  1. Boston are the ones with intonation issues. Crown brass should be on top.
  2. The brass ensembles that ranked 2-6 last night all mic individual players that are not soloists. I’m uncertain if the group that ranked 1st does.
  3. MANY groups mic their strongest individual players (30-40 brass players). Some groups mic the sidelines. Some groups do both. The problem is when the top groups mic individual players and win, then you are forcing everyone else to do it, whether they want to or not. Example, everyone loves how good the Phantom contras are. One reason they sound good is because they are all mic’ed. It’s not possible for 12 contras that aren’t mic’ed to sound like they do. Miking the sideline is not very expensive. You can do it effectively for less then the cost of one wireless mic. Miking 30-40 individual is VERY expensive. 100k expensive or you rent them for 10-20k for the summer. When people complain about drum corps costing too much, miking individual players is a cost that isn’t needed and one that is driving up the price of drum corps. It also creates a have and have nots situation that some drum corps just can’t afford to spend money on.
  4. Please like our new Mandarins Brass Facebook page!!! https://www.facebook.com/MandarinsBrass/ https://www.instagram.com/MandarinsBrass/
  5. Crossmen have gone on after Mandarins at EVERY show this year except San Antonio......
  6. Troopers are at Poteet High School, Mesquite, TX.
  7. I think many people can tell when the brass is amped or live, however if you mix a live horn line with a pre recorded horn line and it's done well, it's very hard to tell.
  8. 1 Blue Devils 2 Crown 3 Bluecoats 4 SCV 5 Cadets 6 Blue Knights 7 Phantom 8 Blue Stars 9 Cavaliers 10 Boston 11 Troopers 12 Madison
  9. I have been in LOS when a band was playing with the roof open and I really didn't notice a difference. I'm also not sure that if the roof was open you would be able to have all the black fabric to dampen the sound. If it was possible to have both, then it would be worth trying to do, but without all the black curtains I don't think opening the roof would help. The other problem with opening the roof is that it puts all these shadows on the field that I don't think people would like that would be there for the majority of the performances.
  10. Jay Kennedy is on MA, Paul McGarr is on Brass and JP is on Percussion 1.
  11. A few years ago, Michael Cesario made a big plea for drum corps to entertain the fans more. Five years ago I would only really like 2-3 shows in the top 12. Now, I basically like them all, as well as the 13-15 shows and the 16-18 shows, etc. In the past, there would be a lot of shows I wouldn't care if I missed, but now I don't really want to miss anyone. The shows are all also very different. There was a time it seemed every corps was trying to use the same formula, but now it seems every group has their own style, more so than in years past.
  12. As long as we have indoor performance venues, electronics will be necessary. Indoors, it's impossible to have enough tubas to create the amount of sound needed when playing backfield. Outdoors this is not an issue as much because the tuba sound would bounce off the concrete bleachers on the visitors side. I feel like this year, the groups are doing a much better job blending their electronics sound in with the brass and percussion. Those that aren't either are doing it on purpose because their show has an electronics theme to it, or the sound person didn't get the volumes right for the venue they were in. One thing I has found to be true, don't ever sit low on the 35 yard line...
  13. 1 Blue Devils 2 Bluecoats 3 Blue Stars 4 Troopers 5 Crossmen 6 Colts 7 Pioneer
  14. Actually, you are incorrect. The Troopers go on 1:08 after Colts, who they haven't lost to all season and beat by 3.90 two nights ago. The Troopers go on 1:25 after the Academy who they have beaten all year until last night when they won by .25. The Troopers go on 1:42 after the Blue Stars who they lost to by .85 last night and .5 the night before. The Troopers will be just fine. If any corps is going on too late, it is the Colts, not the Troopers.
