  3. What the heck are you talking about? LOL. I guess I didn't make myself clear with how I worded that first line. These horns are NOT out of tune, with the right training. The Raiders didn't sound out of tune to me. And they have a good teaching staff. I mentioned "in the right hands" and "great brass teachers" in my earlier post. Why on Earth would great brass teachers want their players to play out of tune? Why would they want to put instruments in those players' hands that would lead to those players struggling to play properly? So... to sum up: In the right hands, with the proper teaching, I think these instruments are terrific. Again: In the right hands, with the proper teaching, I think these instruments are terrific. Is that better? Sheesh.

  4. Actually ALL 4 of last year's tenors are back. They decided to add a 5th for 2017. I believe the 2017 percussion section may have the most returning vets in Coats history. 4 returning tenors + 4 returning basses + 5 returning snares + most of the front ensemble returning (5 of the 6 mallet pods) along with some OUTSTANDING new folks + Roger Carter and his techs returning + Tom Rarick returning = MUCH FUN IN CANTON!!!!

  8. I played one for 11 of the 12 seasons I marched, in junior corps and DCA all-age corps. I'm a fan, too!!! LOL Those #### things were tough to keep under control... but man, in the right hands (bolded for Corpsband....)... meaning the players, and the arrangers... what a sound. Our principal arranger when I was on French horn with DCA's Sunrisers.... John Arietano... had a real knack for writing for the midrange voices. He tended to use our French horn line as an upper baritone voice, a mid-or-lower mellophone voice, or a voice all our own... many times all three in the same song. Made it fun to play his stuff!!! Gotta be honest here, at the risk of sounding egotistical.... we (Sun) had one heck of a Frenchie line when I was there. We had one guy, my first two years there, 1977-78, who was one of the best I've ever heard on that instrument, DCI, DCA, anywhere in drum corps... and the rest of us were solid "line players" who worked really well as a team and got it done.

  9. Actually the Garfield Christmas show is one of my favorite shows of all time. Seriously. Loved it.

  10. IMO if product A helps an ensemble play in tune better than product B, the so-called advantages of B become irrelevant. Why is it better to be loudly out-of-tune?

  11. Ok - lets have some off-season fun (Is it June yet?): What shows will we never see in DCI competition? I'll start: Springtime for Hitler Swear Words in Braille Josef Stalin's Favorite Love Songs

  12. If that's the case, why is Jupiter still in the game? Why is BD still with King instead of using Yamaha? In my opinion, Yamaha have nothing on Kanstul, but very few groups uses them. Until the day Drum Corps International becomes Marching Band International, the desire to hear the bugle sound will never go away.

  14. The Scouts have been with Yamaha since 1984, it will take a lot of convincing for them to drop Yamaha for my horns. They are curious about my products since many of theirI alums are using it. My Bb soprano bugle is becoming very popular among DCA cats, so the Scouts have seen my horns and expressed their curiosity. I do know that the staffs were at Bands of America two months ago to see Ayala HS's performance, to get a better understanding of the sound, presented in Bb form. There are two problems I'm facing. I cannot compete with Yamaha because I don't have the funds to furnish a whole line as a sponsor, and I don't know if the Scouts is getting their horns free, or they have to pay. And The biggest concern/challenge is the fact that it has been a generation since DCI abandoned G bugle, so the younger staff may have problem hearing/understand the bugle sound. I'll be taking a trip to visit the Scouts this weekend, I have made a lot of friends in that area since the founding of my company, maybe I can have a chat with the staff/director.

  16. If anyone has a little to hype about it's the Boston Crusaders crowd IMO. In terms of the new staff in the current era of DCI they have many top three finishes in each of the major captions, hands in 2 championship shows and countless other medalists and some of the more beloved shows in recent history. And they're playing it pretty cool. Excited obviously, some hype, but for the most part they're not even coming close overdoing it. They've been doing this Building a Champion thing in the business, outreach, and organizational side for quite a few years now. The corps is finally seeing the fruits of that labor with the team they've assembled and I'm sure over the next few years they'll be working towards that competitively. I'm excited. I don't think it's bad for a little of that. I understand being realistic and not getting ahead of yourself but I see more of that if this staff wouldn't really help them out in 2017 going into 2018. I'd be pretty hugely shocked if they aren't at least a little better than last year. Those members last year pulled absolute magic out of that show in the final weeks of 2016. I had them written off in Atlanta I think and what they were able to pull out of that thing by finals week was nothing short of amazing. It sure wasn't the show design. If I'm honest they had the 13th or 14th place show but the MMs did Champion level growth and sold every ounce of that show. The energy that show began and ended with from the members did it. Give those kinds of members a show that's just a little better? We shall see. Boston Crusaders are easily the most perplexing one to me going in.

  19. I absolutely loved this show, and consider it the final production in their dominant run. Everything about it, from musical to visual, was on par with Machine. Solid production. But you're right, it gets overshadowed by BD, Phantom and to some degree Crown from that year.

  24. Consistency is the key. The horns have to match EXACTly. That is why the Yamaha lines sound so good. You can play 20 yamaha trumpets and they will feel exactly the same.

  25. My take on the G vs Bb debate, after marching and teaching both of them, at very high and low levels of placement: 1) BITD, there were only a few EXCELLENT hornlines any given year. Today, the degradation of quality happens much further down the placements. Compare any 6th place hornline from the 90s with a 6th place hornline today (especially lot videos), and I think you'll agree that the modern 6th place hornline sounds better. Why? I suspect that B-flats are easier to play (smaller) and the players are more familiar with them, thus it doesn't take all summer to find the center! 2) Only when the Bb hornlines grew to 80 members (with 16 contras) did I stop longing for G bugles. Those who say they can't tell the difference, I envy you. I didn't even pay attention to drum corps between 2000 and 2006 (cuz i hated the 64-member Bb hornlines). By 2006, I was on staff (Bloo), vouching for larger contra lines, euphs, and larger hornlines. Finally, Crown made it crystal clear in 2008, and I didn't have to argue anymore. I've enjoyed all of the 80-member hornlines since then. Why? Acoustically, the "chorus effect" of having more players, combined with the larger ratio of contras has compensated for the large bores (but smaller numbers) of the G Bugle lines. Granted, I miss listening to the keys of C and G (awful on Bb), but the color change isn't as drastic (and I'm getting old...probably can't hear as well!) 3) In my dreamworld, I like the idea of bigger instruments (for outdoors), but I also like having more color in the spectrum. My sonic palette is mostly orchestral, so I like listening to things in "sharp keys," I'd probably use Bugles in G *and* C. IMagine a contra line with 8 contras in G and 8 in C (4th higher)...the kind of octaves you could get with that. The Euphs would be in G, and the baris in C. I'm a fan of the French Horn G Bugle, no matter how unwieldy...gimme a section of those! The Mellos and Trumpets would both have G and C, with the orchestral C Trumpet as my top voice. (Pic G for special occasions) Finally, can these new "B-flat Bugles" convey the richness and fatness of sound as an excellent G line? Can the manufacturer produce them at a lower price? (cuz no matter how good it is, it won't happen unless the price is cheaper than current Bb) Will they be easier to play than their G counterparts? Will the quality control be high enough that every instrument off the line will be indistinguishable from the next?

  27. Heard the Raiders with these horns at a couple of shows last summer. The horn line sounded bigger than their numbers, in a good way. Nice full sound. Would love to see more corps with these instruments!!!

  28. Been there and heard that. Current brass lines get more than enough volume and they play in tune. I like that more better!

  30. There is a HUGE difference IMO...as I played on one...I'm just curious...have you heard a world-class line LIVE on them?...Anyway...We are talking about a B-flat version here...that version is untested by a world-class corps in competition...I think two open-class corps and several marching bands have used them...but no one to my knowledge has yet to try the B-flat soprano in world-class yet...

  32. Or staff deciding they want another challenge after accomplishing all their goals at a previous Corps. Corps hopping in Drum Corps is the culture. As the saying goes, if you crave unquestioned, committed, devoted loyalty, buy a dog. As you won't find it in DCI Drum Corps much of the time. Good, bad or indifferent, thats the way it is. Did I predict the Blue Devils to medal this season on the 2017 prediction thrread, by the way ? If not, let me get this out of the way now, and predict BD will medal in 2017 all the way to 2067. Ok, so they might crumble one or 2 years during the next half century and finish a horrific 4th or 5th a time or 2,, before rebounding nicely to returning to medaling, or winning it all the next season. Whew, glad I at least got my annual medals prediction out of the way for the next half a century anyway with the Blue Devils in DCI.

  33. 2008 was a special year for Phantom Regiment... pulling off a huge upset at Finals Nite over BD, and the crowd going positively nuts with joy with their production of " Spartacus ". Sort of lost in that 2008 year of high drama, imo was the Cavaliers ( 3rd place ) production of " Samurai ". I really liked that show then. Sometimes, as the years go by, the show, music, might dull a bit. But for me, thats not been the case at all with this music, show from the Cavaliers. I loved the haunting melody moments in the show, and the percussion arrangements, with those drums, was very unusual and creative. 'Absolutely loved the sound of the Percussion arrangements across the board that year from the Cavaliers. Very fitting arrangements that fit the show theme of the " Samurai " well. Costumes were awesome. I think, because of the universal accolades that Phantom got for 2008, that this Cavaliers show fits my definition of " underrated ". I could easily have seen this quality show winning it all perhaps if it was not 2008.

  40. I've been with you on that since finals night in 2014. That would be not only an incredible show but an incredibly cool collaboration with an absolute legend in the jazz world. I just listened to 2014 again for the first time in awhile and have been looping the ending over and over again. Holy God that ending is everything I love about the Blue Devils.

  41. I'm really excited to see them back. It seems like they're being really smart, taking it slow, and have waited a few years to return to Indy. I fully expect they would have made Open Class finals pretty easily last year, fantastically put together little show. If they improve as much as they did from 2015 to 2016 we could be in for a real treat.

  42. I have been screaming this for about 4 years. I would pay triple the admission price to see that live. I hope one year they give us a GG show. Because if they did, all the people that said for BD fans to enjoy that 99.65 cause we will never see that score again would be correct, cause BD would pop a 99.80 with a GG show!

  46. Maybe they'll do music by David Gillingham. He did a beautiful band setting of "Be Thou My Vision" that could also be sung by a choral group. Mix it in with "Stained Glass" and you have the music I arranged back in 2007 for the marching band I work with.

  47. It's tough to judge the merits of the instrument given the quality of this audio, but I'd be interested in a live demo. I will point out, however, that the Hellcats of West Point have been using Bb sopranos for many years. These are single horizontal valve Bb/F instruments. Also, in the late 1920's, Conn introduced a Bb sop with an upright valve called the Little Scout. Other companies followed suit and many were used in the military and police corps, some later models featuring a horizontal piston. Also, the US Army Old Guard Fife, Drum and Bugle Corps plays Bb single valve bugles as well, so this King instrument is hardly the "first and only". As for re-capturing some of the sound of classic drum corps brass lines, arrangers will have to revisit the upper register when writing melodies for the soprano voice before any approximation of that might occur. It was the timbre more than the volume that provided the bite back in the day.

  48. But that is the point of this bugle. It's in Bb so it IS resellable.
