  1. Could we be so lucky as to hear some ABBA on the field this summer?

  2. I think they’re just going for a general Lost/Bermuda triangle theme, but not a specific event. Kind of like how Wicked Games was loosely based off of the Salem trials but was it’s own thing

  5. A couple of our DCA rivals called us "Kids and Girls" back then. LOL. We took that as a badge of honor, and got lots of laughs out of it, too. We did just fine. It was nice to celebrate those DCA titles with my fellow kids and girls.

  7. I don't think the issues they've had competitively are simply because they aren't using music the way they used to.

  9. Why only 1? If you're going to be all male, then be all male. If you want to be coed, be coed. You can't be "all male, but if a really good female comes along, give her a spot instead"... that is not an organizational value. This screams "gimmick" to me, unless it is the first step to increasing female membership. Maybe Madison needs a gimmick to figure out their show design woes? idk.

  12. Okay, but no one has asked the truly important question... Will they start selling Girl Scout Cookies at their shows? I mean, their fundraising would go through the roof.

  16. The voices are what make me think the show is going to be a more original story that combines many of the elements we're speculating.

  20. I can say that if you listen carefully and critically to the late 70's iterations of Vanguard's brass section, they're rhythmically very clean, but the timbre was very top heavy, tinny, and whiny as compared to BD and Phantom's deeper and broader overall sound. When we played "Guess the corps" on the bus and someone would play a very short excerpt, they were very identifiable. A good example of that whole SCV sound was that "Black Orchid" concert number they did, I believe in 1976. Madison's, Bayonne's and arguably Two-Seven's brass sections were in many aspects better in that era. Listening to their product now, I think they definitely should be in the conversation with BD, Crown, and Blue Coats as to who "has it". I think right now they're the best they've ever been brasswise. I don't see there being a lack of anything there right now in the present. They just have to keep doing what they're doing, establishing the excellence they have for the future, and keep getting great performers.

  22. My son is in his 3rd year with SCVC’s trumpet section this year and has a camp on his birthday next month. For reference, he is 17 and began marching DC at age 12. He resides in So Cal, and I instructed him his first year. He auditioned for “just” SCVC (they wear color coded bracelets) at the huge joint A & Cadet Corps camp in Los Angeles in December 2017 but impressed the staff enough that he was asked to attend the January A-Corps call back camp. My understanding is he was one of five Cadet Corps asked to do so. He traveled to Indy in January and auditioned for BStars. That was during the Weather Hell taking place, and he didn’t get to their camp until after midnight Friday Indy time. He had been traveling since 6AM and hadn’t gone to school that day. He called me from the Indy airport late Sunday night (I live in Hawaii) to report he had missed a brass spot by 1-2 spots. He had never marched Stars’ style before as his HS marching band also marches Cavaguard style since his band director is a Cavies alum from their 3-peat years. All things considered, he thought he did pretty well. To any BS alums reading this, he loved the experience. I spoke to him last week and learned none of the SCVC folks made it. He was blown away at the talent. To the original poster, I marched that SCV ‘84 brass line against Sam/84 BD Sop (I did the ‘07 gig, Sam; we shot pool at the bar together) and got to hold the Ott Trophy in my hands; it was the best moment of my DC career. The second best moment was seeing Bonnie Ott-Thompson’s face in 2011 when i told her in person at a restaurant in Huntington Beach, CA what an honor it was to hold “her brother’s trophy”. She gasped, and her eyes welled up with tears. It was then I really understood. Edit. Vince Noble left Madison after ‘84 and followed his sister to SCV ‘85 where he aged out marching next to me. He’s on the DVD closeup with me during the push in Tenderland. Man I miss his sense of humor. Vince, RIP. .

  25. Don’t worry. We’ll be clean and we’ll be strong. The horn line is even better than last year. We have a higher average of music majors this year as well and the energy at camps is amazing! It’ll be a different group this year for sure and we’ll be learning how to really perform to the audience. Having all of are music is also something we didn’t have last year. We got our music for the closer when we were learning the closer during spring training so the preparation for this upcoming season is nothing close to where we were last year and we’re moving in a week earlier this year. We’re gonna bring Crossmen back to where they used to be. It’ll be an exciting summer!

  26. The shows were watchable, enjoyable, exciting, and performed with verve, intensity, and sincerity. Of course they deserve to be well thought of and still very respected.

  29. "Bicentenial Memories": The most outstanding (For us) is the comeback of the Madison Scouts. They had suffered a poor "First season" and went into rehearsals to change a huge chunk of their show. The changes and their fighting spirit carried them to a second place finish at Philly. I have always thought that if they had another day or two, they might have come a lot closer to the Blue Devils. Garfiled Cadets exit from Finals was a shock, as was the very low placement of the Muchachos in prelims. Hawthorne (While not the powerhouse corps of 1975) had defeated both Garfield and the Bridgemen a few times and had placed over the Blue Stars and Guardsmen in contests right before the DCI Championships. "Looking Back Ten Years, Absent Friends": A look back to the season of 1966 and some of the competitors of that season who were no longer with us: Blessed Sacrament, St Kevins Emerald Knights, St Lucys Cadets, St Raphaels Buccaneers, Bridgeport PAL Cadets, Blue Rock, St RoccosCadets, NY Kingsmen, St Josephs of Batavia, Conn Royal Lancers, Pittsfield Cavaliers, Chicago Royal Airs, and my first "M & M" corps St Anns. 32. Two guys in Kilties all-age quit because they let me in the brassline. I wouldn’t have blamed them if they’d quit because of the female they let in after me that season. I spoke to the corps before they voted and said that they should do what they want. It wasn’t the end of the world if they didn’t let me in. It would have been dumb to not let me in however because I was a much better brass player than most of them. Just sayin.
