Well...I'm definitely a Cavaliers "homer"...no doubt. But with new brass staff infusion from Carolina Crown, Blue Stars, etc. my son felt like he had to "prove it all over again" and kindly asked me to fund a trip to Dallas rather than doing a video audition so he could "look them in the eye". Evidently they liked what they saw. Contracts weren't very abundant, as would be expected at a season opening audition. So...never a doubt in MY mind...but HE's the one that has to do the playing and marching. :-)2 points

No, they would not score well. Nor, IMO, would they generate the type of reaction from current non-legacy fans you might think.2 points

A NJ high school band did a "progression of marching music through the years" show this recently-concluded season. They started on the old "starting line" complete with a replica honor guard... then progressed forward with the use of visual designs of various decades, ending with the modern era. However, they didn't use "old school retro" music charts for each segment... instead using up-to-date charts that evoked the various eras. I think that helped make it work much better than if they had used off-the-shelf retro stuff. As an added touch... they used several recorded intros, from various drum corps folks, to set up each segment. Thom Hannum, Jim Mallen, Jim Russo, a young lady who is a recent alum of the band... and yours truly. I was the "on the starting line" opening-announcement voice. It was quite an honor for me to be a part of this!!! It worked well for them, with the fans and on the scoresheets, judging by the reaction they got at the show I saw them, and by their placement at the NYS band championships.1 point

To double on this one, I know my old music library in college (separate from the main library) had every Finals DVD. Not sure if that's all colleges, and I haven't actually been to mine in a decade, so things could have changed.1 point

I was at the audition camp, probably saw or even talked to him a little bit. They sounded great at camp.1 point

Yes. Someone posted a video of Spirit playing "Let It Be Me" from 1979 in another thread. I watched it and couldn't wait for it to end - and not for the final hit. No offense Spirit. I loved it back in the day. Now it's nostalgia. It's great in its own context. It doesn't have to be great in comparison. That's why reviving the old programs is a bad idea. HH1 point

if there is one thing I am sure about my friend Kevin LeBouef is that he is fair, pro-student, and tremendously compassionate. He'd like your son's spunk. Kev's also a bit surprised by the "aura" and "rep" his public relations agents have sown before his arrival. A great chuckle.1 point

was there a doubt? Your sincerity and loyalty almost equaled Hook 'Em's last season.1 point

It works both ways... of course. Many of the so called " legacy fans " don't get much excitement with todays shows either, as I'm sure most here already know as well. But the OP did not ask us about any of that, ie entertainment levels. The OP asked us about " scoring well " or not " scoring well ". I think we can all agree here that once we take Corps and their shows out from one judging system to another, none of the Corps, nor their shows ( no matter the decade ) would " score well " once we change the judging system that they originally operated and performed under.1 point

"Free Again"...with solo by Buglers Hall of Fame member, Eddie Haywood and later, Spirit of Newark director, Glenn Eng. The modulation to the major was one of the most uplifting moments in the entire history of Drum Corps. Dick Burns had incredible musical intuition. All of us apprentice arrangers studied his charts note for note.1 point

If BD 2017 designed a show to win using, say, 1976 rules, that show would look a lot like the 1976 Blue Devils1 point

Except that they didn't jump from seventh to first in a single show. To claim they did is fantasy. Tell me, in the last show before finals week where they placed 0.4 behind SCV, where between these two did the other five corps fit? They didn't. SCV finish the season in second. That tells me Scouts "jumped" from second to first, not much of a conspiracy.1 point

As a 5 year member of Pioneer I can say that my completely biased answer is 1996 and nothing else is remotely close. The 1996 corps was finalist caliber in all performance captions but struggled on the GE side. Go look at some recaps from mid season of 1996 and you will be shocked to see where Pioneer's hornline was scoring. Z1 point

SVC 1999: Samuel Barber's Symphony No. 1, movement 3. The music is transfixing, the performance commanding, and the staging masterful, especially the counter-intuitive work of the guard. The interpretation is mature and austere, with none of the maudlin or literal qualities that too often afflict ballads. I am surprised no one has mentioned this piece. I am spellbound every time I watch it, and always have a tear in my eye by the end.1 point

I guess Ill take that "disaster" of a show over the one that won any day. I feel like Crown is becoming a BD like ensemble. Their time of over hyped fanboys/girls have moved on to another corps and they continue to come out solid and doing great things. Im looking forward to see where they go from last year.1 point

I just wish the activity could come up with a word to describe segments of shows that are quieter than the others without misusing the word "ballad."1 point
