  1. Hats off tonite to the Cadets. Missing 16 marchers, holes everywhere, thats a daunting task. But they never pulled out of the show. They pushed thru it all. No quit in them tonite, and those that were healthy in their Corps, or at least somewhat healthy, went out there and competed and performed for the audience, no matter what. Some of us notice these things. And we tip the hat to the 110% effort the Cadet Corps gave out there tonite under such trying circumstances. Some " wins " arn't found in the scores. Tonite... with the Cadets... is an example of such.

  4. On a positive note...... So glad this one didn’t get rained out, and what a great stadium. My aunt and uncle got to see drum corps for the first time ever, live or on video, was awesome. SCV did incredible from the end zone and we had a great run. I’m sure everyone else did as well, I love so may of the shows this year and regardless of scores, what an awesome year for the activity. Less than two weeks left people. Enjoy it and don’t let something like numbers dictate your enjoyment. Goodnight.

  5. These scores are crap. No way BD is that close to SCV and they should be behind Bloo. I have no idea why Cavies haven't broken 90 and the spread between phantom and cadets is way to close.

  6. Bluecoats - going on after SCV and BD was certainly going to be a challenge, but they rose to the occasion and blew us away. Definitely not a dull moment in this show. Vocalist wasn't as loud as I was expecting. Couldn't hear her in certain parts, and when I could, it was kinda muddled. I know she's great from video, but when she was live and singing while the brass was playing, she was easily covered. I know some people here would say that's a good thing, but I do wish I could've heard and understood her more. Ballad was my favorite part of the show. Simply spectacular. Closer was surprisingly better live than it was on video. Their guard is the best they've ever had. Had a lot of great moments. I love this show more than the past 3 they've done. Keep up the great work! Blue Devils - this show has done a 180 for me. I "liked it" on video, but live has pulled me over the edge. I loved it. The story telling is perfect. Better than any other storyline show that they have ever done to me. May be my favorite BD show since 2014. That ballad made me feel like a natural woman in all the right ways! Where I was, the screamer wasn't as prominent or overpowering, so it was perfect to me. Props had an issue with windows popping out, but the overall look of having a full bar on the field was masterful. Guard was so clean. Still love the Male and female alternating work. 2nd drumline of the day to captivate me. Not a fan of their brass balance being top heavy, but I understand that it is their style. Just not my preference. Gotta give BD major props for putting on a phenomenal show. SCV - favorite show of the season easily. I love everything about it, and I mean literally everything. Not one detail is questionable to me. I used to hate the unfinished prop look, but I get it now. They just gotta clean. Their drill from up high really stands out. I understand how some could say it's more staging than drill, but I disagree and the pictures they make are really beautiful. The brass is possibly the best brass they've ever had. I feel that part of the drop in music analysis and GE is from the lack of euph solo at the beginning of the ballad from mic issues. That killed momentum just a little. Glad it finally came back on for the duet and screaming part. My fear is if the mics mess up that bad in LOS. They had more mic issues overall than any other group throughout the show, so the fact they still got the numbers they did is impressive. The ending when they push the two platforms together made me teary eyed and I don't know why. It was just such a powerful moment. The ending was not only my favorite part of the show, but was my favorite part of the entire day of performances. Nothing matches the intensity of that moment to me. Definitely got the biggest crowd reaction of the upper deck by far. Also that horns up in the ballad was audible to us in the 300 level. That was a moment that video can't do justice for.

  15. Phantom is the corps that got me into DCI. They had an elegance mixed with swagger that no other corps had. I really hope they are able to find that again soon

  17. Enjoyed the show. First trip to NightBeat. SCV rocked.Just started laughing at that first brass hit. One a whole other level. It is theirs to lose imo. BD and Bloo are closer than scores would indicate. Thought Bloo had an off night energy-wise. BD’s soloists are amazing in person. Crown’s really polished musically. Visually the drill doesn’t do much. But they’re cleaner musically than just about anyone, save SCV, and really max out their show. That brass chord at the end of the ballad...wow. BAC had the best “show” start to finish. The wave effect is freaking awesome. Fun to watch. Loud. And their drill is very effective; great feet throughout. Favorite show of the night. Cavies started strong out of the gate but they are in trouble. Seem to be a lot of balance issues in the second movement. And the ending just drags. Kills literally all momentum. It’s not working. This is a good corps performing a show badly in need of a rewrite. Two weeks to do it. Overall, awesome night, huge crowd, perfect weather, and great venue.

  18. Boston just keeps " layering " ( lol ) & improving performance execution. 1.2 points from Crown, and just 1.3 points from Bluecoats. Congrats Boston also for breaking 90 tonite. Congrats to both BD and SCV.. They now appear to be the ones to compete for the title this season. That was an outstanding performance all around for SCV tonite, imo

  19. The NightBeat audience is actually applauding! Nice to hear. In the past, it's seemed that only Crown could do anything right for them.

  22. Boston Crusaders.... thanks for all you do.... and will do. That was a terrific performance tonite, highly entertaining to boot. The show is coming together nicely as we enter August now, and into the final stretch. You all look and sound like you're having a blast this summer !

  24. If this summer has taught me anything is that if you let scores get you this bent out of shape you’re in it for the wrong reasons. They’re just having a blast and putting the best show possible out there. Whatever else happens is out of their control. If they don’t care about the scores, I sure as hell shouldn’t. They had an awesome run tonight, felt great, and onto the next one.

  25. Honestly, this post is awesome to see right now. Why bother getting all bent out of shape when it comes to the scoring, which you have no control of anyways, and just enjoy the show.

  26. Nice job, Boston! Now 5 points ahead of Cadets, put up a spread on the Cavies, and continuing to gain on Crown and Bloo. But we do need someone to tell us again....WHICH if these results are "aberrations" again?

  31. Boston Crusaders - loved this show on video, loved it even more live. I didn't think in the beginning of the season that this show could pass last year in terms of entertainment, but they proved me wrong. Their technicality across the board was incredible. Guard, brass, percussion, it's all there. Unfortunate the amazing grace vocals didn't work, but the show was still incredible. The new ending works so much better than the old one did. The disappearing had the audience (including myself) shocked. Their drill was my favorite of all the shows. So much fun to watch them move. A friend of mine pointed at the neon trees and said they looked like those car dealership inflatable tube people and I couldn't stop laughing. Now those trees will forever be ruined for me. I love this show. Crown - brass, brass, and more brass. I could listen to their brass for eternity. Such a powerful and full sound. Show is definitely better live, so that's a positive. That being said, the music just doesn't scream beast to me. Like others have said, it seems like they chose the music first and threw a theme on top that. Even though it feels like that, their playing of those musical selections is just stellar. I love their musicality. The drill seemed so much cleaner than it has been. The guard was also great, and though I'm not a guard person, I thought they should be higher than they have been getting. Closer was my favorite part of the show. They groove when they get to it. They all know how to perform. They have such a high energy show, it just doesn't feel as complete thematically as those above them. Still loved their performance.

  32. Quick thoughts from seeing it all live: Wow! Out of the top 20 corps, I am looking forward to seeing around 18-19 of them again. I've NEVER said that. EVER! The selfish part of me wants there to be 15 corps performing on Saturday night so I'm hoping for a 4 way tie for 12th on semis... Mandarins, welcome to Saturday night! Adding you to my list of corps I'm eager to see next year. Cadets, don't let this years placement affect what you guys do in the years to come. Great show! Cavs, I wasn't surprised with the placement tonight but won't be surprised if it's only for tonight. Boston, hated the change to the soft ending...until seeing the changes done to it tonight. Great show! Crown, great run with a great crowd reaction. Love the changes to the ending! #crowndrums Bluecoats, I love the end of the opener and the ballad. Not a fan of the rest of the show but my god you are good! Blue Devils, Wow! This is honestly a dangerous show. I've locked SCV into getting the Gold for weeks now but tonight was the first time I thought they COULD be caught. Not saying it'll happen but I honestly won't be surprised now after seeing BD tonight. SCV, just a cool show. You don't know the story or theme? It doesn't matter one bit. It's pure entertainment. And wow are they clean. And Rennick strikes again... This was a GREAT venue. See everyone in Indy...

  42. Great show again tonight. My wife spent most of it pointing out a specific trumpet player she feels a motherly attachment to. He was in 7th Regiment and she spent several hours with him at the ER with a foot injury I think. He was the great flugel soloist in 7Rs show last year.

  47. This is what happens when you have all these autonomous fiefdoms without any guidelines or policies. Until now. Pioneer has been a Corps since 1974. And the director, who was the director then, runs it exactly like he did back then. I’m from that era. Nobody wants that anymore.

  48. Keep in mind that Houston was a TOC event with the new sheets. These are the new criteria: 1. Visual GE: How similar are the corps props to those used by the Blue Devils? 2. Music GE: How similar are the corps arrangements to those played by the Blue Devils? 3. Visual Performance: How similar is the corps marching style to the Blue Devils? 4. Music Performance: How much does the corps sound like the Blue Devils? 5. Guard: Do the guard costumes look like something the Blue Devils would wear?
