  1. Good luck Crown, you have a fantastic show that many doubted earlier in the season. I sat around some older Crown fans last night, and they were great people (and even gave me a chance despite my BD baseball jersey lol).
  2. I judge the success of a BD show by how much I'll be listening to it in the future. This show will be on my aural radar for some time, even though it probably won't win. I listen to more BD shows that lost than won, so after today the numbers are meaningless. For me, this show is a home run. I'd like to see them win, but throwing a hissy fit if they don't isn't in my wheelhouse. The funny thing about this site is that the adults (in age only, of course) are the ones who generally complain the most.
  3. The Troopers are not in because they didn't execute a finals-worthy show well enough. Would this be a discussion without the X-Men penalty?
  4. Dear lord, the thread about semifinals on here is a cesspool. Every year "nice" fanbases of other corps show their teeth during finals week, but this year might trump them all. Regardless of result, I think I'll skip reading the finals thread after tonight Great job BD, you were on fire last night (compared to Thursday). Here's to hoping you guys clean up the lines in the rotations tonight. I have yet to see a performance where they're clean to the BD standard. Do it up Devils, who cares what the final numbers are.
  5. I think that's true of any top four show of any year these days, actually.
  6. Which is the exact same situation that sports referees face.
  7. I still don't like the kpop section, but it's so short that it's not a big deal for me. The music on either side of it is enough to make me forget what I didn't like. Nobody likes everything in every show, after all.
  8. I had to like any post with a Parliament reference. Heh.
  9. The judging panel this Saturday will come under fire no matter who wins/loses. The amount of BS they get will depend on which corps win/lose, of course.
  10. I haven't seen the dark uniforms live, so I have no idea whether or not they work. The one question I have is this: if this change was planned so long ago, why wouldn't you want the corps in these uniforms a bit earlier? Giving the MMs and judges time to sort of "get used to them" would be a good idea, I think. Introducing them this late in the season gives the impression that the addition is an attempt to give some kind of score bump "surprise" late in the season. I'm not saying that's the case, but it can be seen that way. I have no doubt this move was planned out by the Cadets from the get-go, and they're getting too much crap for it. If they had won in Massillon last night, everyone on the Cadet staff would be hailed as a genius by the "gurus" on here. The fact that a uniform change is making some around here say that the upper staff for the Cadets must go is utterly absurd. Good luck the rest of the way Cadets, I hope the look works for you in the end. As you can tell from the avatar, I'm far from being a Cadets homer.
  11. After seeing BD, SCV, BK and the Academy I persuaded my wife to go to Indy hehe. She had never been to a major show before, though we had been to some local ones over the last few years. She was entertained enough by the Devs in Allentown to agree to go, so I'm pretty happy about it. One thing is certain (for me at least), there are no "hot dog corps" this year. I've never been to the oil can (though I have performed in the old Hoosierdome back in the early 80s for the MBA shows). Go Devils, it will be a great trip.
  12. I haven't seen the Cadets or Bluecoats live, I was merely commenting on what I heard on Friday night. Interesting, though.
  13. I really liked Spirit's show when I saw it in Allentown, but there was one thing that really drove me nuts about their performance - they have the horses to put out a really loud, decent sound, but for some reason the synth was doubling what seemed like all of the brass parts for the major hits. A bass/tuba patch is something all corps use these days, but I thought Spirit was using the synth as more of a volume enhancer. Hopefully this isn't as apparent from up top - I was down pretty low in the stands. They used the synth doubling a lot more than the other corps imo. They don't need to. Hopefully Spirit is on the upswing, I've always liked them. This isn't a "bash", just an observation.
  14. This is a pretty good year for show design/entertainment value IMO. There are several shows I would like a whole lot more if the singing elements were removed/reduced, but other people seem to like them. In no particular order - SCV - I wish they started the show with Pure Imagination and quoted it even more in the show, but that's a small matter. This is a fun show from beginning to end - and seeing the crowd go nuts in A-town when the DM (in Sting voice) put on the red light was great! Blue Knights - I thought they might take a step back after last year's fantastic show, boy was I wrong Bluecoats - see BK above. I hope the VERY heavy use of speakers/electronics won't become a trend unless it's done as well as the 'Coats do it (unlikely). Academy - Some people are bemoaning the cheese factor with the Mary Poppins music, but I think this is a really fun show performed very well. Devils - I'm not sold on the visual (it's wonderfully executed and the CG is fantastic, but the drill doesn't do much for me), but their musical production is my favorite of the year. Hopefully GG will compose a chart for them every year! Crown - I still want them to get rid of the Ode to Joy at the end (I know why it's there, but I want them to stay in minor chord hell with a broken crown at the end), but oh well... the rest of the show is a hell of a ride (had to, my apologies) Phantom's horns - love their sound this year, even if I don't like the show design. Pacific Crest - For some reason I find myself watching that stupid cube moving around lol... and they play Whitacre's arrangement of Enjoy the Silence Great year overall. As always, there's something for everyone if you look at the corps from top to bottom.
  15. I loved "That One Second", but I didn't have a chance to see it live. "Because" is an awesome follow-up, and I really enjoyed their musical performance last night (I sat in the blast zone). I focus on the brass, and BK has a killer line this year - really exposed and very confident. Best of luck the rest of the way!
  16. The red light strip on the DM was a particularly nice touch, the whole crowd went crazy for the light effects and SCV as a whole last night. Even though there were sound board problems, the drumline without the sound effects was amazing. Bravo guys and gals
  17. There probably aren't a lot of people going tonight who are reading DCP, but to those of you who who are doing both.... Last night, the fuel fund jars of most of the corps I visited in souvie row were doing pretty badly (hopefully they looked better later). If you have a chance and the means, take a walk though and slip a buck or two thousand ( ) into the corps jar of your choice
  18. I was in Allentown last night, and the Devils were fantastic musically. I was sitting very low, so I can't comment on the drill - but I can echo what others have said about the marching technique (as always) and the impact of their guard. Their sound last night was in another ballpark from everyone else (I'd say that BK was by far closest in brass and SCV's drums seemed cleaner, JMO). That's to be expected given that the rest of their "tier" wasn't there. Their show was very well received in my section (I, near the bottom), and I made it a point to take a look back at the crowd during the K-pop part of the show - because I'm not a fan. The kids in the crowd (in general, of course) really seemed to dig it. Who knows what championships week will bring, I really enjoyed the show. Like most shows, it is an entirely different production live.
  19. Slotting exists when fans of a certain corps don't like where their favorite is placing, and this has been the case for years. Case in point: Different corps have been in different positions in the top 5 this year. Anyone notice that there has been an outcry by certain fans whenever "their" corps slipped in the rankings? They usually take this form - "they were in 1st before, why aren't they now?!?!? - how about some CONSISTENCY in judging!!!!!" In other words, their corps should be SLOTTED in the higher position, regardless of performance - or improvement of corps around their darlings. This isn't true of a ton of fans, but look at the threads from the major regionals this year and you'll see plenty of those types of posts in there. JMO.
  20. I think that the fact that the BD staff didn't have everything figured out in January is surprising to most, and that's a testament to them. That doesn't preclude such an experienced staff from making corrections, does it? I hope they win tonight, that's just the homer in me.
  21. I guess that dovetails with my "rough visual run" comment. I think it's a bigger drop in design than you do, but it's certain that the things the Devils have been doing extremely well for some time aren't being done quite as well this season. I really love this show musically. I'm more of a music guy, so it's all good for me either way. Edit: when I mean "not being done quite as well", I do mean design as well as performance. A bunch of square rolling "books" with writing on them that can't be seen from very far away is a design flaw - just in my opinion.
  22. The "ending" from the Hattiesburg show looked like another placeholder that included a few more drill sets. Even so, the Devils had a rough visual run in that show all around. I doubt this is a championship vehicle for them, but their musical performance will be something I listen to a lot in the future.
