  1. Your derisive attitude towards the Cadets2 program (and DCA corps in general) is where the thoughtless negativity is found. The three other organizations who run a second corps have all identified/developed/retained key staff by having them work with that second corps program. Cadets2 presents a similar opportunity for the YEA! organization. Nothing slanderous about that.

  2. xandandl - I believe the response from Fran Haring accurately describes the feelings of most DCP'ers and addresses your concerns (highlighted above) about the 2018 mm's.

  3. I agree this thread has gone off topic, but I would say a split thread is not the answer if it is going to be a spew more venom on George Hopkins. Critiques are one thing, especially where GH puts himself out there so much on social media, and in some cases the anger may be justified for those who love the Cadets and are concerned about what they see. When it comes to a board with more authority, business folks advising, and allowing the creative team to create, I agree, but some comments are pretty off base, and in a few cases I wonder if they know all that much about the director or corps. This is not unique to the Cadets threat or DCP, it is what happens when we can comment anonymously on the Internet.

  4. Mods, Could this be one of those threads that would be split, between talk about Cadets and the talk about bandos, GH hate, and other peripheries? Thank you.

  8. Yes.. I saw that thread, and its a good question. I've said this for a few years now.. I'm really not sure why DCI allows Pioneer to remain in the World Class Division. I have nothing against Pioneer,. As a matter of fact, I like their tenacity, and in some years, their shows too. But I see no practical benefit to subject this Corps marchers most years to non competitiveness in a Division of competition that seems beyond this Corps abilities to be competitive in. Most Corps have years or two where they struggle competitively among their peer Corps. But Pioneer has years of non competitiveness in the World Class Division now. Pioneer's " peer Corps ", lets face it, are not World Class division Corps. Open Class Corps are. Thats the appropriate division for Pioneer to be in, imo. Nobody asked me, but thats where DCI should put Pioneer now... whether they like it or not. And it'd even be better for their marchers, imo if DCI did so.

  12. Troopers appear to have made a change at the top of their design team: Adam Sage. News release is here. Also, a tantalizing bit of into at the top (emphasis mine): Last weekend our 2018 Design Team convened in Dallas, TX to begin preparations for our 60th anniversary summer program. This year’s production, which will include an exciting new look is sure to please fans from coast to coast as we set out west for the first time in eight years.

  14. The line I bolded... that seems to be a common theme for them for the last three seasons. Over-tinkering, perhaps over-thinking at times. The 2011 show... a clearly-communicated concept, executed at a high level... classic Cadets, and a well-deserved victory. The last few seasons, not as much... my opinion, of course.

  15. I agree with everything you said, except I'd change the year to 2013. He should forever be synonymous with helping to (leading the) shape the Regiment for better, and perhaps recently, for the not-so-great.

  16. So, I’d like to see the Cadets go back to their corps (sic) strength of run and gun with difficulty in the music book. I think they learned the wrong lesson from 2015. That show was in first at the start of the year and then they’d made some regrettable changes around San Antonio that they then removed and lost ground. I feel they dropped due to over designing and tinkering as opposed to just cleaning. Sure, the 10 theme was shallow and kind of stupid, it would have played better without it but I felt that show was still competitive. Just not sure they have the drill designer to pull it off today, or the other captions. I enjoyed last season’s show more live than watching the video after the season which means they did have GE built into it. But it was a bit sloppy in performance and a lot of the attempt at Nu-GE and visual pushed their strengths backfield or to the side again, it seems to be a balance issue. Emphasizing the wrong things at the expense of others to the point they lack sophistication and step on their own effect. I haven’t been wowed by their show themes for a long time, so less theme and more Cadet, more demand

  17. Happy Seventieth, Cavies -- long storied and competitive Corps/organization. Have a great '18-Season ahead and continue to make "Hook'emCavies" a very proud boostah.

  19. It could be a Boston history themed show. The colonists grew pumpkins and drank ale and today Boston's North End is known for pizza and specialty wine shops.

  20. Actually, open class is for a variety of situations. Some corps simply choose to serve younger or less experienced members, and therefore do not aspire to move to world class.

  23. The math starts with this reality: 150 marching members paying $3,000 in member fees equals $450,000. In today's world of million-dollar drum corp budgets, "...staying within their means..." might mean that much plus some modest fundraising efforts and corporate donations. Likely around $50,000 or $100,000 more, totalling $550m or $600m. Everything greater than that likely comes from some combination of "drives" (mechanical, programatic, etc) and non-correllated business income like bingo or NFL football drumlines. The organic nature of the activity and the kids who pay for it is around $550m or $600m. Why are we funding million-dollar shows? For what purpose? Open Class is a division that's based on proving mettle. Some may choose to stay in that class but I don't think that's what was intended, and the step to WC gets bigger and bigger every year.

  26. Boston probably wouldn't want to take on the Cadets current debt. It'd be a drag on them. So its a non starter. My.., have the times changed since that G7 thingy was floated out by GH as a proposal, huh ? Seems like a long time ago now.

"Kendall joined The Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps as the Drum Major Technician and served as a part of their leadership development program as well. Kendall is excited to return to The Boston Crusaders in 2018 with the additional responsibly of working with the design team as the Production Manager." https://greateastmusicfestivals.org/2017-fall-festivals/additional-staff/

  32. Well, G7 or no G7, lots of people have always marched in corps they knew had no chance of making the top seven, much less medaling. Mind you, I absolutely agree that over time, giving the same seven corps more and more benefits at the expense of other corps would be deleterious to the activity.

  33. no and i'll tell you why: they cant agree to disagree most of the time amongst themselves

  34. Yes, great for Boston!!!! Of course there will likely be some G7 hacks at some point who will attempt to claim that this was the G7 plan all along; to place out there such an outrageous proposal that it would put a fire under some corps.

  35. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS POST! And then they capped it off by hiring away the staff from the chief instigator of the effort to keep them out. Watching Hop suggest the G7 was an actual solution: Astounding. Watching BAC be blocked from the group: Disturbing Watching BAC's show stick a hot poker in the G7's eye: Entertaining, funny, and enjoyable Watching BAC hire away Cadets staff: PRICELESS

  36. Jeff, I have made this assertion before on another thread. Knowing many of the movers and shakers on the BAC board personally (I marched with some and taught with others) I can tell you that a turning point in Boston's trajectory came in the year when BAC DID, in fact, qualify to be in the TOC shows but was not let in. There were some people in Boston who were so angry, so furious at this obvious block that they literally committed to do WHATEVER it would take financially to thrust the organization into the upper tier. That anger was harnessed and became known as "Building A Champion". While some outsiders scoffed, the BOD was doubled in size, community based educational programs were acquired and grown, the formidable resources of the corporate/financial sector within the City of Boston as well as the city itself were brought into play, and the BAC/Inspire Arts budget was quintupled in 3 years. As I have said before, the G7 proposal ignited the fire. And, here's what is NOT common knowledge....more than a few of BAC's current board members who are now extremely successful in their 50's and 60's remember a time many years ago when there were some forces in the activity trying to keep Boston out (then it was the top 12). In those days, these people were just struggling teenagers off the streets of various eastern Mass cities and towns....what could they do? I guess now they feel like they are empowered to do something about it. The summer of 2017 was just the opening salvo.

  37. What a difference a year makes. Especillay this past year. The Boston thread hit 61 pages at this time one year ago. They were filled with second guessing, anger, vitriol, positivity, calls for patience, calls of poaching; on and on. Looking back; it was ridiculous and most of it proved wrong by the results of the corps advancement and success and the staff moves and the results for a couple of other corps too. The sky didn't fall there chicken little. Much quieter this year and with everything in place, it is on to next years program. Another good year coming I believe.

  38. ' Getting back to " Boston 2018 " ( this thread ) it will be interesting to ultimately learn what Boston decides to do re. uniforms/ shakos for 2018. The DCI trend seems to be to develop costuming that is theme specific. Boston had that in this years Unis/ shakos.... so it'll be interesting to learn down the road what the staff has in store for 2018 in this regard. Its still August, so'll it'll be quite awhile till those decisions are made,... of course
