  1. Actually, SCV’s m&m in prelims was terrible, the result of a late arrival (practically sprinted up the hill) and some changes that included sets relying on yard lines (which Pete had been incorrectly told would be there). The finals scores reflected a host of changes to take out persistent ticks (changing a front of 8 to two fronts of 4, etc). I remember one of the judges who always ticked at the end of a push just walking away with his clipboard.
  2. Might also include the rainout (74 or 75) (think it was the US Open in Ohio). Did the show in garbage bags...those that were still there were out of their minds.
  3. Yeah, I was there...didn't have anything to do with another corps.
  4. While I'm sure in general you're right... Wasn't any "1" pro tape in 74. It would have been 2". And the 2" tape isn't a "fire hazard" (although they probably used that as an excuse; it's not like film) it just takes up a lot of room and was no longer used. But I'd give a lot to see the 74 finals show. We (SCV) really stunk it up in the prelim performance and that is what was saved for posterity.
  5. Yes, it's definitely the DeKalb show. I was in the audience (Marched SCV the next year). Great stadium for drum corps. Still remember watching the bottle dance practice at a field right outside the stadium.
  6. 1970 VFW- My first major show. First big time corps I saw was the Cavies in prelims (from about four feet away, sitting on the sideline of some crummy field). When they placed 11th (I never heard about the penalty) I couldn't believe there were any better corps, much less 10. And THE PLANES. Which seemed to go over finals every 15 minutes or so completely drowning out the corps.
  7. DCI 72 Anaheim Kingsmen I was in about the 10th row and Concert got three Standing O's. Could barely sleep for weeks thinking about it.
  8. Gotta say... I don't remember that we were really worried about anyone except Madison. Basically the attitude was that if we didn't lose horns by more than we won drums, we were OK. Really interesting looking at the swing in M & M scores from prelims.
  9. I've still got my ticket (unripped) to prelims.
  10. I was at the first DCI in 1972 and most of them since. This years Cadets show was the most technically demanding program I've ever seen. And the execution was incredible. I watched a horn rehearsal earlier this week and looking (and listening) up close was a revelation. I had them out front by a good margin.
  11. Gotta tell ya...I was at Cadets rehearsal yesterday (and Crown)... And Cadets book is the single most demanding show I've ever heard (and I go back to DCI I).
  12. Argonne...Fanfare for the New. Was it 72 or 73? Anyway. Wow they could play. And I swear I saw Sandra Opie marking time in high heels and a dress when rehearsing them in 73.
  13. I've got some Marauders pics at home...I'll try to scan 'em in this weekend. Has anyone got a higher rez (larger size) posed shot of the Iron Brigade from the US Open? The only one I've ever seen is too small to print and I'd love a copy (I was DM).
  14. The 74 stuff was done by a PBS station (I think it was WHA)...It's just that they did prelims because Whitewaters stadium lighting was too weak for TV.
