  1. I remember at an indoor show someone from RAMD wanted to find me and kick my "butt." I told the person I am here and I'll wait. I was available after the show and he (I forgot who he was) never showed. I was by myself too since a crowd would scare him away! Now back then I was 296 pounds and still fast!

  2. I've seen very good small corps, i.e. Charioteers for one. The musicians could play. Some of those corps BITD were not very good. Brass players honking away to make them sound big instead of using the size of the corps to their advantage. They get a brass book written for 50 horns when they have 12. Percussion parts written for an experience line and the drummers can't handle the book. That is really on their management to find a design team to design for the REALISTIC size of the corps. I worked with a small junior corps one summer and saw the brass score and thought it was to much for the 14 horn players.

and the number of remaining corps ties into the rant you delivered and the topic at hand how?

i'll wait and stand just off of the edge of your lawn

Was it a rant? Well anyways, I thought I would be like others on DCP and change the direction of the OP. How many times do you read an OP about one thing and within 5 replies the whole post changed direction!!!

  4. Yep, we live in the, "Let's not offend anyone," "Here's a safe place for you," "Let's find an 20 year old RAMD post so we can ruin your life!" time.

Life as we knew it has become pathetic!

Now look at where drum corps is today and look where we were 45 years ago. We have maybe a 10th of the corps (MAYBE). It's the same top 12 corps every year. The smaller corps fade away. Eventually it will be top 5 corps because all the rest will cease to exist.

But maybe this summer corps won't be able to travel because of fuel costs! Another pandemic will hit and DCI and DCA will be virtual.

For the record, I was one of the founding staff people for the 20th Maine, and actually lived in Oakland and it is nowhere near southern Maine. Neither is Lewiston.  But, glad I have been able to give you a convenient target. Ironically, EVERY corps listed here went away due to horrendous mismanagement, which makes my point.

The only corps from Maine to ever have any DCI involvement was 20th, and after a brief 3 year life (including 2 DCI tours, btw) they folded because the chief fundraiser turned out to be a con man from Ohio who was wanted by the FBI.

So again, DCI had NOTHING to do with these corps going away.

Was he from NY? initials JV?

  6. How did this go from Cabs Win and Undefeated to......C2 and GH? "SQUIRREL!!!!!"

My Penny.....I hated watching Drum Corps on TV! But if I couldn't make it to DCI in person, then I'll watch it on PBS or ESPN.  It's NOT the same! Sound is different and you are forced to see what the producers want you to see. Last year for our Music Performance Assessment the directors could send a video of their choirs or bands for assessment. NO rating but you received adjudication. I opted out! Why? The adjudicators wouldn't here my students live and in person. You know, one shot! Instead, I could record my kids until I got, what I thought, the perfect recording. Besides that, it was going to cost our group the same amount of money to get less of what we used to get.

Okay so back to drum corps...... I love the Cabs and all the corps and many of you will defend the video year of 2021 because, well....it's because of COVID!

Should they have all filmed on same field? Could they have had a real LIVE championship keeping corps distanced? Doesn't that happen anyway? My memory was we were at a hotel and we rehearsed at our own rehearsal site and we warmed up away from other corps before the contest. We came in and left as a corps. Do they still do retreat or just DM's?

I could say, "what's the problem with that?" The "experts" will tell me I'm an idiot for saying that!

So, in closing......I hate video's for adjudicating purposes!

  7. So I joined the drum and bugle corps activity in 1971, a month before I turned 11. I was a trumpet player in band. The next weekend was my first parade! We actually two parades. I was hooked! After a couple of years my parents thought it would be a good idea if I quit. I fought hard and won! I entered the Army at 18 but I still kept up with going to shows in NY when I could. Got out in 1981 and started teaching in 1982. Was on staff and did marching band and somehow was asked to do winter guard too. I went back in the Army in 1985 and went to Germany. I found a German corps and helped them become the German Champions.

Throughout the years my parents would say, "Why don't you quit that crap!" I refused.

Somewhere in summer of 2004 as I was working with this corps, I felt alone. I should say I had a great fiancee and wanted to be with her everyday! I felt alone in the drum corps activity. I didn't feel like I belonged! As I drove home after a weekend, I decided that I was done! I walked away and I was okay with it. I miss it but I wasn't in the clique so staying away was easy. I love the direction the activity is going today! I may be one of a few older guys that agree with the activity today!

  8. Going to Marion was an experience! Marion Cadet Hall with affordable meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Corps scattered around the city rehearsing. The socialization with other corps members. Walking into the stadium and McCormick's trailer set up. US Open merchandise along with corps selling buttons.

I only went to World Open twice but in the 8o's and that vibe wasn't there. Same with Butler, PA. Now, mind you, great shows but Marion couldn't be beat!

I think that is one contest site that DCI should have tried to keep going.

  10. Of the 3 Open Championships, which was the best or best run show and why?

I am choosing U.S. Open in Marion. I thought the city was more welcoming. There seemed to be an excitement within the city of Marion. I remember my first year (1972) and prior to Open Class prelims we walked to Cadet Hall for a pancake breakfast and then walked to the stadium to watch a whole day of great drum corps. The Open class finals were amazing as I remember the crowd of people. Bleachers at the end zone filled with fans. Pretty incredible sight!
