  1. If this is the show title, I'm good with it.

  2. Like Seinfeld, I like shows about nothing. Shut up and play.

  4. On the field, from Allentown Pennsylvania, The Cadets! Drum majors (names here) is your corps ready? Drum Corps International is proud to present The Cadets! Really that's all that's needed.

  5. I want more cheesy narration. Extra credit if it tries for some deep meaningful message. I also want more thunderous goo. Loves me some electronic generated sound so loud it drowns out the entire brass line. That's drum corps!! And can you please get me more props. Like tarps covering the entire field, or various jungle gym-like structures taking up lots of space. And for something new, because "evolving" = good, how about reaching into the BOA ranks and bringing some go karts to the field.

  8. Sleeper pick: little Jeffrey (Goeffrey?), with the Red Queen in the mix. Maybe Sarah as a dark horse. Good grief, the cringey characters he's placed on the field.

  9. This! For most of us, when you see a show live you do not really see faces or emotions or closeups from the stands. Maybe if you are really low, but at most shows we experience drum corps from a distance. We see big picture. We see form, motion, color, and we hear audio. Props can sometimes be difficult to interpret. Facial expressions and interpretive dance and/or body movement can be difficult to react to unless done in a big way. We experience the total show when we see it live, so it makes sense that we want that from the video as well. Not as easy to do, and I get that they want to show close-ups to offer a different perspective, but the big picture is always better. This goes for the sound, too. I don't want to hear too much pit or audio close-ups of various sections. I don't want to hear poorly done amplification and tinty-sounding solos that overtake the brass and percussion. I want to hear the total acoustic blend that should be the product of great brass and drums. If electronics are your thing, please do it carefully and musically.

  12. Way to go Terri! You're on your way to become one of the DCP police. Only problem is that as a rookie, you'll be assigned the overnight shift. Sorry Jim.

  15. The only thing I really didn't like about The Ring was that they decided to go with a starkly minimal visual package. No color, no "big-ness" to it. If anything has ever called for over the top, expansive moves, color and emotion, it's Wagner, you know? The brass were spectacular, though! Mike

  16. Done sparingly, it can work. Cavies 2016, during the brief singing moment was a good example of both no headgear, and singing, done well.

  18. The Cavaliers have a closed Facebook page for donors, and Chris Lugo has been pretty good about posting video of camps. Nothing especially top secret is revealed, but it is anyway a terrific (and, I presume, not too difficult) way to give donors attention. Not surprised if other corps do this, too. I only know of this for the Cavaliers.

  19. Had dinner last week at Tavern on South, a flag toss from Lukas Oil and where (I think) the Cavaliers have a big alumni + fans gathering on Saturday afternoon before finals. A moment of mild excitement about the upcoming tour.

  20. You're phrasing was fine. It's just that those who have attended a portion of various corps ensemble's on Sunday, will give very little info about show themes and such. Their replies would make a veteran politician jealous.

  22. It was great. We enjoyed everything about the day. Everything. No Percussion, No Guard present this weekend. Just Boston's brass staff working the 2018 Boston Brass Line.

  32. Good article. Yes, it's important for the artists in this activity to find ways to fund their passion. Post season withdrawal is a drag. I would readily shell out cold hard cash for more access to what is going on with each organization, in the off season. Anything. It doesn't have to be show reveals or copyrighted stuff. Show me some brass lines doing tuning sequences... batteries and front ensembles warming up. Throw in a few flag tosses from the guard. Anything to see/hear how the performers are. Many of us miss being MMs. Bring back some good memories for me. I'll pay.

  33. Of course, DCP members don't necessarily know which ideas come from Mr. Hopkins or from someone else, so what this really means is that "If we like things, we'll say that he stayed out of it, and if we don't like things, we'll blame him for it."

  34. The Cadets are in a good place right now. They have the framework of a really good show. In my opinion, if Hopkins stays out of the design process, this will be a strong show. If not, this will be a mess of a concept and show...time will tell.

  35. A Cavies championship!! Woooo!

  36. Agreed. It’s one of the biggest thrills of the activity. How many times, in a lifetime, is the average person on the receiving end of thousands of people cheering? It’s a thrill for the audience too. Surely it can be arranged to allow each corps 20 seconds to take in a lifetime memory.

  37. I've always had a fondness for the songs of the Classic IV. "Traces of Love" is my favorite, but I think something could be done with some others, too, like this one: Though I can't recall: was David Dennison the keyboardist or the second guitarist?

  39. A return to big drill moves. It's taken me several years to realize that Visual is now more about rifles than cross throughs. Totally missing Phantom's block merges, Cadets' intricate reshapes, Cavies' geometric wizardry, and SCV's war-like maneuvers accompanying their thunderous brass.

  40. The sousaphone background apparently has no relevance. For those who don't have 18 minutes for the Mandarins video, here's a quick summary: "Life Rite After" is described as "a play on what we believe happens after the sacrificial virgin dances herself to death in The Rite of Spring ... we are not doing The Rite of Spring; we are continuing and opening up the possibilities of whatever we want to happen on the field ... our intro ... is definitely intended to take you back to when she dances herself to death ... our first production [has a] change of mood immediately ... utilizing the color guard to tell the story ... our competitive goal is to be in the top ten this year ... to get the audience to understand and to play a part in what we are producing is such a great feeling ... you will see influences and tastes of The Rite of Spring [but no actual music from that ballet] ... really like to push boundaries ... pushed the envelope last year and the audience saw that ... want that to continue ... [corps has] a new look ... something that is absolutely captivating and is going to be talked about." (At one point, the host says "everybody knows Rite of Spring", but I'm not sure that's true even among drum corps fans, BD '13 and a few other shows notwithstanding.)
