  2. Hello all, On behalf of Minnesota Brass I am saddened to share the news of Frank Lozar's passing. Here is the news we shared on our website. Minnesota Brass mourns the passing of legendary Frank Lozar Frank “The Beard” Lozar, the heart and soul of Minnesota Brass, passed away in the early hours of September 7. He was 85. Frank was a legend in Minnesota drum corps history, performing with all incarnations of Minnesota Brass. His last year on the field with the corps was 2002, when he was 73. “We are deeply saddened by Frank’s passing,” said Eric Molho, executive director of Minnesota Brass. “Frank was an outstanding performer who gave tirelessly of himself to Minnesota Brass for decades. Our entire organization will miss him.” Born on July 4, 1929, the soprano player marched in competition nearly every year from 1947, when he first played with American Legion Post 248’s drum and bugle corps in Ely, Minn., until 2005, when he played with the Zuhrah Shrine corps. The only exceptions were two years when he served in the American Medical Corps. He moved from Ely to perform with Minnesota Brass and Hamm’s Indians. He served as the director of Minnesota Brass from 1963 to 1969. Since 1980, he had performed with both Minnesota Brass and Zuhrah Shrine. He served on the boards of both organizations and was a fundraising coordinator for several midwestern drum and bugle corps at various times. In 1969, Frank was awarded Minnesota Brass’ highest honor, the Brassy, a lifetime achievement award. He also was part of a group that was the first to initiate female members into the drum corps activity. At 70, he was recognized as the oldest competitor on the field at the championship tournaments of both Drum Corps Midwest (DCM) and Drum Corps Associates (DCA) in 1998. Named as an associate member of the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame in 2001, he received the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award and full Hall of Fame status in 2005. Entertaining the passengers of long bus trips, Frank and the Gummers (so-called because no one else knew the words as well as Frank, so they just mouthed and hummed along) were a noted ensemble within the corps long before iPods and boom boxes were a staple. Legend has it that in 1970 he sang for 36 hours straight on a trip to Portland, Ore., without repeating a song. Frank assumed all roles and was a major financial contributor who helped perpetuate the organization. Without his efforts — along with so many others — Minnesota Brass would have never attained the level of success that it experiences today. Kurt Schiebel, a longtime member of Minnesota Brass who performed with Frank, reflected on the passing of a great mentor. “We always hear about drum corps moms, the glue that holds the activity together,” Kurt said. “Frank was a drum corps dad, offering support and strength to the youth in the line. He contributed not only financially to the corps, but offered assistance to young members, whether it was outright dues support, or that meal on the road for those of us in need.” Kurt added, “It is hard to believe there is a supporter out there who contributed more to perpetuate this organization. It is harder still to think of the activity with out him.” For All We Know.
  3. Hi Everyone! I'm Erik, current director of High Country Brass. At our (planned) first performance at DATR Cheyenne this year I decided we should have a web series about the corps, so I've shot and edited an episode every time we've gotten together since then. Please enjoy, feedback is welcome, and I can't wait to see you all in Rochester in a few days! http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLp1dxepcoNfco5CTT4qeDNYAoP8dKiTv2
  4. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 11, 2014. The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps are proud to welcome Joey Pero, Buglers Hall of Fame Member and Trumpet Player Extraordinaire, to spend the upcoming Scranton, Pennsylvania weekend with them (August 16 – 17, 2014). The Drum Corps Associates show being held at Scranton High School Stadium, 63 Mike Munchak Drive in Scranton is especially important for the Skyliners due to their relocation to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area. This is their “home show,” and it is the venue in which they boldly launched their “Skyliners 2014 – Yes, Really” campaign last year. Joey Pero is a virtuoso master of the trumpet in the jazz and classical genres. In addition to his classical trumpet training at the prestigious Juilliard School at Lincoln Center in New York City, Joey Pero also counts music greats such as Wynton Marsalis, Ray Mase, and Charles Schlueter, former principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony, as his mentors. Maynard Ferguson hired him to play second chair on his Big Bop Nouveau Band Tour. Joey was the DCA Soprano Individual Champion in 2000, 2001 & 2002, and has performed with drum corps such as the Genesee Quest, Ghost Riders, Empire Statesmen and the performance ensemble, The Edge. Indeed, his drum corps soloist debut at the age of 12 caused a sensation. Joey Pero’s performance venues include the Los Angeles Coliseum, Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory, Las Vegas and stages around the world. Joey released his debut album “Resonance” in 2008 and has been hard at work on his next release. He recently returned to New York City to work on a Broadway project. His list of accomplishments and performance venues and successes would be too many to list here. Equally impressive is Joey’s work as a teacher and mentor himself. A highlight of Joey’s drum corps teaching, playing and writing career has surely been working with and inspiring performers, young and mature, in this arena. His passion, talent, flair, high energy performance approach, amazing technicality and the ability to share his expertise with students comes through wherever he teaches. For the Skyliners, historically known as a performance corps who always plays for the audience, Joey’s focus on entertainment and how to bring one’s performance to that next level, will provide an exciting and enlightening weekend training session as the corps prepares for the DCA Championship weekend over Labor Day Weekend. To find out more about the Skyliners Drum & Bugle corps, keep up-to-date with us via our website, http://www.Sky2014.org, or the Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/skylinersdbc. For those interested in marching this summer or joining for 2015, contact us at info@marchsky.org. Better yet, come see the Skyliners this coming weekend as they march in the Slatington, Pennsylvania parade and compete at the DCA Scranton, Pennsylvania show in Saturday, August 16, 2014!

  6. August 9, 2014. The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps is scheduled to compete at the local Drum Corps Associates show in Scranton, Pennsylvania on Saturday, August 16th. The Skyliners are now based in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area and rehearse at Wyoming Valley West High School in Plymouth, Pennsylvania. Therefore, the DCA show being held at Scranton High School Stadium, 63 Mike Munchak Drive in Scranton, is very much our “home show.” Further, the Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps are proud to welcome Joey Pero, Buglers Hall of Fame Member and Trumpet Player Extraordinaire, to spend the upcoming Scranton, Pennsylvania weekend with them (August 16 – 17, 2014). We invite local band members, directors and staff members to come on out and see what has been happening in the Valley, and enjoy our 2014 show - “A New Dawn, a New Day”. We also look forward to seeing many New York Skyliner Alumni at this show. New York Skyliner Alumni continue to attend shows and march in the American Section to support the field corps, and the Skyliners have been warmly welcomed back by other DCA corps and administration as well. As the Skyliners’ first season back in competition comes to the mid-season, our return has been a great success in many ways. After their Bridgeport, Connecticut DCA performance, the Skyliners also competed at the July 19th Secaucus, New Jersey, the July 26th Downingtown, Pennsylvania and Lawrenceville Township, New Jersey shows. In addition to an entertaining performance which begins in traditional fashion on the starting line in a company front, and includes some traditional Skyliner moves and melodies, scores are improving as we expect they would. Plans for the 2015 DCA season are already underway as the Skyliners will continue building this legendary drum and bugle corps into the future! A 2015 Open House announcement should not be too far behind! To find out more about the Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps, keep up-to-date with us via our website, http://www.Sky2014.org, or the Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/skylinersdbc. 13. Neither on CD/DVD or for the Fan Network, according to this item lately posted to DCA's website. The impetus seems to be putting fewer hurdles in the way of participation: no need to acquire mechanical or synchronization rights. Also there will be an award for the fans' favorite Mini Corps as determined by texting.
