  1. Aren't there more rain outs these days due to the rules changes than weather changes?
  2. Of course it is just marching band now. I thought everyone already knew that.
  3. I have been away from the activity for a little bit, and cannot recall when/if DCI commonly has discounts/sales on merchandise (specifically DVDs). I don't have much extra money right now and want to make it go as far as I can.
  4. An encore performance of the show is not the same as the combined playing of America, The Beautiful (or whatever it is called). At that point, DCI is still putting on a show and has not turned the field over to the champions to do as they wish.
  5. Oh. I imagined you saying if he had fallen into the block of the corps on the other side. It would have just been a funny photo if the guy had fallen inside the Cavies block and George walked by and looked at him. Probably would have been much better that way.
  6. Supposedly, they have unwound a lot of that over the years. I suspect today's membership may not even know about those parts of the corps history. We thought something was going to happen in the parking lot after the show that night, so the members stayed together in groups. While putting up a unified front against Boston, the issue of tossing something into their block was addressed internally.
  7. I thought THAT was what drum corps of today was supposed to be. Summer bando holiday. A touring band camp, if you will. At least that is the spin doctoring that has been put on all of the rules changes over the last several years.
  8. If that is truly the case, then it is even more disappointing. Even back in 1993, you knew not to get into the block of other corps. When one of our members threw something into Boston's block at DCI Mid-America that summer, I thought a brawl between the corps was about to start. I can't imagine this kind of thing was tolerated more in the old days of drum corps.
  9. The entire organization should be ashamed of that, instead of trying to whitewash it. When another director has to make one of your own members turn their brain on, it is a problem for the entire corps. If nobody in corps leadership did not have a talk with this member after the incident, it tells me that I am disappointed in more than just rules changes (and related performance issues) in the activity today.
  10. I don't see a problem with pretending to be dead. I see a problem pretending to be dead and laying in the block of another corps. Perhaps this happened because corps so rarely do retreat and don't understand how it works or that the entire field is not theirs to be artsy with, rather than intentional disrespect. Either way, it is rather sad how far it has gone. :( Perhaps in a few small ways, the chickens are coming home to roost finally.
  11. Soon they will probably begin to propose soloists/"featured performers" that aren't otherwise members of the corps (aka "overage soloists"). These people aren't going to stop with their destruction evolution of the activity.
  12. If George tore this kid up and down, it was surely deserved. If he was clever, he would have handed the guy audition details and tell him there is a process to become a Cadet that doesn't involve laying in their retreat block wearing a Cavaliers uniform.
  13. Cavaliers were known as one of the fun corps at retreats, even in 1993. I didn't believe it until we had our first retreat with them, and they were very funny. It was one of those marathon retreats, where we went around the field before entering it. The way they carried on about it, all tongue-in-cheek as best I could tell, was hilarious. People on the outside generally had little idea what went on in the inside of these things.
  14. And this should matter to me? As a fan, I don't have to consider their problems. I only have to consider whether or not I find it entertaining. This is well known. Not sure why you felt the need to point this out. Already well known... Not offering much insight here. I don't think a corps won from outside the top 5 even under the tick system. I will go through and see...which means this particular point may have nothing to do with concentration of staff or membership talent. My point did not have anything to do with the "top corps" and where they placed. It had everything to do with all of the corps, all of the scores, and all of the placements, over an entire season.
  15. Sure, but a review of the numbers and placements would verify whether it is all in our heads or not. If we 'think' there were more placement and score swings 20 years ago, and we prefer that, then that is as far as we have to go. I know all about the boxes for design and the boxes for execution. Anybody who has marched in DCI has probably been given at least a crash course in how that works.
  16. Perhaps some statistical analysis might demonstrate any differences between the way the numbers are coming out these days compared to 10, 15, 20, and 25 or so years ago (obviously intending to not go into the tick system, which would really throw it off). There is definitely a perception out there that the performance of each corps on each day has minimal impact on their scores for that day or the progression of those points throughout the summer. I cannot help feeling that corps are often judged on reputation first and performance second. It is the major flaw in any subjective judging process.
  17. I'm sure that is how they intended it to be. Good luck rolling that back with the current set of power brokers in the activity.
  18. What would I want to see? Scores and spreads between scores that appear to be based on the performances of that day/evening, and not related to where they were yesterday, or where they might be tomorrow.
  19. That is something I really miss in the activity (one of many things, actually). The judges must be using previous scores as a guide these days much more than was done back then.
  20. I've wondered if getting out of the Bible Belt had anything to do with some of that... I'm not sure that Suncoast was ahead of their time with this production, because I'm not sure the same show would sell any better today. Star 1993 is an example of a show that was ahead of its time and would sell so much better today than it did at the time. I suspect many people would still be scratching their heads with that Suncoast '88 show. I like the show, and really like Suncoast, but I don't know if this show HAS a time to be ahead/behind of.
  21. I loved 1990. I really enjoyed all of the shows in the top 12. I don't know what problems people may have with Spirit's show, but where they came from earlier in the summer to put that show on the field Saturday night at Finals was amazing work. I liked the show when I saw it early, but when I saw them at DCI South later in the year with the Tara's Theme reprise it really moved me. Of course, Spirit has rarely put on a show that I did not fully enjoy over the years. VK was great that year. 1992 may have been their ultimate show, but 1990 is my favorite from them. I still feel like they hit their peak musically that summer and it stands up against the test of time for me (gimmicks/jokes were not tied to anything contemporary, as I recall, but rather on things that endure). I REALLY liked Phantom that summer. Great show with some great selections. Belshazzar's Feast by Star of Indiana is my all-time most favorite drum corps show. This was the year where Star really made their move. I love the intensity of the music and the way the drill sells the music so well. Over the past few years I have found myself thinking that the music was written to sell drill these days, instead of drill written to sell the music. I would rather see a bunch of shows that were more like Star 1990 than Star 1993 (not that 1993 was a bad show, mind you).
  22. It was no fluke once Boston finally powered their way in. They may have derived some benefit from the collapse of other programs as far as easing recruitment issues may go, but it wasn't like they squeaked in at 11th or 12th. They were 9th and then 5th the following year. They have been Top 10 ever since.
