  1. Great job C2 and the two members of the band I teach!

  2. Thank you. Judging by the fact that it went out and came back for all of us at the same time, I think it's safe to conclude that the issues was likely on Flo's end.

  5. Thought some might can relate and get a good laugh. You know you are a drum corps nerd when you are driving through a construction zone and suddenly you catch yourself looking for that Crown brass line because the torn up concrete formers look just like Crowns "deconstructed field lines" laying on the side of the road. Boy is it a long time until June!

  11. So, I have a confession to make... I should have marched this show. I was going to march this show until about 3 days before Membership Day. I decided to give up my last chance at marching to go forward with my teching career. This proved to be a poor decision, as I was suddenly let go from my position a few months later. It has crushed me that i lost that opportunity, and as a result I had anxiety issues any time I was to go see them this year. I bought tickets to the home show last week and didn't go. I felt awful, until I saw this show tonight. These guys are family, and I know they'll always be there for me even if I'm too weak to support them... 50 lbs overweight be ######. Financial instability be ######. If the corps I teach doesn't go out next year, I'm marching. For my family in blue, for myself, for closure.

  23. good for you and DrS and others in this conversation as Bucs Alumni. Proud moment for sure. Last year, I really thought C2 deserved it. It was a shocking, crazy moment. Tonight, Bucs cranked out an awesome show. And so did Cabs and CV in particular. If CV wins I would look at recaps and try to figure out how they did it. But, it could happen and I'll say be deserved. Just thought I'd go on record about that. A little extra competition at this point, very healthy. The shows and the complete corps tonight, all awesome. Proud to have been in and be staying close with the activity. (don't look at our national and world news until next day - this is a true getaway!) And Moto, yah go for it. (easier said than done)

  31. I agree. A ton of last years members moved into Cadets - so this season a slower start but a STRONG FINISH It's also the second year in a row where I prefer the C2 show to the Cadets show. Loved THE front back from 87 and then the "surprise" fast ending Kids really grew quick in the last month

  32. C2: got to give it - big full brass sound at the close. Really fine. All proud as drum corps fans? (glad the judges need to mark it) (oh yeah, so most of season I was in there #####in' at amplification, and the related malfunctions. Well now here I am with the home sound system, all amplification LOL. Full circle. No acoustic horns and drums here! Levels the field. No amp comments tonight!)

  37. Bushwhackers have an intensity to their opening as they play with the full range of dynamics. Some nice moments in the guard book as well. The field is accented with multicolored panels on the field and a scrim on the front sideline.

  38. Thanks for the tips. This seemed to be a Flo's end thing though as my screen did a black out blip, then the feed reset itself and it's fine now.

  45. I agree with you here, but let me first say that I personally liked the 2017 show very much. There was some cheese and it was perhaps a bit too literal, but it was a far cry from 2016. It was a solid Finals show that was very daring and risky -- and they made a lot of it work really well. Not being an insider I don't know what is true or not. I have no way of knowing whether Hopkins is a good or bad show designer. I also have no way of knowing how much he micromanages his staff. But clearly he was one of those guys that pushed long and hard for narration, singing, electronics, amps. He seems to like props and tarps and gimmicky ideas that perhaps he feels adds to a show. Usually they do not, especially if the show is not well designed. Case-in-point: on Finals night 2017 as the corps is playing that beautiful closing theme and pushing backfield, the drill and music are just gorgeous. The music keeps building and building, and then the brass faces front and the music builds even more. Ultimately they get to the company front and instead of allowing the music to climax with a big hit the corps stops and the celebrant narrates "The Mass has ended, go in peace." This narration just totally ruined the moment and took away from the awesome momentum the corps was building. To me, the point here is that you should NEVER interrupt excellent musical phrasing and thematic climaxes with cheese, narration, the presentation of a prop or tarp, and stuff like that. People can say Blue Devils interrupted their final chord of the show with the "Concord Blue Devils" announcement, but musically what they were playing had already made its impact. Visually they had already made their impact as well. The Cadets were trying to build to an impact, and once they got there they stopped the build and delayed it for a cheesy narrated line that should have been included earlier or not at all. To me, it seems that from 2013 onward -- despite some amazing music ensembles -- the Cadets have had a difficult time understanding how audiences react to narration, props, singing, and other gimmicks. Their timing of these events in a show seem to be way off. Whether that is Hopkins or the entire staff I would not know. But you see it in the product. The corps itself always seems very talented and capable, and instead of using that talent to its fullest they seem to rely on gimmicks, tricks, props, narration to enhance their ideas. Not the best method. Other corps have this problem, too; but because GH was one of the main proponents for these ideas in drum corps it will be his corps that takes the brunt of the beating for its' use of electronics, singing, narration, props, tarps, and other gimmicks. In general I have yet to see a corps use a tarp where I thought "oh, that was cool and they really needed it." I'd say about 85% of the narration we hear is not needed. I did enjoy the 8-piece vocal group in the Cadets show, but they were used a bit too much. Many of the vocals in others shows were also problematic. Electronics have become an issue. Too many mic'd solos. The quality of tone is changing too often, and not always for the best. Gimmicks and props work on occasion, but not often; and they cannot replace a well-crafted musical phrase that builds and climaxes uninterrupted.

  46. It's hard to make these comparisons, but... The Company scored 70 three weeks ago in DCI Prelims (not to mention 72 in O.C. Finals), so if Kidsgrove is neck-and-neck with The Company, then probably Kidsgrove now is scoring in the upper 70s on DCI's scale. Which likely means that Buccaneers are scoring in the mid 80s. So probably eight or nine DCA corps would make DCI Semifinals.
