Here's something to think about. WGI just put out a news release with this statement in it: "The number of color guards registered at this year’s world championships is now at 352, an all-time record for the event." Also last year the championship sold out and is expected to again this year. Apparently WGI is doing something people like.

Here it is right out of the manual for 2010:
All color guards will be seeded using their most recent regional score increased by 1.5 points for each of
the first four weeks of the regional calendar and 1.0 point per week until the end of the competitive
calendar. The resulting “ranking list” will be used to assign color guards to their preliminary appearance.
Color guards with identical scores will be sorted alphabetically. This ranking method was designed to be an
objective way to determining preliminary appearance. A single panel of judges will judge all preliminaries.
Since jazz running is a basic dance technique, talk to a dance studio about teaching him how to do it or since it is such a commonly used technique in winterguard talk to the guard staff of your son's band.
It was wonderful for our Northstar parents, families and friends who couldn't go to Dayton. They figured out how to project it onto a wall with a power point projector and then had a guard party to watch Finals. They all loved it.
