....... Chien Kuo. It was a seminal moment in the activity, far beyond anything ever produced before on a competition field in the last 50 years, imo. 8/ 6/ 2015. Remember the date for you history buffs here. It was a first. And probably not even noted by most followers of the activity at the time either. Chien Kuo utilized Brass & Woodwinds ( ie Clarinets, Flutes, Saxophones, Trombones, etc ) to effectively best 6 other DCI units in the DCI Quarterfinals. The day we were told would never happen in DCI Field Competition, ( clarinets, flutes, various woodwinds, etc in DCI Field Competition ) not only happened, it happened, then passed with neither a wimper from anyone. It was a truly an amazing seminal moment in DCI Field competition, imo. I felt a bit bad for the 6 units that lost to this Band that did not avail themselves of the full spectrum of marching band instrumentation that was available to themselves this season. Had they utilized the broader Band instrumentation that Chien Kuo utilized at DCI Quarterfinals this year, then perhaps they might have topped this unit in the all important DCI Quarterfinals. But... we'll never really know for certain now, of course.

  13. Not too crazy about the fact that they're doing music they've done in the past, but I'm excited to see what they can do with a dark concept. How about the traditional green uniforms with black pants? #MadisonBlackout?

  14. I like it. "Heaven on Their Minds" was a strong opener (and, IMO, the only part from the musical I really enjoy). A whole show based around that, and the basic idea of Judas, has a ton of musical/emotional potential. I'll start drinking the Green/Red/Gold Kool-Aid.

  17. Although new to this thread, I'd like to offer another proposal. I have read the comments where even most of the locals didn't know about the Championships being held. To fill this void, DCA should hire a part time publicist, preferably from the Rochester area. Offer him or her a commission of a buck or two on each ticket sold above the 2015 paid admissions baseline. A thousand more fans in the stands would be a couple of thousand bucks in their pocket and $30,000 more to DCA. This would be a worthwhile investment for DCA as they're currently not making ANYTHING on those unsold seats. Yes, I know that the DCA organization is all volunteer, but if we're to grow the brand, investments must be made.

  19. Building on the success of sixteen measures buried in the '96 show, it's definitely going to be an all John Tesh show.

  20. Wow ... Keith Markey ... I'm not sure if people here realize the influence his arrangements had on the broad range of corps he wrote tunes for beyond his association with the Air Force Corps ... terrific guy taken from us far too early in life ... he marched 72 Sky (I think on 2nd sop even though his forte was bari) and wrote a haunting rendition of Schindler's List for Sky's Alumni just before he passed ... it had a great amount of passion in each note and strain ... the perfect docile intro to a robust and powerful Hava ... I think it was his personal tribute to Hy ... :-)

  21. Oh, but MisterA, it was so cutting edge and is moving the activity in directions unheard of, and is more important than Star 93...oh wait, that's what we're supposed to feel...

  22. In the years I've been teaching DCA, I'd say that easily 99% of the members of the corps I've taught marched in high school bands. It absolutely IS where they come from.

  23. I'll be honest, I really don't want to hear anything else featuring electronics. Bluecoats 2014 was a great show, but Bluecoats 2015 was just dreadful. Way too much synth. But after hearing close up videos of the hornline this season, I can see why they tried to cover it up with synth. Check out the videos on youtube, and you'll see why. Ouch.

  25. This is surely a brief moment, and probably one that few would consider either momentous or highly innovative, but it is a moment that fully caught my attention and remains for me as one of those neat little gems that make me smile. 2013 Bluecoats opening minute. Military commands, corps in parade block, guard "in the stands", and the parade begins. Quick transition into Paul Simon's "America". First big hit. Then the simple gem: transition into a snippet of Sousa's "Washington Post" played in such a way as to sound like a marching band moving away and heard from a distance. Nothing earth-shattering, but a nicely thought out and designed opener (especially the Sousa snippet) that just worked for me

  27. wow - I don't think Indy is nearly as expensive as London (which is on par with New York) I like the JW Marriott - a short walk from the stadium, terrific property and wonderful service The Westin is a nice option for a business class hotel There are others further up the food chain and a bunch of 3 stars Big thing is - stay near the convention center and/or Lucas Oil Stadium. Don't stay at the airport - it's miles from anything including the event Good luck!

  28. 1981 2-7: The marching tymp feature in Crown Imperial as the hornline plays the backfield chorale...simply a 10, and if DCI were in a perfect world those 4 players would be inducted as an ensemble into the DCI HOF. (added bonus: watch a video of the tymp guys during New Country (the '81 drum solo), and watch how they pull off the glissando before the snare feature.) 1987 SCV: The high mark time at the end of RCM...in your face, no apologies drum corps. 1988 Suncoast Sound: the last drill move and horn impact that ends the show. 1993 Star: The feature where the hornline is in a wedge shape, and the brass has a simple "Bop...Bee dah" phrase...on the "bop" each member does a rocking motion/leg lean in an opposite direction from the member in front, then on the "bee dah" they switch and lean the other (opposite) way. Hugely effective when combined with the stark uniforms on a green field. 2004 SCV: The opening 16 bars which made me sit back and say, "Wow, they CAN play loud." 2013 Crown: opening statement...would love to see Crown revisit Also Sprach Z but do so in the same fashion that Brazilian keyboardist Eumir Deodato did in 1972 with his famous jazz arrangement of the piece (available on Youtube, turn it way up.) A previous poster mentioned the Tenderland hit in '84 SCV...thanks, it was a pleasure to play.

  30. Repertoire from Broadway shows translated beautifully to drum corps, starting with the Skyliners version of "Oaklahoma", written for them in the '50s by Jim Donnelly. For years we could count on new production numbers flowing from sources like West Side Story, Funny Girl, Fiddler, La Mancha, Promises, Hair, Night Music, Flower Drum Song, South Pacific, Miss Saigon, Cats..etc. It seemed positively endless, and the great arrangers like Crawford, Norman, Dreitzer, Sasso, Genero, Duffy, Markey, Baumgardt and the rest all had their individual takes on these themes, each of their signature styles almost instantly recognizable in just a few notes.

  33. Gotta chime in on one issue here. I have to respectfully disagree with the concept of increasing attendance by "making DCA more competitive". First of all, I'm not sure what is implied by that. Let's call a spade a spade and focus this conversation on Bucs. Their winning streak is unprecedented and like them or not they have been at the pinnacle of the activity for a very long time. Are we supposed to just give another corps a championship just because Bucs have been too long at the top? REALLY? If that's the case, I don't want it. I am in one of those corps chasing Buccaneers and I can guarantee you that it is because of their excellence, and that of others, that my corps has gotten significantly better over the past several years. There is absolutely nothing I would like to see more than my corps being announced in first place, but when/if that should ever happen, I want to know that we beat Bucs (or Cabs, or MBI or C2 or whomever) at their best. I am not interested in a hollow gift of a championship. The same argument happens on the DCI side with people complaining about Blue Devils. Who do you think is driving the continued growth and improvement of the other corps? Bucs...you just keep on raising that bar. It's pushing us and driving us to better and better products. I don't have the answer to DCA's attendance issues but I can tell you they are not due to the success of any one of it's member corps. I would like to think that it is the quality of our product that puts people in the seats...not the number of championships we have. If that were the case then our home show would have zero attendance since we have zero Open Class championships. Doesn't make sense to me. Just my 2 cents. Dan

  34. Read somewhere here that a lot of the booing, esp. at Cavies was supposedly because the Cavies had turned in the Muchachos. Lot of angry folks who considered the Muchachos as the Great White Hope from the East....
