  3. Impulse expands their percussion staff. After being with Impulse for the 2015 season, Manny Castaneda returns to Impulse for the 2017 season. Manny is an active music educator and performer in Southern California and the southwestern United States. His performance background includes many disciplines of music from symphony orchestra to drum & bugle corps. Manny’s drum corps experience has included marching snare with the Troopers and with the Bluecoats in the front ensemble. He has also been a member of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, the El Paso Wind Symphony, and Star City Percussion Ensemble. He is currently a freelance musician in the Los Angeles area playing everything from orchestra and musicals to rock, metal, funk, and hip hop. As an educator, Manny is on staff as front ensemble tech at Elan Indoor Percussion competing in SCPA and WGI circuits. He is also the head of percussion at Workman High School, Gabrielino High School and is part of the percussion staff at Baldwin Park High School. In addition, he has been involved with several other highly successful high school and college programs in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and west Texas areas. He is an active clinician and lecturer in the southwestern United States covering drum set, marching, orchestral percussion, and other music business aspects. Impulse welcomes Manny’s vast and varied experience, and looks forward to all he will contribute to our program.
  4. Auditions continue this weekend January 21st and 22nd. Registration is at 9:30 each day.
  5. Impulse Drum & Bugle Corps has appointed Rob Carson as percussion caption head. Rob comes to Impulse with a lifetime of experience in the drum corps activity and drumming. He started with Santa Clara Vanguard as a performer from 1971-1978 then continued on their staff until 1980. He is recognized as one of today’s finest rudimental performers. His snare drum talents have won him more than 30 competition awards, including three World Snare Drum Championships. He is a highly regarded educator, performer and clinician, and through his disciplined and aesthetic approach to music he has perfected many new and enlightening rudimental techniques. Carson is also the co-inventor of Remo’s Power Stroke and Falam Drum Head and designer of the DC10 ProMark Drumstick. At PIT, Rob teaches Playing Technique. Currently he is a full-time faculty member at Musicians Institute / College of Contemporary Music in Hollywood CA. Mike Shaw has been appointed to head up the front ensemble. Mike started playing drums at the age of six, and has played on many stages throughout the United States and Canada. He is very excited to work alongside his longtime friend and mentor Rob Carson. Mike got his start in drum corps in the winter of 1974 with the So. San Francisco Conquistadors Drum & Bugle Corps. He marched in the drum line from 1974-1977, and competed in snare individual competitions throughout the North West. In 1977 he auditioned for The Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps and marched in the snare line from 1977-1981, winning three championships. In 1982, he moved to Southern California to march and teach with the Velvet Knights Drum & Bugle Corps. He is currently working on a new album with the band he helped form in San Mateo Ca. in 1983, and is also teaching privately from his music studio at his home here in So Cal. Impulse looks forward to what these two will do for our percussion program as we begin our 2017 season. This summer, Impulse will once again be performing on a national tour. Workshops and auditions are currently underway. For more information on auditions, please visit Impulse Drum & Bugle Corps

  7. Thanks everybody for the well wishes. Tonight, all the judges said it was a better show than last time they saw us, but our score didnt go up much. But it was a good run and the kids had fun. Consolation performance at World Prelims Thursday morning at 9:51. Hey, they get to perform in the big stadium. Once more for this great show.

  9. We are looking for 1 trumpet and 2 baritone players, and 3 guard to fill out our lines. This would fill the show as currently designed, but if we get more, we will open the drill to accommodate more players as long as we maintain the balance needed for a great show. If you are interested in becoming part of our show, "Music is _____.", email impulse.mngmnt@gmail.com If you are a percussionist, we will be holding a percussion clinic on July 6th from non to 8pm. You will drum alongside the Impulse! drumline. The clinic is open to all sections, including front ensemble, and all skill levels. There will be many door prizes and everyone will receive a free general admission ticket to the SoCal Classic, Open Class Championships on July 17th. For more information CLICK HERE

  11. If you are from SoCal, or anywhere, Impulse is looking to fill weapon and flag spots for their tour this summer. We have a full California performance schedule, and are doing a national tour ending up at championships in Indiana. Our next rehearsal is this Sunday from 10am-6pm at Marina H.S. in Huntington Beach. Come out and meet the staff and current guard. You won't be disappointed. Please visit www.impulseyoutharts.org or email impulsecolorguard@gmail.com for more info.
  12. DCI hasn't updated the master schedule page yet, but they have listed us on the individual pages for all of our tour shows. Here is where we will be this summer........
  13. I am having issues posting pictures, but not in the manner the original poster was. However, I thought I would just tag onto this thread since it is a similar topic. When I click on the add image tool, I get the pop-up box, right click - paste the web address, but then nothing happens when I click the button to insert it into the post. It just locks up and all I can do is refresh the screen. Help?
  14. In case you missed the announcement, Impulse Drum & Bugle corps is making a national tour this summer. "We were confident DCI would approve out return to the national stage" said corps director Mike Lopez. "All of the preparation and rehearsal to this point has been geared toward a full tour and we're looking forward to competing in Michigan City at the open class championships." This weekend is the first full weekend camp, and the corps is working hard, just as they have been through the early season. Impulse is still accepting membership in the hornline and guard. If you are looking for a place to march this summer, come out to rehearsal. This weekend, 5/21 &22, Impulse is at Marina High School In Huntington Beach. Next weekend, Memorial Day weekend camp will be held in California's Central Valley. If you are from the Fresno/Bakersfield area, or anywhere for that matter, this would be a great time to join the corps. For more information, please visit www.ImpulseYouthArts.org or email impulse.mngmnt@gmail.com See you on the field!
  15. That is a nice stadium at Romona. The year they were installing the artificial turf at RCC, they moved the show to King high out off Van Buren and Wood. It was exciting to actually be in a real stadium for a DCi show in Riverside. Since they redid the field at RCC the pressbox has been on the side two 35 yard line. I have heard a couple stories as to why they never finished rebuilding the entire stadium. Regardless, it is a horrible stadium. I can't believe DCi continues to allow them to host a show there.
  16. Can someone please explain to me why DCP is so anti Renegades?
  17. I hope that this is a successful campaign. I also hope to work it out so I can be wearing one of these new-original style uniforms this summer!
  18. So with SoundSport being open to all ages, I wonder if Star United is going to jump in on it for another competitive outlet for their program. Or if they will stop doing Mini Corps at DCA I&E all together.
  19. Haha!!It is going to be a battle because they are going to agree to revert to the Top 12 being the BOD with the caveat that everything gets rebooted to the original DCi. Local sponsored groups; more local shows; oh, and only single valve G bugles will be allowed. hahaha The horror!
  20. In all the questioning, dissing, discussion, and explanations in this thread, I think this is the worst part to read. As we see corps folding, going inactive, and barely surviving on life support, to lose a corps for political reasons is sad. I think the bridge needs to be mended and both DCA and the Renegades should meet once again in the middle. I hope this can happen. Good luck to the Renegades this year. I am looking forward going to open house on the 26th with a car load of other Southern California people! Should be a great weekend.
  21. Just a passing thought as I have been catching up on this thread...... I wonder if the shows were designed only to entertain the fans and performances were not judged or scored, would they 1) cost less to produce; 2)be more entertaining to the layman at a show; 3) grow a larger fan base of people that do not care who wins or places 11th; and 4) would people still be interested in marching? Like I said, just a passing thought......
  22. Yeah that is usually what happens when you downshift from 4th to 1st getting off the freeway.
