  1. The feeling is extremely mutual, Buffy. Don't worry, I'll come visit!
  2. I echo that sentiment. Thanks to everyone who loaned us equipment that evening. What could have been a disaster was quickly averted thanks to the Caballero administration and the generosity of many of the performing corps that evening.
  3. Fran - Thanks for the kind words about the Hurcs front ensemble. I'll be sure to pass it along to them this weekend.
  4. Off the top of my head, Reading and Connecticut are on Dynasty.
  5. I had to laugh when one of my front ensemble members said to me prior to our performance, "I bet you that it stops raining just in time for the Cabs to give a performance in the sun." I'm glad I didn't take that bet - they were dead on! We laughed about it afterwards - I always loved performing in the rain and watching the Hurcs do the same was equally as fun. Bush really brought it yesterday in the downpour - it was the August Bushwackers that we all know in this circuit yesterday...
  6. I loved 2001. Great percussion ensemble, and two pieces of music I've been lucky to play in my drum corps career (Farandole and Young Person's Guide). This is followed by 2005, 2000, 2003, 2008, and 2007.
  7. 2001, 2000, 2004 (all very close together), then 2006, 2010, 2007.
  8. I too voted Triple Crown. Finis was a close second, followed by Angelus. A special honorable mention goes to Bellissimo though, because I adored the various metallic sounds of the front ensemble that year.
  9. Touche, Vinny. I picked Spartacus, with A Harmonic Journey a close second, Rhapsody a close third (that front ensemble...), and Faust a close 4th. Come to think of it, there really aren't a lot of Phantom Regiment showings I haven't liked, at least from some perspective.
  10. We're not talking auxiliary & glockenspiels not being heard on the alumni side. You will have no problems hearing those. Piercing bells are gonna be heard, no matter mallets you use. You'll never see amps on the alumni side, which is perfectly fine. However, for the drum corps that I choose to follow and teach, the front ensemble is a little more complicated. That's fine for people like me. For people like you, you can stick to the piercing bells and the auxiliary percussion. I'll continue to utilize those instruments where they're appropriate in our program - which isn't constantly. In the meantime, I'll also continue to use the rest of the front ensemble to create musical moments to accentuate the rest of the drum corps by any means necessary, as well as create moments specifically geared to them - cause that's why I was hired. You can choose to watch, or not. But I'm certainly not gonna tell you your way is right or wrong. I have the respect for all sides of drum corps to not do such a thing. Enjoy your alumni corps, and I'll continue to teach my front ensemble.
  11. Harder mallets are great in appropriate spots, but it's just that - appropriate. A lot of times if a part is written in the lower register of a marimba, not only will harder mallets give off an awful & harsh sound, they will crack the keys easily. Amplification, like everything else in this activity, only works when done correctly. There's where the problem lies. Would I have been upset if i had to play on an amplified keyboard on tour? Nope - but only if it was done correctly. And will I be upset if amplication eventually makes its way to DCA for a front ensemble I'm teaching? Nope - but only if it's done correctly. And by correctly, I mean with proper blend and balance, being used to make a section more musical, and also prevent injuries like mine and others I've seen.
  12. I've lost count of the amount of times where I was told to literally beat the keyboard to get our point across... and after 7 years of that, needless to say I'm much happier standing in front of the pit now than behind a keyboard - my wrists wouldn't be able to take it anymore.
