  1. BD - please! You are much better than that (visual programming). Pick-up-stix, scatter drill, pick-up stix, scatter drill, follow-the-leader, stand still, scatter drill, rinse and repeat. Musically sounded like "Through A Glass Darkly" (2010). Tons of talent in their corps, just wished the product given them to perform was better.
  2. REALLY like the "cursive" parts of SCV's drill, like the opening set. Best overall product they've had on the field since Scheherazade, in my humble opinion. Members should be stoked with to perform this show!
  3. In general, Phantom Regiment - from 70's to the present. 1989 "New World", 1993 (with Fire of Eternal Glory), and 2006-2008 (Faust, Firebird, Spartacus) stand out to me. Around 1999-2001 SCV had a great bari-euph sound - very beefy. Would have loved 2004's Scheherezade" even more if there were euphs in that production. 2006 BD's "Godfather" had a noticeable bari-euph increase in sound compared to previous BD lines (because of a shift in #'s on low brass instrumentation that year). When BD switched horn manufacturers in 2010 their bari-euph presence picked it up several notches. Crown since 2008 has a wonderful low brass presence. Madison has had several monster lines over the years, including 1986 (especially the 2 middle numbers from Harlem Suite), 1992 (the second iteration of City of Angels), 1995 (Drum Corps Fan's Dream Part Uno, but the entire horn line was unreal that year), and 1999 (Jesus Christ Superstar).
  4. In reverse order of the year performed: Phantom 2010 - "Into the Light". Great setting of both mood and movement of the show, starting in the lower left tunnel (representing birth) and ending in the upper right tunnel (entering heaven). Life in general happened in between these two events with the corps' journey - both from left to right (womb to tomb) and various moments both frontfield & backfield (high and low points experienced in life). At least that's how I viewed it. Phantom 2008 - "Spartacus". Staged the conflict between the drum majors, and between a few of the DM's and the peasants/freedom-lovers (corps proper and color guard). The DM being pushed out on his podium was brilliant. My favorite overall show ever. 1989 Cadets - "Les Miserables". Previous posts about this have described this well. 1982 Blue Devils. "WHAT?" you say! Well, I was able to hear "F Tuning" backfield many times that year, and it was truly a preshow to me! Goosebump city from that monster corps!
