  1. I hope I'm wrong ... but I have a bad feeling this corps is next....
  2. Any discussions on this topic that I've been party to around Saktig, May, Sully or Cadets alumni resulted basically like this: The 1984 show was written based on tick system rules. Full stop. I'm not sure who pushed for the rules/judging changes that resulted in the buildup system of 1984, but the design of the show had nothing to do with it. Zingali, Twiggs, Prime were writing what they wanted to write. They were figuring out how to teach it on the fly. Visually, I often heard from Sully that they would say, "Get from here to there ...... so and so looks great ...everyone do it that way." Dot systems took time to figure out. Crab step took time to figure out. Dot books took time to figure out. But not much time. Reshape, Recurve, Subsets ... all were hands on and took many hours on the field to "figure it out". Once it worked .... always do it that way ... now figure out how to get it in your dot book. This was still happening at Cadets well into the 90's until Saktig took over and began charting the subsets. I also hope you check into the many many changes to the sheets and number of judges/captions over the years. The buildup system from 84 changed in 88 .. and many times after that. Even during the tick system there was a specific year when there was a Build Up sub-caption (not sure the name of it) .. this is before my time so I don't know the details ... but it was points awarded rather than taken away. This leads me to believe that the judging system was constantly evolving toward a total build up system. I hope this helps a bit. Best of luck with your research.
  3. I can't wait for the day when a law comes to be (40 years from now), where statements made online in 2023 can be re-evaluated as Hate Speech based on their modern sensibilities ... and we'll all be sued.
  4. I love threads like this. Now imagine being the corps trying to hire buses with no destination, housing location, mileage, hotel rooms secured for drivers, etc etc etc. Where is laundry? pharmacy? urgent care? emergency room? banks? grocery? where does my food company drop my order from US foods or the like? if I have staff flying in or out ... which airport do I tell them? I know I know ... it's hard being a fan.
  5. I did 43 shows in 1990 ... I'm still calling this a single season of undefeated 😛
  6. There have been some recent subcaption and caption wins for The Cadets that make me excited for tonight. What if they pop a number that blows up this "4 horse race"??? Is the surge back? We all know, J. Birney Crum ... she don't lie!
  7. 100% doubt there was a plan. Long gone are the days where the crowd and judges are left to "figure out" what a show means to them. They need it spoon fed. Hence, voice-overs. Not a fan myself, but if they're not getting it or don't WANT to get it .. you have to cram it somewhere.
  8. .1 win in brass content... 0.1 behind bluecoats in total brass...... HELLO!
  9. There are people in the stands....i swear it....
  10. Anything "NEW" is typically controversial in DCI. The list is long. 93 Star - "they never play loud, it's too controlled, the drumline doesn't play enough, etc etc etc." 87 Garfields perfect drum score .... similar complaints to 93 Star (same arranger) 88 Suncoast Sound - this show is OUT THERE and I loved it. 86 Garfield (backward company front - "turning their back on DCI" was the complaint) 05 Cadets - drumspeak feature I love all of these shows for various reasons. Mostly because they pushed what was possible and acted as a springboard for what was to come. Judges vs Fans? Most Madison Scouts shows prior to 2004. They were almost always a fan favorite and often heard boo's at retreat due to scoring and placement. BD "winning" all the time by playing to the sheets blah blah blah. TOo many haters with valid arguments (lol'ing at myself). The big complaints of the past were often a comparison between valuing ART over History of what Drum Corps was or should be. Now the complaints are Art vs. Formula vs. What Drum Corps was or should be. Further current complaints are Entertainment vs. Design being rewarded properly. I hear the following all the time: "I miss uniforms" "I miss drill" "I miss complete songs that I can hum and enjoy" "I just want to be entertained vs. having a message shoved down my throat" Meh .... as time passes, history will judge everything differently. Attitudes will change as new things get dialed in and perfected. Experimentation, Execution and Entertainment is what made DCI great and will continue to do so. The big question is, in 20 years what will you actually want to go back and Watch or Listen to? Last thought. I guess I look back at shows I consider a masterpiece (flawed or not) and feel there were more of them in the past compared to what we're getting now. That's a hard nut to crack and accomplish. The great ones are getting harder and harder to find.
  11. Correction ... they had 2 - 3-petes Championship titles American Legion: 1940 1948 1949 1950 1953 1957 1960 1961 1962 1964 CYO: 1984 DCI: 1983 1984 1985 1987 1990 1993 1998 2000 2005 2011
  12. I'm sorry .. but WHAT? I mean .... WHAT? Shall ALWAYS Be ... it says that for a reason. The 2023 Cadets will create their own chapter of a very long, honored and respected legacy that knows where it came from. Every Cadet, past, present and future .. are ALL Cadets. The alumni in Garfield and Hackensack are every bit as much my brother and sister as are the members from Fukushima, Rotterdam, Erie or Allentown. The NJ alumni remember when the corps was their chapter, a local neighborhood corps that had guts and grit and personality and won A LOT of championships (10 times to be exact including a 3-pete before DCI was born). They also felt a shift around 1983 when people started showing up from everywhere ... and that hasn't changed. Things change over time and The Cadets has always survived. For 89 years. The current members crave knowing that history. It's why The Cadets are special (and a little bit different). The Cadets will always be The Cadets .. even when they stray a bit ... they stop zigging and get back to zagging. I'm sorry ShouldNot .. but that comment is pretty fair to say ... OUT OF LINE. If The Cadets is your corps and you feel that way, I'm sorry for whomever hurt you. Let's figure out how to fix it. If The Cadets was not your corps ... "You have a very fine drum corps" and please move along.
  13. My words were very clear. I'm talking about NOW ... as it pertains to this topic. I never brought up the move to Allentown. Yeesh
  14. I may be in the minority, but here's my view. Current situation in the East shows a decline in shows. Marked! Consider that The Cadets started over from ZERO at the beginning of the pandemic. Consider they lost USBands as a revenue stream ... starting with ZERO means, they could afford to buy ZERO. Consider they were no longer able to RUN any shows due to making fiscally responsible decisions. (you can't take chances on a positive return if you don't have the cash to cover a potential loss) Now Consider, The Cadets are taking over the Annapolis show this year. Move to Erie is showing financial promise and consolidation of expenses in a very smart way. It's my understanding they've picked up a few clinics this year as well. If this is a new trend, I foresee MORE shows in the East in the future. If things go well at Annapolis this year, there's no reason for them not to pick up Clifton again, or Allentown 1 and 2, or more. Baby steps.
  15. I couldn't tee it up any better than that ....
  16. I can't unwind after that camp .... holy _______________ (fill in the blank)
  17. I feel the passion, but most of it has me scratching my head. There are some big assumptions about needs, plans, vision and stability that have no basis in the reality of actually running a non profit or a drum corps. Why have an office? Where do new instruments arrive and get stored? Where are camp supplies and admin supplies stored? Does the office have storage? Do they run an online store? Does the admin team and volunteers come in regularly to prep for camps and complete administrative tasks in prep for their solitary program? Does the office cost more than a storage unit? Answers: It's needed. The Office. The Office. Yes. Yes. Yes. I hear no. That's barely scratching the surface. Every time I pop on here and read the tearing down of different corps ... I'm astounded at the assumptions made based on a complete lack of information. Bad characters wishing ill will and spreading misinformation fuels panic and tribalism from those who wish the same. The Cadets will be fine. Santa Clara (I pray) will be fine. And if not ... then the touring model and modern expectations of what should be standard in drum corps will have caused the death of a couple more corps. Times change. Business models change. Staff's change. The activity changes. But, nothing lasts forever. All we can do is our best to keep it going, prospering and staying relevant for as long as possible. If this move happens for The Cadets and CAE, I hope what they find is a HOME. Allentown has done little to nothing for the corps beyond the original building they were in. This could be a chance to grow roots, create new relationships, generate new revenue streams and put them back in a position where they can run multiple programs in all seasons without having to do it with a skeleton crew and a shoestring budget. Fingers Crossed. But I still find it interesting that a Letter from a Board Member doesn't have his name spelled correctly. Cincio? Cinzio? Hmmmmmm
