  2. On the other hand, Key Poulan original works will not have to be edited off the DVDs and Blu-Rays.

  3. This thread confuses me now too as I could have sworn that Xandandl and dans did not want this thread topic to be about anything else but the Cadets 2018 and got very,.. VERY.. annoyed less than a week ago when other Corps or non Cadets 2018 discussions were brought into a discussion on this thread. Was I perhaps dreaming ?

  4. They were very clear that one of their main goals this year is to make the top 10 in 2018 I have never seen so much talent in the Mandarins. With absolutely no disrespect to alums, the performance I heard from this past weekend's bass camp was stronger than the performance put out by some of the previous Mandarins brass lines during finals week. They have members coming from all over - Texas, Arizona, Washington, Utah... People are EXCITED to be marching Mandarins. They will be very interesting to keep an eye on during the off-season. I wish them nothing but the best! Edit - I also very much agree with the previous comment about having accessible music. It was part of the success of 2017 and I am very much hoping that they follow the same path in 2018.

  5. Yes they were, but I'm getting tired of them winning the annual DCI Winter Classic.

  6. Ditto here, except I have been going to Allentown for over 40 years, both as competitor and spectator. Parking isn't too much of a pain - usually park on the high side of the cemetery, early though. Allentown is my "finals", since the finals went indoors. I refuse to attend indoor drum corps spectacles, even more so now with amplification. My last finals was Pasadena. Allentown is usually the final stop on our almost annual 20 days DC tour, which usually starts in Little Rock, skipping San Antonio (indoors), of course,. Too many memories and emotions to pass up Allentown.

  7. A couple thoughts after being incredibly eager to see what the Mandarins would follow up last year’s break out show with. First & foremost, this is an incredibly fresh idea. This is not a theme that any nationally-known outdoor marching unit, DCI or BOA, has explored: what happens to the sacrificial virgin in Rite of Spring after she dances herself to death. I feel like I know my independent indoor groups, both guard & percussion, pretty well, and no one rings a bell as having used this in a gym before either. So....kudos to the design team for something so simple to understand & yet so unique. I feel like there is a lot to explore here while still leaving plenty of room for the trademark energy that the corps sufficiently branded themselves with last year. Most importantly, the initial announcement screams for conceptual depth....something we’re not used to seeing from this corps. Combining last year’s intensity with seems to be a more challenging concept/deeperdesign and all my chips are in. My only point of hesitation: as mentioned above, the source music was not discussed, other than the statement that Rite of Spring will not be used. I do hope we see the group utilizing more actual source music. It is my opinion that using original (or mostly original) Key Poulan scores will keep a glass ceiling over the corps. Sound of Silence was the musical high point of the show in 2017; the original brass book was mostly unmemorable in comparison. With corps in their tier last year using Husa, Bartok, Gordon Goodwin, Grieg, Wagner, Danny Elfman, Joni Mitchell....eh, Key Poulan just didn’t stack up, and basing their wind book off of more published music last year could really have pushed the group over that final hurdle. BUT, I digress. This sounds like a huge creative leap for the Mandarins in the form of a startlingly-untouched idea that could make for another memorable show. Throughout the last decade, it seems nearly impossible for up&coming corps to capture show magic in a bottle two years in a row, and this team sounds like they’ve assembled the right ideas to pull it off. I also loved that the designer avoided the usual fluff of just here for an educational experience and flat out said they intend to field a top 10 corps this year. Ballsy, and I would be flat out thrilled to see them achieve that!

  8. How do the Mandarins not have their own 2018 thread yet? Their best show ever and less than a point away from Finals last year, retaining many of their acclaimed staff members, bringing in Tim Snyder to be the new Brass Caption Head... This corps are going places. I cannot wait to hear the sweet sounds of summer from the Sacramento corps live.

  11. presently, the Mummers are still disputing New Year's Day trophies I hear. Besides, no one said Hopkins would announce the 2018 costuming. In other news, Chris Collinsworth has now been officially dropped by YEA as the announcer to the June 30th and August first contests.

  12. We're just starting to get things ready for the 2018 season. The tour map (and DrumScorps) will be updated before the season to include this information.

  13. Thank you kindly Sir! As you say "Drum Corps - Its in your blood!" I still do Drum Corps - Les Diplomates, but not as nostalgia, but on modern instruments with modern arrangements, keeping in mind the "spirit" of drum corps. I love to see this in the eyes of the young people performing in today's drum corps, although I could do without the artificial sounds produced nowadays. BTW, I prefer acoustic guitar to amplified acoustic guitar and especially to electric guitar. Same goes for amplified horns. Ironic, since Les Dips has both amplified saxophone and electric guitar!

  14. As per Mr. Hopkins' Facebook page: Cadets will be discussing their 2018 show this Wednesday night (Feb. 7) on Facebook (both Cadets' page and Mr. Hopkins' page). Notices of exact time to follow. "I'm not going to call it a "show announcement", but there'll be a lot of announcements ... we'll be talking about the Cadets' show this year; we'll be talking about the makeup of the corps ... letting you know some of the pieces of music we're playing and how it kind of all ties together ..."

  15. I can still hear the distinctive echo of the North Tenors, Channel One Suite, Bonnie Ott's solo, Legend of a One Eyed Sailor, the Gate Maneuver in the closer... then staying to watch the encore performance from the 50 yard line upper deck with their snare tech Steve Chorazy only to miss my corps bus and run at a sprint for several blocks through downtown Philadelphia to catch up with it. Thank God for red lights. That was 1976, Franklin Field, Blue Devils, the first of many DCI Championships.

  16. Ray was a stalwart drum corps guy, the very definition of dependable. My deep condolences to his family and his countless drum corps friends.

  19. I love 94 BD but here's the thing, in my opinion it's where the chop and bop arranging started (lots of perc breaks where in the past the brass musical lines flowed more)

  21. 1981 Madison Scouts. We were undefeated until we saw 27th Lancers about 5 weeks into the season. We shocked everyone, including ourselves when we won DCI Midwest finals in Whitewater, WI. Warhawk stadium went absolutely berserk when Blue Devils were announced in 2nd place. Every top drum corps was in this show, which will always be my single most favorite contest that I marched. This is the Madison show that is on the DCI Championship CD's because DCI finals in Montreal was not televised. We beat the eventual champion SCV in either our last or 2nd to last show before DCI Finals, I believe by more than 1 point. We went into Montreal championship week with a good shot to win it all. but fell short finishing in 3rd place. Fun fact... I can still play the entire Snare Drum book. I'll never forget it.
