  1. Blue Devils also used fiberglass under their uniforms in 79 as well. The first time I saw a snare harness was with the Argonauts from Salem Oregon in 1976 when they carried double snares.
  2. 1) Has been in business 54 years. 2) Has won 14 DCI Championship Titles (the most in drum corps history). 3) Has never placed out of the top 5 at finals since 1975 (the only corps to do this). 4) Operates six successful organizations under the BD umbrella. What more do you need to know. You'll be getting into one of the most successful drum corps in the history of the activity. My experience was this: You'll be treated as a professional and as a result you'll be expected to act as a professional. You'll be afforded plenty of rest and food because a well fed and rested drum corps will always perform better than a hungry, tired corps any day of the week. You'll be surrounded by talented players who will all be at least as good and probably better than you. You'll trust and listen to the staff and in the end you'll achieve a level of performance that very few ever experience.
  3. I do. I may not listen to CD's on a daily basis but I still use them as master source files for my MP3 player. On your iPhone or in your car MP3's sound fine but in an acoustically tuned room on a nice system no way. Imagine a world where Finals are archived only in lo bit rate MP3 and Youtube quality video. I'll take CD's and Blu-ray any day.
  4. Synergy will be performing for the 4th consecutive year at Angel Stadium of Anaheim in support of the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Orange County Chapter This years event will take place on Saturday September 17 If you are 22 years old or younger, love to drum and are free during August & September then come drum with Synergy. This event qualifies for your Community Service Hours Requirement too! See our Website for details: http://synergydrumcorps.com/
  5. Try http://www.kyrmusic.com. in Chino Hills, Stephanie Vasilakis (2011 BD Snare) is listed as a teacher there.
  6. I agree with this one. It's incredibly frustrating to hear perfectly great music obscured by wind noise. I mix audio for a living rather than record so I can't give you a good mic recommendation but I can tell you that there is no plug-in in the world that will remove wind noise 100%. Don't go cheap either. Professional windscreens can run about $100.00 however you can get a decent one for about $40.00. They're worth every penny when you sit down to listen to your recordings for the first time and hear nothing but the music. Without a windscreen the best mic in the world will simply record the best wind sound in the world and nobody wants that.
  7. Very few things in life are "necessary" yet many things are desired. I desire the occasional stick trick regardless of whether or not it is meaningful to the performance. On that we will have to agree to disagree. I also don't need an aural interpretation of a *Doctoral Dissertation on "An Analytical Study of Bass Drum Sounds" when I listen to a drum solo. It doesn't really need to accomplish anything for that matter either, after all it's just a drum solo. Just lay down a good groove with some clean notes and an occasional stick flash and I'll be happy. It's drumming, not rocket science. * DDM index no. 1588, University of Northern Colorado, 1982
  8. Two time SoCal Independent Open ADLA Champion Synergy will have its open house on Saturday, November 27th at SKB cases in Orange. If a quality drumming experience is what you're looking for then please join us for our 2011 season. It's going to be another great year. http://synergydrumcorps.com/
  9. Sorry my mistake, this is a youth band. I don't know which one though. I have another picture of the Whittier Cavaliers Youth Band that I didn't include. I don't know how far back the youth band tradition goes. I know there was a band at the opening of finals in 1980.
  10. Blue Devils 1974 Anaheim Kingsmen 1974 Squires 1974 (VK Feeder Corps) VK 1974 Vaqueros (?) 1974
  11. There are two types of compression. One refers to the data rate/size and the other refers to the dynamic range of the program material. Yes, all commercial DVD's use compressed audio in the form of either Dolby Digital or DTS in order to physically fit on the disc. However dynamic compression is used during the mix and is unrelated to data compression. The Blue Ray discs that Tom mixed (correct me if I'm wrong) uses data rate compression but no (or very little) dynamic compression.
  12. Thank you Tom for doing the right thing (at least in my book) .
  13. Well my tongue was planted in my cheek though not firmly. All I know is that I'll be at the National Association of Broadcasters trade show in April researching various 3D digital presentation solutions for my producer clients. A majority of edit houses here in Hollywood and Burbank have 3D editing capabilities and screening facilities. It's a huge bandwagon that everyone seems to be jumping on and almost to a person they all think this will be different than the gimicky 50's "Bawana Devil" type of movies made during the so called "Golden Era" of 3D from 1952-55. Will it stick around this time...it's hard to say. Not every presentation is suitable for 3D. But from where I sit 3D certainly seems to have some legs this time. The fact that Avatar made 1 Billion dollars in 17 days certainly got the major studios attention. Whether or not that was due to 3D is subject to debate however the fact remains that the highest grossing picture of all time is a 3D film. As they say...Money talks and right now 3D is screaming at the top of it's lungs.
  14. Tom, You're lucky I waited six hours!....I was originally going to start bugging you in two!!!....
