I just want to thank everyone participating in this thread. One of the most enlightening and informative threads I've seen on here in a while. Lots of good info and I think every question I've had about the issue has been addressed. This is what I come to DCP looking for. Kudos.2 points

What could possibly be in a policy designed to keep sexual predators from having easy access to Corps members that DCI would not want to be public?1 point

1970, 2017, 1999, 2003, and from 2000... no better than this (guard and brass)! Go get .em in 2018! Boston Crusaders 2000 FlashBackFriday070612-20031 point

I'm recalling reading that it was original compositions which for my musical knowledge or lack there of, is all new and would be unrecognizable to me.1 point

Cavies did OK with unrecognizable music in the early 2000's with the judges and fans.1 point

Obviously I'm coming from the camp of "corps should write their own music", but for the sake of discussion, can someone explain t me the benefit of playing someone else's music? The majority of corps don't even play an entire piece, and every corps that does license music still arranges it for drum corps. Is recognizable music just more accessible to audiences and judges, or is there something more I'm missing?1 point

I liked the more random prelim order, it was fun. Maybe try it for San Antonio, make it a 2-day event, prelims and finals. Put some of the higher-ranking corps on early at Prelims to get people in the seats. it could add some drama as it’s often the first big meet up of the season…could also see the corps benefit by not having to travel for a day. Could also see the attendance going up on both days as it’d be more trip worthy. Didn’t they do the corps in seeded chunks for finals there anyway?1 point

I love the idea, and I'm sure that great score writing talent would develop around the activity. Cadets and Suncoast have made it work in the past. There are so many great pieces of music that many people first heard in drump corps. It was the "gateway" into classical music, jazz, and even opera. It would be a shame to no longer have great pieces translated into drum corps. Wouldn't it be nice if the copyright stuff were not so complicated? Nostalgia...1 point

They definitely did in the case of "Empire State of Mind"--otherwise they wouldn't have known the rights were in jeopardy all summer long, when they kept not showing the video of that portion of Madison's show.1 point

This is the common criticism of this idea, and it's not wrong. But consider this: no corps plays music verbatim anyways, and even after someone (super talented) has arranged it, staff (other than arrangers/composers) make tweaks literally all season. We're at the point now where you don't even need an actual musical score by all days - just a framework that can be adjusted throughout the season. You'd eventually just get decent composers and great tweakers (wrong word?) evolving within the drum corps activity, just like we have great visual techs and designers that have evolved over time. Also with the rise of electronic music composers who can literally put together a 20 minute musical program in a few hours, combined with the rise in transcription software, writing an all original musical framework doesn't feel difficult at all anymore.1 point

We just need to get rid of this bot, it's broken and worthless. Also I'll come on to the site and just leave because I don't want to search 12 pages deep for the thread I care about.1 point

I don't agree with that at all. I'm an arranger. They made it *much* easier for me to figure out what music I can write for my band, how much it will cost in rights, and how easy it is to get. They cut down my workload substantially, and the whole system is automated. Tresona has saved me, and the bands I write for, a lot of time and money. Tresona doesn't make the law...but they do give us an avenue to follow it correctly. The fact that Tresona makes a buck off me and my band isn't something that bothers me in the slightest. There's a ton a value in the service they provide. They've also made it easy for me to sell my work to other customers, and for that I thank them. You don't hate Tresona...you hate existing copyright law. And so do I.1 point

Literally one of the very few fantastic uses of a vocalist ever in the marching arts... How dare they...1 point

The only thing I would change is having a drum majors retreat on Friday night and announce the scores at the end of the show. And possibly start Semifinals about an hour or two earlier. Friday night tends to run on way too long.1 point

This news ( Feagin hire )was already posted a few days ago on the DCP " 2018 Staff Announcements " thread here on DCP.. That said, perhaps fans/ alums of Boston missed it being posted on there , so I'm pleased to see it posted here again on this 2018 Boston thread. These are both very talented, and outstanding additional 2018 staff hire additions for Boston this off season.1 point
