Anybody taking a job in that organization will be in over their head, because they will not be enabled to make decisions, they will not be supported financially, all problems will be blamed on them, by GH. So you can say this guy took on a job he couldn't handle. I tend to think the reason he couldn't handle it was not the nature of the job, but rather the nature of the boss he reported to.9 points

not like the board will do anything. It's been going on like this for years. I mean Justin left for gods sakes4 points

Something the board should look at is how many people have had this job in the last 3, 5 and 10 years. I follow them pretty closely and couldn't even tell you the guys name who resigned.3 points
-
I do agree that it is a bit loaded and dramatic for a letter of resignation. That being said, I can see circumstances where one might feel is appropriate. One of those situations might be to ensure that the board of directors is getting accurate information and a picture of the true circumstances. One of the many accusations here is that the CEO blames other leadership for what are oftentimes his failures. And manipulates situations so he is looking like the hero. If the board is looking from the top down they are probably getting a picture from the CEO that could not be accurate.3 points

Well, it's collapsing under its own weight currently. If, in the event of a significant structural alignment, one would think there would be more than enough people with skills and expertise willing to step in to fill the gaps. Enough past Cadets wind up in prominent positions elsewhere.2 points
-
My guess is that they're afraid that if GH was moved out, the whole thing would collapse under its own weight, because no one else would be ready to take charge of the various pieces. Whoever the director of USBands is within the company is the person who should be being groomed as GH's successor, but if they can't keep anyone in the gig, that doesn't bode well for a successful transition. Oh well.2 points
-
Some has said its principally because the BOD there are essentially hand picked people by GH himself that then basically mostly rubber stamp whatever he wants. Others more closer to the Cadets would have to shed light on whether or not that perception from outsiders looking in is accurate or not however.2 points
-
The BOD has probably seen a dozen similarly-stated resignation letters over the last several years, and it doesn't seem to move the needle.2 points

If all you expected to get was a video made by a guy in the stands with a single camcorder, that would make sense, but DCI's modern videos represent hundreds of man-hours of expert work and they're not going to provide the end product for free.2 points

Corps and band have their roots in the military and classical music... not football. No matter what happens to football, pageantry and the marching arts will thrive and continue growing in one way or another.2 points

Seems to be the same old story, same old song and dance, and always includes the same person. I see a clear pattern of behavior, and yes I’ve seen the ranting and bullying while on tour.2 points

I don’t know...seems like a continuing theme to me from what I heard from former employees.2 points

Maybe because not everyone likes the new style. Maybe because the Cavaliers aren't above criticism. For what it's worth, I agree that this year's Cavaliers show was indeed a "visual vomit fest".2 points

maybe Justin and Systemblue will buy out USBands thus solving the million dollar deficit. Hey, we can always fantasize. Otherwise it will be AIM in Boston???1 point

Not twice because payout is dependent upon placement in the WC ranks and the number of years the corps has been in that placement bracket. But yes, they'd earn as members of WC, which is probably one of the reasons why they won't be admitted to WC**. **Disclaimer: I'd bet.1 point

As I have said many times, there are now quite a few World Class alums running bands in the Nashville area. There is plenty of home grown talent to give Music City a great base to grow from. And it’s a great city to send your kid off to if you are in Indy, Atlanta, Memphis or Mississippi1 point

This sort of behavior wouldn’t be tolerated in any public company. Why they tolerate and even support it in an organization supposedly focused on educating young people is truly baffling. Makes you wonder.1 point

Not blaming the victim, what I am saying is that if there's anyone in the activity that doesn't know the personality that they were dealing with they have to be living under a rock. Now with that said the shiny object of being with such a storied organization can also Cloud someone's judgement, one can certainly hope for the best but when there is history it usually follows suit. I will say on the other side of this the man has run a quality organization and is quite responsible from many of the successes the Drum Corps has had but what often happens what Rises a person to huge success often is the very thing that brings them down. I have seen this often also in quick successes.1 point

Yup. Wilt Chamberlain once scored 100 points in an NBA game too... as there was no " 3 second rule " in the lane at the time in the NBA, so he could " park and bark " there for as long as he wanted.. and did... lol. As for current judges maybe " scratching their heads at yesterdays, judges ", some of 'em probably "scratch their heads" at the scores given out by their colleague judges a mere few feet away today too sometimes.... A difference of opinion is not something found on occasion just on DCP....... haha!1 point
-
Heck, even back in the day... Kareem Abdul-Jabbar used to set up camp in the lane and was rarely, if ever, called for three seconds. He could have started a #### campfire and roasted marshmallows, and still no call. LOL.1 point

I don't think there's one person that ever took a job from this person without knowing what they were getting into now if they thought things were going to be different with them that's another story.1 point

Yes, someone should start a thread to discuss this impact!1 point

That's fine. Actions speak louder. I'm pretty much in the same boat sort of, but I just feel like there's no need for a major announcement. Stop being ridiculous. It has nothing to do with "angering" me. It has to do with the fact that people have to announce what they're doing to appease all the others who don't like Cadets anymore. If you're gonna do something, just do it. No one needs an announcement.1 point

Yes. But it works both ways too. There are former long time DCI judges, long time staffers/ show designers in Corps that are no longer involved in the activity that believe that too many of today's judges/ staffers/ show designers are " badly off the mark " now too. It happens sometimes in sports too. There are lots of former HOF basketball players, HOF Basketball Coaches that are on record stating they would never sit thru a current NBA Basketball game anymore. Its true in lots of other sports too.1 point

It's so funny how people are ALWAYS complaining about his posts, complaining about Cadets, yet you're FOLLOWING him as well as Cadets on Facebook and then coming here to complain about it. Don't like it? DON'T FOLLOW HIM and stop whining on this thread about Cadets. Life will go on with you. Now that THAT'S out of the way, I don't know what will happen with Cadets in the future but I'll always wish them luck. I may not be as big of a cheerleader as I was in the past, but I always have the best hopes for them.1 point

Not DCI, but Kidsgrove Scouts (DCUK / DCE) released the following press release today...1 point

And not just Tennessee, but also neighboring Kentucky, where there are a lot of great small bands with talented members that deserve a corps not far from home (especially since previous nearby corps like Star of Indiana and Capital Sound are long gone).1 point

I think we're talking decades here, not years. And I suspect the activity, if still around, would just move indoors at that point. Mike1 point

I'm sure everyone who works at YEA is super impressed to read poor George the martyr wax on about how unappreciated he is and how hard he works for just for the kids. Maybe if he could look beyond his ego and see there are others with actual good ideas more than eager to help, and showed a teeny bit of gratitude, things could be so different in a good way.1 point

I'd just like to add the thought that we've kind of returned to Div I, II and III anyway... SoundSport + Drumline Battle = Div III (educational/building mentality) Also, while I hate competitive inertia (BDB and SCVC on top all the time in Open; Buccaneers in DCA, etc.), changing an entire classification system just to alleviate a few corps' stranglehold on silver and gold seems a bit much. Someone else just needs to become better than them.... easier said than done, I know... *shrug*1 point

They just don't come any better than Dan Farrell. From the time he picked up the horn, he's always been at the top of his game and enjoyed the universal respect of his peers. He may change careers, but those things won't change. Bravo, Bravo, Bravissimo, my friend.1 point

Dan Farrell was present in some capacity ( Marcher, Brass Caption head, or Program Coordinator ) during many, if not most, of the top placing DCI years with the Phantom Regiment. Phantom Regiment has provided Drum Corps fans some of the most entertaining shows of ALL time. Iconic, unforgettable shows. Shows over the years that got thousands of fans up and out of their seats, cheering loudly in appreciative approval for the show. Shows that not only were huge fan favorites in the years that they were performed, but shows that won medals and/ or titles from the DCI judging community as well. Thus, by any measure, Dan Farrell's influence and overall body of work throughout the years with the Phantom Regiment was a huge monumental success. We wish him well in his new endeavors now.1 point

Am I reading arguing over something that happened 45 years ago? Nice. Oh, and Stu, if you got the last word 7 percent of the time, but the next highest poster is 1 percent, then Fran is still correct in his assessment. So you have some more analysis to do here. I'm thinking you should develop a spreadsheet of the top 20 "last word" posters to show you are not the worst offender.1 point
