Not DCI, but Kidsgrove Scouts are doing "24601 - A Les Miserables Story" in 2018. Design staff includes, John Meehan, Scott Johnson and Sean Gordon. Unfortunately we won't be coming to the STates this year, but this is gonna be an amazing show. We are fully expecting to march another full sized corps with a brass line expecting to top out over 50 members which is huge for Europe.2 points

Ah give the guy a break. He was so sure the Cadets were just going to pass Boston, Cavies and BC last season. He loves the Cadets no matter what and the VETS are returning (from war?) in 2018. He's kind of amusing.2 points

Sorry to read that GD is leaving, even if it's temporary. Maybe he will come back using a different "name".2 points

That top 6 bottom 6 draw type format format was also the way DCI '88 was split; and it stunk!!!1 point

Yup! For fans, it was frustrating not to have a sense of where their favorite corps ranked. The suspense didn't add to anyone's enjoyment. It also must have made the judges' jobs more difficult because the random order: 1) was a change from what was being done all season, and 2) required extra diligence (on an already tough night of decisions) to balance between "leaving room" and awarding a high number/ranking, when deserved.1 point

The person they had negotiated the contract with at LB's foundation is no longer there. From what I understand, they bought the Cadets out of their obligation for the next two years, including the arrangement with the NY Philharmonic.1 point

I'm not opposed if done well. I've said all along the ending in 09 was their undoing. too many melodies thrown together too fast with drill that was truly insane, and possibly unsafe. oh and no Z pull1 point

Oh, no doubt you are right that there is no driving desire within DCI for such a thing. Doesn't change my personal opinion. Why should it?1 point

Anyone care to set the "over/under" on when he comes back, this time? Last time I think it was less than a month.1 point

I just hope their designers are smart enough not to do West Side Story again.1 point

Gotta say it was very cold warming up in the lot, but our kids handled it well. On the field it seemed a good 10 degrees warmer, actually. Best part for us was the great tailgate party the parents threw for the band. One parent, a huge Giants fan and season ticket holder, has a trailer and all the stuff needed for tailgating. It was a great time after we performed. USBands did a great job preparing the bands for the cold IMO. Provided tents for individuals to get warm...an indoor warmup area for those who desired it. Sold handwarmers at the Cadets souvie booth.1 point

after watching most of BOA finals tonight, with the amount of bodies and the props craziness, 150 is more than enough1 point

Wow! Just finished watching Blue Springs, MO band. My first time to see them. Fantastic musically and visually - can't believe it was just high school kids, the level of musicality and excellence was so high.1 point

Been watching BOA off and on today. LOTS of super big bands. Of course I love the big sound but I do think the field looks kind of cluttered and the show designs seem simplified to deal with the masses. On another note, I have been 100% against tarps on the football field for DCI. I see them as hazard. Well, I have to humbly admit that I was ready to dislike O'Fallon's show with the full-field white tarp. But it turned out to be the most visually entertaining show I have seen all day. Kind of dirty in places because of no field lines, etc. but completely fascinating and delightful to watch.1 point

As someone who has taught Maine high school marching bands since the late 70's, I would offer this: The best antifreeze (by far) is SCOPE mouthwash. It doesn't harm the instrument ( not even woodwind pads), it won't harm the members, and it doesn't taste bad. We have had two Maine finals in the last 7 years with heavy snow at the show, and this works great. BTW, it is usually the saxophone section that freezes first. Of course, if you are at 30 degrees the mallet percussion/woodwind pitch situation gets interesting really fast. Also, frostbite can be a concern with drummers since they obviously aren't wearing gloves. :)1 point

We often hear the terms "clean" and "dirty" tossed about, and you'll have people argue to to whether it's just a throw away term. As I think of shows that are often called "dirty" and not just from this past season, cluttered may be more accurate. The props often get in the way. So if this happens with 150 members, would larger corps make the problem worse? I realize this would be a design issue and that's a risk they'd take with a larger corps, but I feel that150 works well. However, if there are prop movers on the field during the show, people sound mixing for electronics, etc., they should be considered marching members whether the number is 150, 200, or whatever it happens to be. This would mean sound mixers are not staff. Once the show starts, if you are overage, get in the stands where you belong.1 point

Actually I see the opposite. Keep the present max size, but include prop handlers, equipment handlers and electronics' handlers (i.e. board tech). Anybody who brings "stuff" onto the field, but who doesn't march should be included in the count. This would inhibit the use of electronics, unless the corps wished to have less marching members, thus lowering the visual appeal and possibilities. More is not always better.1 point

I marched in a huge college band - there is a point where the field gets just too crowded. Props certainly don't help either. So, I say , go back to 128 members - the idea was that this would only require 3 busses (less carbon emissions, better for the planet, cheaper for the Corps). This could also help increase membership of smaller Corps (Pioneer come so mind) Flame shields up1 point
