  7. I am continually amazed by how some of the people think who post here. For starters, in my experience most people who are not celebrities or highly visible public figures (and being on the board of a little charity in Allentown qualifies as neither) will either attempt to answer a brief, sincerely worded email, or if the volume of questions is high and the content similar, will attempt to post a public response that addresses the common thread. What people will generally not answer is a nasty or accusatory email, or a novel. They will generally not answer emails that make demands either. I have been involved in some fairly high publicity issues at the local level, and I have also noticed that when people ask a question and get an answer they are generally appreciative. When people state an opinion and the other person does not agree with them, they regard it as either unresponsive or a brush-off. I think both situations I have described reflect the dialog not only around this issue, but around The Cadets in general for the last couple of years, both in this forum and in similar venues. Not sure if other corps have the same level of discourse, but it's pretty disappointing because it could not be further from what the members on the field represent.

  8. I like that they're not just using trombones, they're using bass trombones from the sound of those tbones

  9. It adds an edginess that I like. A raw sound. I like how it cuts the sterility.

  10. With all due respect to the young lady singing last year, I just wanna hear that magnificent brass section.

  11. I like that low brass sound. At first I wasn’t too sure about adding trombones into the DCI mix but I think I’m liking it as an additional piece of color. What I’ve heard since, including this Crown clip, has been pretty tasty. I guess I’m a convert.

  13. You gripe about people who have an agenda against YEA and direct your displeasure to someone who is asking what appears to be a legitimate question. Or is it everyone not connected with YEA should just shut up? Yeah I'm thinking the worst which is typical when someone gets an insult without explaination. And honestly this vibe I'm getting about don't question the board just brings up too many Penn State memories. IMO it is NOT showing hate or an agenda to want to know what is going on. Especially if you care about the group or people involved.

  14. Yep and tone of voice and choice of words go a long way too. Had to make some hard choices while on council of a declining church. Got to learn who really wanted to find out what was really going on and who "knew" the answer without any information and just wanted to argue you down to their point of view. Guess who got the full discussion and who didn't.

  15. So asking a question is part of an agenda? Ever stop to think someone here knew the answer... oh wait someone did. The pure irony is part of the reason the Cadets are in this fix is apparently no one asked gh questions about how he managed the corps.

  20. They say in the business world that the first rule in rebuilding trust with your employees, stockholders, clients, and customers after some sort of public scandal or calamity is openness and transparency. It's clear that the new braintrust at YEA thinks that matters such as these really ARE "that important in the grand scheme of things." So they're not, in fact, putting someone else's agenda (if that's what this is) ahead of their own, their keeping their word to be more open and transparent with what's going on to the people who clearly care about the corps and want to see it come back from this. Any way one looks at this little episode, the outcome is very good and gives further credence that this board (and chairman) are really doing the right things to get the organization back on track.

  21. I understand your point and agree. At the same time it would be helpful if people were not forcing THIER agenda on the organization with issues that are really not that important in the grand scheme of things. Of course he will respond. It would be helpful if people would put the organization's interest ahead of their own agendas for the time being while they get everything stabilized. Anyone has a right to ask questions and send emails... but is this really helpful right now. Probably not (again... one persons opinion).

  22. So what is worse thinking that you deserve a response from a very busy total stranger.... or thinking you deserve to be the decider in who gets snotty responses. Which add nothing to the conversation

  23. It was, IMHO, a snark worthy response. Demanding to know every bit of minute detail is a waste of precious time. Just like all the self proclaimed experts coming out of the woodwork to tell YEA what they need to do. My favorite is one from someone who wanted the Cadets to fly them out from where he lived so he could speak to the corps about sexual abuse and also tell them about their important history... what for it... without ever being involved with the corps (no a member, staff, admin). All the crazies are coming out of the wood work. My point to rpbobcat was this is not the most important thing they have to address right now. Happy Mr. Rutherford responded (cause that is the type of guy he is). But is this really at the top of the list of things he needs to be dealing right now? Probably not. Just suggesting folks cut them some slack to focus on the important issues at hand and to George Dixon's point let their actions speak for themselves.

  24. Not my body ... I’m retired. As far as how the board was selected who cares? It is kind of like sausage ... I don’t need to know the gory details of how it was made ... I just want a delicious kielbasa. I am ecstatic with the changes already in place at YEA! I will be cheering Cadets at every show I see them this year ... almost as much as Bloo!

  25. You’re missing the point. Why was it necessary to post this here? If it’s a personal concern then you don’t, if it’s an agenda then you do. That’s all. There are a lot of busy bodies these days

  26. Amazing what you can accomplish by simply asking somebody who promised openness and transparency to be more open and transparent about what's been going on. I'm glad he didn't take the flippant and frankly dismissive tone that MusicManNJ greeted your request with, or "rolled his eyes" like George Dixon did. Then again, based on everything I've gleaned from Mr. Rutherford on past experiences with him and from other sources, it didn't surprise me at all that he was more than happy to answer your questions. That's the kind of guy he is. Well done to you and to Mr. Rutherford!

  27. It doesn't really matter to me any more whether I know a corps' show theme or music. When I did know beforehand, it didn't help me enjoy the show any more than if I didn't know. Sometimes, I got excited when I heard clips of what a corps was playing and then saw it in the show and didn't enjoy it as much or visa versa. A good example of both scenarios is the 2016 Cadets show with the Mackey piece. I was all stoked about it when I heard them play it in one of the camps. Then, when I saw it in the actual show on the field, I wasn't impressed. The opposite would be last year's Carolina Crown. Some of the music was unfamiliar but when I saw it on the field, I was blown away. So now, a show title or list of music doesn't matter to me. It won't sway the way I will feel about a show until I see it live.

  28. Wow, so well put especially the part about all the angry aggressive shows lose effect when so many people are doing it. Like to me and maybe I'm in the minority 2016 SCV was far better than 2017 in terms of show design musically. Anyway, back to crown looking forward to it aa always because crown usually has shows I enjoy I just wish we'd see something more like 2007 2008 2011 even 2016. Was not hoping for a dark direction but it seems to be a comfort zone for this activity

  29. This was explained in my original post above It is what Mr. Rutherford has been sharing with sponsors, DCI and others the organization is accountable to. Certainly a very valuable use of his precious time right now trying to save the organization... answering your questions.

  32. Without revealing the show music, I can tell you it’s extremely powerful, aggressive and at certain moments very beautiful. There will be some new sounds that you haven’t heard from Crown in the past including different approaches to electronics in certain sections. The sound will be BIG, and as you can see in the video they released they’re adding bass trombones into the mix this season. The evolution for Crown continues this season and I expect this show will probably be more we’ll received than last years.

  33. Hmmm sounds intense! Since I’m playing in a pit orchestra for Beauty and the Beast right now, I’m gonna wish for some music from the Disney classic! (Yeah, I know it’s a long shot but one can hope! XD) In all reality, with reports from Boston and SCV and other corps seemingly heading down a very aggressive show design path, I hope a corps is able to put something genuinely beautiful on the field. That was something that was, in my opinion, very lacking from last season, with the exception of maybe the Cadet’s closer. But I miss the vibes that Phantom 2010 or SCV 2016 put on the field. Aggressive, angry shows work but when nearly everyone is always intense, it begins to lose its effect.

  34. They've been so quiet this offseason, it leads me to believe that they are going to come out swinging and firing on all cylinders. I think SCV likes being under the radar, and with the success of last season, Gaines doing the drill and this design team, the sky's the limit. I'd expect a really different and interesting show this season. Vanguard got their name for a reason, after all.. Corps wise, with the defending championship percussion and guard units, along with brass that should be ready to compete at the top, I think they have a real shot to push for the Championship in 2018. I too am excited to see the announcement and check out the music!!

  35. My opinion is that for lack of a better description, the traditionalists have given way to the pragmatists. The uniform was read by the alumni as an honest attempt to go all in to improve placing.

  36. Let's face it, the process was NOT an ordinary one... the prior entire board resigned so the situation is unique Almost as if a brand new organization drafts an original board for the first time When a new organization is formed a board is "recruited" by folks interested in forming the new organization - that's probably how this process worked also I believe this board is considered "transitional" - meaning they will serve for a time and then a more normal nomination/voting process will be put in place I believe "they" used various resources (including DCI and others) to help recruit/select this current board The board membership seems to be well-selected and doing a good job so far Watching the town hall video (Doug Rutherford) is really a breath of fresh air and professionalism So grounded, realistic and well-presented Bodes well for the future

  38. I think the most spectacular example of keeping a show theme under wraps and absolutely wowing fans on opening night in Indy was the 2016 Bluecoats. I had no idea what they were going to do and it was about the most fun I’ve ever had watching a show. I said to Jim nobody is beating that. I think BD did a couple of times but they won on the last night.
