  1. Not big on the Schilke, never liked the shape of the cup or the way it sealed to my embouchure, but I understand that many legit pros use them and a few drum corps too. I started on a Bach 12C in 5th grade for my student Holton tbn. Once I joined VK (faking that I knew how to play the G Baritone Bugle), they required all lead baritones to play on a 6 1/2 AL, which took some getting used too, but it's darker and louder and helps me navigate from pedals to the triple register. It's fantastically versatile. At SCV they required us to use a 5G, which also took some adjustment. The horn sgt. was cool about it and gave me a gold-plated one, which I also recommend. Gold is nice and easy on the skin. My overall preference is still the Bach 6 1/2 AL. Getzen makes decent tbn/bar/euph mouthpieces too.
  2. "Cal Chords" is the [band] term for a typical I-IV-V-I progression. In drum corps we call it "C tuning" or [thumbs up] "F tuning" (depending- note that "C tuning" is actually I-i-IV-V-I) Unless my historical basis is way off (and I've lived a good bit of it), "Space Chords" "Cal Chords" "Shotgun Sequence" et al. were developed by Jack Meehan* along with his hand-signaling system for chords, progressions, tuning, articulation, slurs, exercises, fingerings and dynamics (and a ton of other stuff). I have no idea why it's called that, other than it's normally played quickly and ends loudly, like a shotgun, Long ago, (like at VFW shows) they'd fire a pistol off the starting line to signal the start timer and allow the corps a 30-second warmup. That's not much time, so the old process may have something to do with calling it "The Shotgun Sequence" .... (of course -- a pistol is not a shot gun) meh. Also I'm pretty sure it's C9-->D6-->Eb-->F-->G...err well that would be for G bugles using Bb Treble Clef. The concert structure would be G9-->A6-->Bb-->C-->D. idk how this has been updated for Bb/F horns but to keep the fingerings and partials in place it's probably Bb9-->C6-->Db--Eb-->F. *phew* brain hurty! *the Godfather of West Coast hornline style and sound. Also here's a KISS-simple version for your "modern hornline" I even transposed for the F-horn. I left out the I9 and the II6 chord... I've heard many variations w/o out the weird "Hard Days Night" stuff in it and it sounds fine....cue major chord...go minor...ascend ....earie resolve and everything. I could post this to musescore, but I already have a free account and 2 spoof accounts, hence 15 arrangements! Not going to post five measures of noise but heres' a snap kiddos.... plz credit Tapper (me) if you use it, lots of changes, made it my own version all that s#!T .... you can steal just put my name on it, k?
  3. Since I'm taking a more official step back (not a consultant or a cook or both this year...M&M staff) in general my opinions regarding DCI 2017, especially div2; will be subdued or non-existent.

  4. Drum corps needs players that can march & marchers that can play. Learn from the best this year .... HoFers, Legit Pros, the cream of the amateur world and Hacks extraordinaire will be there to send this corps into the Stratosphere. SoCal students don't miss out. Capo, Mission, San Clemente, PCC, Poway, RCC, LBSU, Redlands, Etiwanda, CSUN.... you know who you are let's bring SoCal back for good.
  5. Bump. Rob p0wns on snare. West Coast style on the upswing! Next camp Feb 11-13 Bell High School.... SoCal CG, Battery and Brass let's do it.
  6. congrats. I was there on Saturday Night....my 1st DCI as a fan. Canton was absolutely sensational. Well-deserved and good for the activity. In this decade alone we've added 2 names to the list of World Champs.....more drum corps = more gooder therefore Canton's win good for all suppporters, fans and participants in this great thing of ours!
  7. I am aware of two individuals busted pretending to be BD alumni (both were cut) at least one SCV poseur... And I marched in a Sr. Corps to remain nameless alongside an individual claiming to have marched Rosemont, his talent was quite suspect, we looked into it and could find no record of his ever being a member. I guess it's sort of a compliment that it's such a big deal to be a part of a championship level corps that we've got as many poseurs pretending to be DCI alums as politicians claiming to be "veterans" of one form or another. Also a handful that conveniently leave out that they never marched in the A Corps. "Yeah I marched BD for three years"="I marched BD B for three years, I got cut from the A Corps my age out year so I just leave out the "B" when asked" sounds legit.
  8. I've had a lot of important things stolen, but none do wish I could get back than my SCV jacket. I fell asleep at a bus station for 15 minutes (trying to stay awake, fearing theft, after a looooong volunteer weekend in 2014) The theif took a bag containing the jacket. I hawked over craigslist and eBay for months but it became apparent that the thief likely had no idea how important or historically valuable the jacket is, with great regret I've come to peace with it being gone and that is most likely at the bottom of a landfill. What people may not realize are the three components this jacket represented in my life and to the corps. The jacket itself merely proves that I was a member of the hornline at some unspecified time. It's the Star and Shield that are truly irreplaceable. Many affix lots of patches but I only put on one- my 1997 A Corps Shield. 1997 represents a rebirth of a corps still reeling from the death of Gail Royer, it was in 1997 that the corps reclaimed it's spot amoung the world's VERY best. It was our first medal-finish since the championship in 1989. That shield represents everything we did to bring the corps back and secure its future; proving that we were NOT falling apart as many began to fear. The Star is the actual Star I wore on my uniform Finals Night that year--the proudest moment, the happiest moment, the most emotional moment of my little life. It really hurt to lose those things, but it doesn't change the fact that I was there, also I don't need to "prove" my talent or my experience to anyone, not anymore, also in 2016 I think I am too fat and old to wear corps jackets. Some of us West-Coasters have decided that there comes a time when we outgrow the jacket. I don't need to go to a show and "show off" who I am or what I've done. I can cry like a schoolgirl when SCV puts on a great show, or when they play "Send in the Clowns" ....you need only to look into my eyes in those moments to know who I am and where I've been. I ordered a small gold star from the corps online store and wear it on my lapel. It is barely visible, but it is more than enough. As for the Jacket, Star and Sheild...se la vi. I will miss them but the piece of #### who stole it can never take away my memories or my experience for me? THAT is my Star and Shield. I'm far from the only alumni who would kill to get a lost, missing or stolen piece of memorabilia back. Take solace in what's inside your heart and just let those external symbols from our youth go. Let go of it and you'll be able to move on (as you can clearly I've been able to do) ;)
  9. to put it even simpler - you might notice that your local baseball team isnt on TV when they are in town. There's a reason they do that --> it's not even 100 percent money-motivated. Blackout = GO TO THE STADIUM, BUY A TICKET AND ENJOY YOUR FAVORITE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THE WAY GOD INTENDED!!!! on the legal side, YT bootlegs are infringing copyright of dci and the corps. On the financial side it hurts the bottom line of the corps. If your cpu is an adequate stand-in (maybe there wont be any shows near you), well thats why they invented the 'season pass' which I believe gets you a livestream of every dci-sponsored event. also BUMP..... & GO MADISON!!! c u tommorry @ The Rose Bowl ps - if you arent familiar or greatly enjoy Madison, I mashed up a TapCast with some rare, tender juicy cuts ...you can find us on iTunes (or your favorite podcast streaming service we're on all of 'em) or here's a direct link #tapcast is #nsfw. I searched long and hard for a frack free sop solo on "You'll Never....." If anyone can name the 1985 soloist/horn sgt. I'll give you huge shoutout on part2 - which will be a review of Concord & Madison; and more rare cuts.
  10. i think that means I made a small edit recently and the time stamp changed to the post. I initially wrote and posted to a 2015 thread (which is where it appears) We use WordPress to power the BBS's CMS...Ill look into it and submit a bug report if this happens again. Are you sure that my 2015 review is posted in a 2016 thread?
  11. 'Welcome to this West Side,..... We love you Madison. Can't wait to see you at The Rose Bowl and planning to buy schwag. (How do they say it on 'Silicon Valley'?.....shhhhhwwwwaaaaaggg!!!) Especially the "Through the Years" CD set I which wore out entirely. Please Californians; show Madison some love. Any idea about the cost and logistics of moving a corps from Whitewater to Oceanside? Thank you so much for coming out Scouts. Avoiding all the YT stuff, want to hear you LIVE! Also .... BUMP!
  12. There will be an alumni mixer before the Rose Bowl show. I am not an alumni of this group so I'm not going to say which corps (heh heh) or where the mixer will be held. If you can put 2+2 together you can figure out where and when. I'm bringing lots of booze and brew-dizzogs. So come party with Tapper at an undisclosed location and time AT/NEAR the Rose Bowl, then join me for a little bit of Madison in my life and and smattering of Devs super sweet! //end cryptic rant... Oh yeah BUMP! Go Concord!!!!
  13. To clarify; Impulse is going on a FULL Tour this year, as opposed to the avg West Coast div2 corps season that ends ...about now. Traditionally, this is when corps that ARE "going all the way" make a big go at members of smaller corps who will essentially be "done" in a few days. Reason? = fill the drill spots before leaving for DCI tour. Every corps has had holes for a myriad of reasons, even the big guys; that's where the differential in tour length comes in and all "full tour" corps ...are able to get, well.. FULL. So consider that if you are in one of those corps, you can make the jump next week before they leave CA (This is a presumption on my part) these div3, div2 or exhibition members are ideal because: A) their minds are already in drum corps mode, so are their bodies, sleep cycles etc..... B) they can learn a show 10x faster than the average bear, even if they are only 14. See 'A' above C) they may have changed their minds about the "full tour" thing ...hence ready to dive in head first, hungry, Wantin' mo' HOT...I say HOT to trot that is, they got Ah say they got the Drum Corps Fever which is terminal. Are you <22 and want to go on tour with a fine youth organization with an outstanding record for talent, growth, entertainment, fun, excitement....and now a full f-----ing TOUR? Well then hit up Impulse. A Tapper-approved div2 corps.
  14. I missed Golden Empire thru Academy due to prior commitments with SCV and BD. BK-watched them do basics. 8s&8s. Looked like a MB. OUT OF STEPNESS! In July? Academy looked good on a practice field. PC-sigh I love this corps and I know about 100 people who marched over the years; the weekend only model just doesn't a competitive corps make. Rockford - traditional uniforms; even a Sgt. Chevron as opening set. Sweet horn line as usual. Clair de Lune and Gershwin a treat. Daring drill being in all white. Santa Clara- as they took the field, a passive (bored) fan said "they look tired" those words got swallowed in a gasp following the showcase opener featuring tribute drill (to Myron) Concord - horn line & cg top notch as usual.. Battery a. Hair off in time. Appreciated a soloist going for a double A.
  15. TapCast; new corps-related casts on iTunes!

  16. I speak for tens of thousands when I say, "I live in LA and I'm a Madison fan" I may even show up at rehearsal.....I can cook & serve 200 burgers, shoot out to the field for m&m, then back in time to cook taters and chicken. Too bad about the no girls thing but that's one of many quirks I love about the Scouts. Throw. Down hard in SoCal and add another few 1000 fans. Only corps Idve marched besides the ones I did are Madison and Crossmen - any corps that plays Mangione and Maynard aight with Tapper!
  17. Bump for Sacramento..... and Echano.
  18. BDB & VC been building for far longer than that. In 1991, Santa Clara became the first corps to field two corps at Nats. (VC won div 2). Since then BDB has also accomplished this. Both go back to the 80s if I recall correctly.
  19. Congrats. More drum corps from SoCal = more gooder.
  20. Kind of a poor topic, members tend to get ###### when you trash their corps. I'm thinking of 4 div1 corps I won't name.
  21. Dear Madison, I recently read that you will grace the Left Coast with your presence. This is especially valuable to the fans out here who have always and always will love you. Santa Clara has a limited tour of Cali - as there will be a Pacific Northwest component to the tour. In fact my alma mater isn't coming to SoCal...when I read that, I checked the schedule to see who would, I was delighted to that; along with Concord, YOU will be coming to LA, OC, SD and the "Inland Empire." That said, I look forward to your visit. I became a fan of you at age 14 (freshman yr - HS) the first time I saw/heard a DCI recording. I've lost to you, beaten you, arced it up with you to play 'Concierto' and "You'll Never Walk Alone." I bought your "Thru the Years" 2-cd set in 1996 the first time I met you live, and I listened to it so many times I'm now due to buy a THIRD copy (wear/tear/scratches happen when you spin a cd a million times). I did countless parades, shows, standstills and shared reh. sites with you. Always a class act. I'm certain I'm not alone when I say I'll be at many of your CA shows, I will replace the CDs and buy some other schwag at your souvie booth. You will be grateful for coming here I hope...I'll be doing my best to show my appreciation. Thanks in advance for walking with me -- again.... in 2016, Much Love, Tapper
  22. new Tapcast posted today!

  23. Bump. I support the creation of new corps in any/all it's forms. all my best -tap
  24. this being the div1 forum; the answer-->I wouldn't, because as much as I love corps and everything about it, I don't think bringing a new div 1 corps to the table would be fun at all. unless...funds were unlimited; I could roll back to the old-school style of comping corps fees to attract/poach talent. same for being a director...most of the work involved "figuring out how to get enough money to get to the next show," ...and that was in the 90s (when I started driving gas was 83 cent a gallon). To move the entire fleet from..say... California to Utah (the 1st big haul) I'd need funding I can't even comprehend. It WOULD be based in either SoCal or Sac - cuz both those places could use/deserve a div 1 corps that they can be proud of....no corps have been able to come close to filling the void left by The Freelancers and VK.
