  5. I have to admit...As an alum of this corps tonight is one of those milestones that I've hoped for for decades and it is finally here tonight...Is it okay for a grown man to cry a little?...that is in relishing the feelings of being so proud for this edition of the Boston Crusaders and all those so many before them that put their blood sweat and tears into building the corps into what it is today... The Boston Crusaders have moved from survival to stability, from stability to success, from success to significance!

  8. Really? Since the move to Allentown 2 world championships, 2005 and 2011 Expansion of USB Formation of C2 DCA C2 Chamionship CWP open class WGI Percussion Champions 3 year agreement with Bernstein foundation and the NY Philharmonic so "weak" or the reality that the DCI world of today is different than five or ten years ago, the rise of Crown and now Bluecoats have changed the competitive climate. Historical legacy organizations Cadets, SCV, Regiment, Madison, Cavaliers have very much struggled to medal annually only the extremely well funded Blue Devils have done better in this climate than the Cadets Get Cadets a multi million dollar bingo operation and we may see a different outcome I would personally support Hopkins and the BOD "shopping" the cadets nationally for a another new hometown which would provide them a bingo license or other financial lifeline.

  10. Ok DCP... I told Liahona here that I would announce it promptly that he had predicted a month ago of that not only that Boston would top the Cadets, but that he literally predicted the date.. July 12th. Liahona... you nailed it !!

  14. The following is my personal take on it. In the show release they did on Opening Night there was a description like they do every year. Contrast was a BIG part of it, I'm guessing the bowlers/Fosse choreography/etc. were just something to give the show a specific style but the usage a ton of white in the corps proper juxtaposed with the black in the suspenders/bowler/stripe on the pants/prop/tarps were all done to give the show a high contrast black and white feel. The soloist in the ballad in all white standing on the black section of that tarp is pretty striking, the neon colors against all the black and white REALLY pop against the rest of the stuff, and there is a ton of left/right and back/front stuff going on in the staging. To me the "Jagged Line" prop is a divider and point where things enter and exit and come out the other side in a way that contrasts what they were when they went in (thinking about the taking off and putting on of hats as they go underneath and the guard flag changes in the front half of the show in Psychopomp). When they do that drill at the end of the show the white corps proper uniform against the black part of the prop is pretty incredible contrast. To me what I think they're trying to do with the ballad is juxtapose what you're seeing with something COMPLETELY different in terms of what you're hearing. There's a wall of sound RIGHT in front of the audience but the corps isn't there, they're way back in the corner facing back field. So short version is I think the show is a study in musical and visual contrast with the prop as a dividing line where a ton of that takes place. I think the ballad is a huge contrast to the rest of the show and really plays with what you're seeing versus what you're hearing. They went with a pretty minimal costume that would be a stark forefront to a lot of the darker backgrounds in the prop, tarps, and guard. The neon has high contrast against the black and the white so it doesn't blend in. Of course that could ALL be wrong but that's my interpretation and I really like what I'm seeing/hearing in that regard.

  19. No matter what happens tonite.. or in San Antonio.. or in Indy. ( and Craiga here knows this too, imo ).. the bottom line is that the Boston Crusaders are methodically going about the business of building a DCI future Champion at the Boston Crusaders. Can the Cadets ultimately prevent the Boston Crusaders from eventually topping them ?. Well, of course, nobody knows one way or the other. its only guess work, and speculation alone. So to that extent there can be no right or wrong answer to that question. But if the question is asked, its my opinion, totally biased as it may be, is that its is just now a question of " when ", no longer a question of " will they ?". Boston organizationally is now putting everything in place to make what I believe to be an inevitable outcome eventually become... well.... inevitable. Topping the Cadets sometime soon is part of the long term goal, but it is by no means the end all and the be all with the long range plans of the Boston Crusaders. Its part and parcel of providing the MM's at Boston superior instruction, quality experiences, meticulous planning that makes sense, entertaining shows, and upward placement mobility that ultimately has a DCI winning Championship as its ultimate placements goal down the road... not just the limiting, but quite interesting nonetheless, timeframe of " can Boston top the Cadets before San Antonio ? ".

  20. Very curious to see what happens with the 16 snare feature and the drumline feature during the Rhianna stuff. The "down the line split" at the end of the 16 snare feature is tricky to clean. The snare work in the Rhianna section is beyond difficult. Thought I heard some watering already in that part. Add in the visual aspects and it's nearly impossible to pull off. Two things about BDs drumline that hold true almost every year. Their book is always the most nuanced and most difficult, and the visual demands placed on the drumline are far more than any other drumline.

  21. A lot of folks are pinning a great deal of hope on the Cadets future closer. That new minute or so of music and drill must be something!

  22. Bob Fosse had so many legendary moves, so expect more dance moves. Bob Fosse's choreography is known for being deceptively complex. On the surface, it looks simple and minimalist, but it's actually incredibly difficult to master all his subtle nuances. What the MM's are doing is incredible. I tip my bowler hat to them.

  24. LOL look at 8:15, where the one guy in the center of the mass doing the bent-over shimmy during the Rhianna part stands straight up and stares at the audience. Hysterical!

  25. Even in this case our memories can be misleading - cadets added music and drill to the VERY END (since that's what we are discussing here) and obviously many large and small tweaks and additions to the entire show. 2012/13 the endings saw more added - say 30 seconds to a minute. 2014 the whole ending was redone to much dismay. 2015 the changed the unfiorm late season but added the "TEN" tag in mid July and then changed the "Z" pull again a week later. 2016 we won't talk about... This year the whole show was ready June 22 except for 1 minute. This was done intentionally because of a younger corps and they were already greatly struggling with "what they had" so the decision was made. I personally think it was the right decision given the membership. This wasn't a "oh god we ran out of time let's figure something out" - this was planned. Now the addition has been delayed 1 week. That decision was made when they "revised" the closer to be added. I believe it was "run and gun" but they made the decison to do a more regal ending - which is appropriate given how the corps is performing. That caused them to go back and change the drill in the prior section so they ended in the correct set for the new closer. That caused a 1 week delay. Not the end of the world. All that said - yes, better to have the whole show on the field and then just tweak and layer. That much is a given

  26. Just watched this again. There is so much to love. The nod to the origins with the "off the line." The fact the the historical horn quotes from yesteryear are played not sampled. The guard ensemble work with the rifles in the opener and the flags in the ballad. The screamers. The high brass feature when all the middle horns pick up trumpets to play. The drum solo (ignore the Rhianna audio and listen to what the drumline is doing). This show is incredible and the historical quotes bring tears to the eyes. To those who say they don't March....huh? Did you see that. Maybe it is time to bring back the 86/87 spats. Wow. Whoever has the "hype overload" gif, please post it now...I am DEFINITELY in hype overload mode. I can't wait to see what they do with this by finals.

  33. Excited to see the show tonight. I have to admit that the past few times I've seen them ('16 especially) its been a tad lackluster. I am curious to see the new uni's in person. I was not a fan of the tan/scout uniforms, I prefer the all white. (Although the all black weren't bad). I am hopeful to find some excitement to the show this time around. They are my all time fave (I'm also an alum) and am hopeful they can start trending upwards towards the top 5 again where they/we should belong year after year. Bring it PR!

  34. I saw them the day before at Rutgers. I was of the "oh my, that is the best designed and performed show I have ever seen since my first in 1963" camp. As were a lot of folks around me. Cadets were 2.3 behind in 2nd, and really, to me the spread between BD and everybody else was too close. They seemed to be doing a different activity, almost.

  35. I was watching some shows today when a moment from Cavaliers stood out to me, the audience gave a hearty applause for just drill. Drill needs to make a comeback, great drill equals great effect.

  38. You know why I like the Cadets this year? Because whilst they are trying to become a "21st Century corps" they are not following the trends of chopped up music, of a ballad as their 3rd tune. of not using pit/recorded music as the 'interlude" between each piece. Because they are not randomly resetting to the next spot during said interlude. I like that that they are "ploughing their own furrow" whilst trying to modernise. And finally, out of all the spandex costuming this year- they have done costuming the best. IMHO

  39. Hi Folks, I wanted to share with you my experience volunteering with the BAC for their first four shows in June out in the Midwest through the Muncie show. I wrote a daily blog that I have compiled into this diary-style essay and posted at the link below. It was a real privilege to get to know the professional staff and many of the members of the corps. As you may surmise after reading my entries, I am rather a newbie and somewhat of an interloper into this highly traditional BAC family that I have come to respect greatly but may not yet be fully indoctrinated in the lore. I hope everyone reads it with that understanding. The kids were very happy and upbeat when I left them in Muncie and their continued improved scores show how much they are enjoying performing Wicked Games. I can’t wait to see them again. I have 50-yd line seats for Clifton, NJ, Allentown, PA, Rome, NY and Massillon, OH. What a run that will be. Go BAC! http://www.starkmountainproductions.com/BAC/Intro.html

  40. I agree with that sentiment about Blue Devils visual program greatly this year. And I loved what they put out the last three seasons and greatly respects but didn't necessarily enjoy the visual programs of 2009 - 2013. I haven't said anything because I know I'll be lumped in with the Blue Devils haters even though I was a huge advocate the last three seasons, their ballad last year was some of the absolute best drill I have EVER seen. It was perfection. I am not necessarily speaking to difficulty/effectiveness but I do know if I had to pick 12 shows to watch from up high with no music in they wouldn't be one of them. I guess lets see where they take it, they're obviously not done layering but I'm not sure if a lot of the "drill" is gonna change on a large scale.

  41. I'm finding a ton to like drill wise this year. Santa Clara Vanguards whole show needs no explanation........the building block into that fake hit in the ballad is my favorite visual moment of the year. I really like Bluecoats drill this year, the FTL under the stage stuff is very cool, and the low brass sprinting down that ramp at the end is pretty dang fun to watch. Carolina Crown has some great Sacktig moments. Cavaliers whole visual program is INCREDIBLY fun to watch, especially from up high. The end of Little Green Men right before the ballad is insane, that's about as run and gun as I've seen in recent years. Boston Crusaders has incredible clarity, the part leading into the ballad is super fun to watch. Phantom Regiments visual program is actually pretty fantastic to watch, very traditional overall with some modern touches. Some incredibly beautiful sets and sequences. Blue Stars whole show. Mandarins Rorschach test drill throughout the show is really cool. Pacific Crest has some really cool moments. Genesis's drill is incredibly difficult and incredibly fun to watch. Legends show had some very exciting high velocity moments in the 2nd production and closer. I can say a lot more about drill this year than most years.
