  1. For those that have access, Flo Marching today has a video interview section entitled " BAC.... Building A Champion " up. Its from the 2017 Season.
  2. No, it wouldn't.. Point of fact,. The Bonfiglios asked the remaining marchers/ staffers after their DCI Exhibition Performance in '94 to not utilize their name " 27th Lancers " anymore, as they owned the name, and had it trademarked and entered into the Massachusetts Registry as such. The intent of the Bonfiglios was that the '94 DCI Championships exhibition performance would be " One Last Time ", ie their last rodeo. But some marchers/ staffers wanted to continue on with the Corps and with its name " 27th Lancers ". So the Bonfiglios went to court and secured a Cease and Desist order from the Judge that stated in no uncertain terms that it would be illegal for them to continue with the name " 27th Lancers ". So once the denial of the use of the name was mandated, the Corps changed their name from the " 27th Lancers " to " The Light Brigade ", and continued on for a few more years under that name. So no, you could not start a Drum Corps in Idaho or wherever and call them the " 27th Lancers ", if the owners of that name has officially registered that name, and do not want you to utilize it. There may be be a way out of this however, as I mentioned above, if there could be a Statute of Limitations that might... might... preclude the owner of the Naming Rights to have the name preserved for themselves and their Heirs forever. That part I'm unsure of at the moment. Its possible the Name protection only lasts for as long as the the owner of the Name is still alive. If so, then it could be legally permissable to start up your " 27th Lancers " Drum Corps somewhere. But if the Name Rights flow to the heirs at death, then its likely that you could not start up a Corps with the name " 27th Lancers " if the heirs decided to challenge your usage, Also, there was a traveling singing band that was doing the Holiday Inn level of concert tours around the Country that called themselves " The Four Tops" many years ago. None of whom performed in the legendary " Four Tops " singing Band however. They sang the songs of the REAL " Four Tops ", but were a pale, subpar imitation. So the owners of the name ( and one of the original " Four Tops "). went into Court and likewise got a Cease and Desist Order from a Judge for that singing Band to immediately stop utilizing the name that was not authorized and in which the owners of the Name ( duly registered as such ) did not give permission for its usage. A lot of this restriction and name protection is done for practical purposes too. The IRS, for just one example, can have a heck of time in determining who's who, if there are multiple units utilizing the same name, and performing similar shows across the country, ie" in Idaho, in Hawaii, in Arkansas " or wherever. Can you start up a Band, practice some surfer songs, and call yourselves " The Beach Boys " ( without the printed or stated caveat of " imitation band " ) and then go out and hit the road for" Idaho, Arkansas, Hawaii" or wherever ?. No, I would not advise it., as you'd be slapped with a court order to stop and drop that name by a judge faster than you could say " Help Me Rhonda ".
  3. Oh stop with the " money " canard. But if you insist, lets not forget that it was " money " that "lured" 7 Corps Directors into a secret room in 2010 to essentially attempt to extort all the other DCI Corps to take less " money " from shows, and redistribute to them more " money " . Fortunately, better heads prevailed, and in the end the " money " grab attempt was thwarted, DCI came through it strong, and out of those 7 Corps Directors, 6 have moved on and are not longer at the helm of these Corps. Presumably, some of these 6 former Corps Directors are making more " money" with that career choice they unilaterally made on their own to leave their Corps Stewardships too. 'Wish them well in their career decisions. No hard feelings to any of them . Most People like to be payed more " money " for what they do for their work. No kidding. What a novel thought. As others have stated, it was a combination of factors that brought the staff to Boston, and just as importantly, there are other reasons besides " money " that has kept them there, and presumably very happy to be there still with Boston.
  4. Courts and bankruptcy Judges have been known to disallow a Corps in Chapter 11 reorganization to utlize the name of their Corps. This is what happened to the Boston Crusaders for a period at the end of the 1982 season, for example. The Corps was stripped of its Name, " the Boston Crusaders " by a Bankruptcy Court in Boston, and was disallowed from utilizing the name. The Corps complied ( did not quit, throw in the towel ), went out with the Name " Boston Drum & Bugle Corps " for 3 years, staff taught mostly without compensation to help keep the Corps alive, 'got their Financial house in order, went back to Court, convinced the Court they had addressed their owed financial debts to creditors satisfactorily in the interim and the Court relinquished its Name Demand on the Corps, and Boston reclaimed their name " Boston Crusaders ".
  5. I do know that copyrights and music licensing rights, name rights are not recognized in all Countries. For just one example of this, no Corps could start a Drum Corps in the US or Canada with the name " The 27th Lancers ", nor a name close to that.. This name is legally not allowed to be utilized without the expressed permission of its owners of that name.. even though this former Corps has not existed for decades. Whether or not there is a Statute of Limitations in the US for such name preservation, I'm unsure of.( Perhaps others might know) But as I stated, not all Countries recognize US Copyrights and Music Licensing Laws. As such, a Corps abroad in such a Country could indeed start up a Corps And call them themselves the " 27th Lancers " or the " New 27th Lancers " or any name they want and indeed play whatever music they want, and not pay a dime to any holder of that music licensing rights. And thats precisely what happened in the Philippines. They started up a Drum Corps there called the " New 27th Lancers ", several years back, and there is nothing to prevent them there from utilizing that name and playing whatever they want in music ( the Corps is even currently depicted on You Tube. and has been for years now. )
  6. Corps and staffers have been freely moving between Drum Corps since DCI began. Prior to DCI, there were regional Drum Corps circuits that had transfer policies in place to restrict such wily nily, unfettered movements of marchers between Corps. It was done to add a degree of stability to the circuit. DCI decided however to allow uninterrupted, free flow of marchers/ staff between competing groups. Boston , for example, for years, was both the recipient as well as the conduit sender to other Corps of talented marchers/ staffers within the pecking order of DCI. That has not changed in decades. What has changed is that Boston has been the recipient of late of top tier staffers, marchers. But the movement of staffers and marchers between Corps is really nothing new under the sun here. That upward movement of Boston of late is the result of a revitalization from top to bottom organizationally at the Boston Crusaders. The revitalization has been accomplished with 5 year and long range plans that included making inroads into previously untapped resources, both financial and otherwise, and building a larger BOD where the talents derived from careers both within and outside of Drum Corps could be tapped into and utilized to strengthen the 79 year old Drum Corps. As was said a number of times, people were asked to " leave their ego at the door " and work for the betterment of the whole... This has allowed an environment where staffers are given the freedom to work in a collaborative and creative fashion where the end product we see/ hear on the field is the culmination of the efforts of many staffers, volunteers, marchers, alums,, and donors, both on and off the field. Drum Corps is indeed a team effort. Its not an individual endeavor. Boston's remarkable success of late is not happenstance. It evolved methodically from the efforts of many, and yes, there are quite a few people there in important roles on staff, Administration, the BOD's, Volunteers, Fleet Operations, Inspire Arts & Music, Donor Giving, etc that marched Boston back in the day as well. Quite a number of them were there helping out during Boston's lean years too, as a matter of fact.
  7. I suppose maybe thats perhaps a factor too.... I just don't know. You raise some interesting points with this, and I did not miss your subtle reference about what you are referring to here either, and it is rather curious at the least... Its true, SCV really does not have much discussion on here, but not much on any of the other social media out there it seems either. That said, discussion is down for ALL Corps, imo, as that is precisely what all the DCI Corps want in the off season, and are indeed receiving at the moment..
  8. True. Madison Scouts have a large Alum base, fan base. ( The Corps afterall does go back to 1938), and with all the changes taking place there the last couple of seasons, its no surprise they have more views , pages than most of the Top 3 Corps.... as there is much for fans to talk about re. them.
  9. You're welcome.. I've really enjoyed listening to these interviews with Boston's staff.
  10. Today, Marching Arts Education put up on their website their interview with Boston Crusaders staffers Kylee Hubbard and Michael Townshend. Their final series of Boston Crusaders Staff interviews will bring in Keith Potter, then a bit after that, they'll be exclusive footage of Boston's recent Color Guard auditions ( this last feature will be for " Members Only " of the Marching Arts Education Community there, it states on there. ) https://marchingartseducation.com/boston-crusaders-april-camp-2019/
  11. ...till ' the cows come home " ?🐄🐄🐄🐄
  12. Anythings possible, I suppose. I'm not sure a " hug " is in his future except from his current huggers however.. but who knows.
  13. I miss DCP Poster " Granny Smith " !! Where, or where, did She go ? She's a long time fan of the Troopers, and her comments on here were amusing and interesting, imo. Come back Granny !!!. Those digs on your current brand of stocking and leggings choices, hair styles, horned rimed glasses, metamucil and vitamin consumptions, etc were not of my doing, and you seemingly were able to handle quite well us whippersnappers, and young'uns. 😎
  14. To follow this fantasy further, where would the other 8 Corps go ? My guess, they'd all fold in a year or two... maybe 3 years max.. Why ? Not convinced 8 Corps with their current revenue needs could last out there alone as a 8 Corps circuit for very long. A sizable percentage of audience goers at Championships are made up of Friends, family, Alums of dozens of current DCI Corps, as wll as Fans of DCI, that want variety and more than the same 8 corps every year, and no more than 8. The. Championships would be,. at most, a 2 day event, with just 8 Corps. With the 8 Corps folding in a couple of years, the remaining DCI Corps would benefit. Quality levels from them improve, imo. My guess, a DCI without the 8, would be depleted, but in short order, the remaining DCI Corps would pick up better, more talented marchers than they have now.. and become even better. Marchers still want to march with the best.. and these DCI Corps would be the best. Great instructors won't leave. They'll go teach the ones remaining.. thus helping make them better. The remaining DCI Corps would become stronger.. at the top anyway.. just as they always have. DCI has lost lots of Top 8 Corps over the years ( including Champions ). Star of Indiana, 27th Lancers, Bridgemen, Anaheim Kingsmen, Freelancers, Glassmen, etc and the like that left us.. DCI seems to have survived it. The 8 Corps listed above are never going to leave ( or they would have by now ) as it would be financially unsustainable for more than a year or two for such an 8 Corps circuit, imo.. But if we insist, I suppose a rather compelling case could be put forth that in such a fantasy creation, the remaining DCI 20 + Corps, at least the top tier, would in short order, become even stronger than they are today, imo.
  15. I don't know .. methinks he'd even post his musings on Drum Corps, on Politics, on Life, on the Cosmos, etc from even a Prison cell block if it came to that.
  16. The 2nd round of interviews with Boston Crusaders staff is up from Marching Arts Website posted today. Today, Ryan George and Gino Cipriani's interviews from this weekend's Boston Camp. https://marchingartseducation.com/boston-crusaders-april-camp-2019/
  17. True. A political themed or politically tinged show ? DCI.. or otherwise ? No. The Theme will not be that, that much can be publically shared re. the 2019 Theme, anyway.
  18. The video does have Leon May mention that they have 120+ pages written so far.... that the team writes about a song a month.... that this weekend the Corps worked outdoors on the drill ( mentioned above also in the Corps April Camp update )... May mentioned that for example, the Baritones were marching from dot to dot in a section and Brady Sanders ( Choreography team ) was already creatively incorporating some thoughts on how the Bari's will move from those steps created for the show by Leon. So there was info shared that apply to 2019, but not to previous years, although how Leon and Keith work together is a collaborative approach in Design that has pretty much remained in sync for a lot of years between the two. Next up this week, will be other staffers at Boston being interviewed this past weekend and the interview posted either later today or tomorrow.
  19. 🌴 " Spend summers on a secluded Island somewhere ".. Fran ?.. If that should occur, does it have to be THAT secluded for you, or could you maybe receive an xtra large compass airdropped there so you at least won't feel so lost ? 🌴🌴✈️
  20. Bumpity, Bump.. bump. Noboby knows nuttin". Well some bodies know sumptin;.. lots know sumptin',... but theys want youz to know nuttiin',.. so bumptity, bump, bump, you gets nuttin'.. but soon youz will get sumptin', and when youz do, that sumptin', will really be sumptin' !
  21. I don't know. I don't recall at the moment what their comments were from last year that you are referring to here, so I guess you'll have to listen for yourself later to determine this. That said, neither the 2019 Theme, Music has been announced yet publically, so its basically just the two of them answering the interviewer's questions and talking process here in the interview. I found it a rather interesting segment, but if one is primarily looking for music reveal, theme reveal, marcher talent reveal, etc and so forth... this ain't it.... by " design "... haha!
  22. For those interested, and have access, Marching Arts Education posted today on their website an interview with Boston staffers Leon May and Keith Potter. Other Boston staffers interviews will be posted on there later this week... They will discuss what goes into their Design of the production of their 2019 Boston Crusaders show. They'll be no reveal, just insights on how the Design of the show takes place from a thought process standpoint, time schedule standpoint, collaboration standpoint, and then the ultimate on field implementation of the Show Design with others there on the instructional Staff at Boston at Move Ins come May.. https://marchingartseducation.com/boston-crusaders-april-camp-2019/?fbclid=IwAR3xABu31jjqSxGl_VoHIP76klPT-xW5SB-cqPIb466fGOx_H5fPZTZI8A0
