Over the 15 years of my DCI fandom, there has been a strong move toward explicit theme and direct storytelling. In 2014, Crown did a show about outer space. It's pretty much the consensus view that it wasn't the greatest design, but hear me out. In the beginning of the season, there was the Major Tom introduction, an overly-long but timbrally-intriguing percussion feature, the echo effects etc. One of the (many) great things about Space Oddity by Bowie (RIP) is that it trails off at the end. The listener is left to wonder what happened to the astronaut. Did some small valve on his spaceship fail and cause him to asphyxiate? Did he go into a wormhole? Did mysterious radiation transform him into an interdemensional squid-creature? But in Crown's final narrative with added narration, Major Tom goes into space, some things happen, then he comes home. There's not a lot of space for the audience to contribute to the narrative with their own creativity. One of the reasons that I (and many others) prefer the movie 2001 (an inspiration for the Bowie song) to Arthur C. Clarke's novelization is that it shows, rather than tells. Everything is spelled out in the book, whereas the viewer has to interpret the images, etc. in the film. Drum corps, I argue, is the same way. Would Cadets 2005 been better with giant waterfall props in Liquid? Subtly and discretion can be good things, but I feel like judging is pushing everything to be SO literal and forcing everyone to tell a LITERAL story with a beginning, middle, and end. Drum corps is a ~13 minute audio-visual medium. Hard to tell a simple story in a coherent and compelling way in that time, let alone something deeper, even with narration etc. Even Crown 2013, which some see as the greatest show designer ever, basically comes down to "love is nice." TL;DR: Stop trying so hard to be "deep" and tell some profound story in your show, use music and visuals to create a mood and err on the side of subtly

I marched with Troopers in the 80s and find I still enjoy following drum corps, not only nostalgia but also keeping up with present developments and competition. I make it out to 1-2 shows a year. I look forward to the discussion and reconnecting with old friends and making new ones.

Returning from the 2015 Design Team is Visual Designer Rick Morey and Brass Arranger Matt Krempasky. New to the Hurricanes Design Team in 2016 will be JJ Pipitone as the Percussion Arranger Lennie Machado as the Color Guard Designer. Bob Kogut and Bill Solari are also contributing to the creative process in addition to their roles on the instructional staff. The team is working diligently to put together our 2016 program, Freedom, which will explore the ability to express yourself freely, choose freely, and pursue one’s dreams. The show promises to be a step forward for the Hurricanes and one that will resonate with drum corps fans. Our 2016 Open House is coming up on November 28 from 9AM-3PM and November 29 from 9AM-4PM at Amity Regional High School (25 Newton Road, Woodbridge, CT 06525). JJ Pipitone – Percussion Arranger JJ Pipitone received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Morehead State University and his Master’s Degree in Music Education from the University of North Texas. He is currently an adjunct percussion professor at Texas A&M University - Commerce. Before this, he served in the public schools for 16 years as an assistant band director in the Lewisville and Grapevine Independent School Districts in the Dallas Ft. Worth area. In addition to all of the percussion responsibilities from 6th-12th grade, his duties have included Concert Band, Music Theory, Music History, Jazz band, and Musical Theater. JJ has extensive drum corps experience, having marched for 9 years in drum corps all over the country including numerous drum corps in the up-state New York area, the Dutch Boy, the Phantom Regiment, and the Concord Blue Devils. He won the DCI Multi tenor competition in 1989, The PAS Multi Tenor competition in 1990 and placed 2nd at the PAS marimba competition in 1992. As an instructor, JJ taught the World Champion Phantom Regiment in 1995 and 1996. In 1997, JJ was the Caption Head and the Battery Arranger. He went on to teach the Glassmen in 1998 and 1999 and the Crossmen in 2000 & 2001. He also served as Caption Head and Percussion Arranger for the Rochester Crusaders and the Empire Statesmen. JJ’s extensive judging experience has taken him around the globe since 2003. He is honored to be affiliated with Bands of America, Winter Guard International, and Drum Corps International. Lennie Machado – Color Guard Designer Lennie Machado is originally from the Boston area and has been involved in the Color Guard activity for over 20 years. He currently runs L-Mac Designs, a custom design company dedicated to the pageantry arts based out of Everett, MA. In 2014, he was inducted into the Massachusetts Drum Corps and Music Educators Hall of Fame for his outstanding contributions to the activity. Lennie has served as Caption Head and Designer for the Spartans Drum and Bugle Corps, Sacred Heart Winter Guard, St. Brendan’s Winter Guard and countless other groups through New England and the US. Lennie will bring his demonstrated and award winning skills to the Hurricanes Design Team this year to help bring the color guard and drum corps as a whole to the next level. Rick Morey – Visual Designer Rick, who lives in Utica, NY with his wife Barbara, has worked in the pageantry activity for several decades as a designer with various winter guards, marching bands and drum and bugle corps and as an adjudicator. Rick established the New Hartford Winter Guard and served as a designer and instructor for them for almost 30 years. He continues to be very active as a visual designer for championship marching bands in New York, New Jersey and New Mexico, as well as for the Rutgers University Marching Scarlet Knights. He also had the privilege to design the 2014 Super Bowl Pre-Game featuring the combined Syracuse University and Rutgers University bands. He has had a longtime involvement in both DCI and DCA as a designer, program coordinator and consultant. His DCI affiliations have included Pioneer, Magic of Orlando and the Colts. In DCA, Rick has designed for the Steel City Ambassadors, 5-time DCA Champion Syracuse Brigadiers, Empire Statesmen and Windsor Regiment. Rick is also honored to have been inducted into the Mid-York Color Guard Circuit Hall of Fame, the New York State Field Band Conference Hall of Fame and the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame, where he serves as Chair of the Visual Screening Committee. As an adjudicator, Rick has judged for DCI, DCA, WGI, US Bands and BOA, as well as numerous marching band contests across the country. A past President of the New York Federation of Contest Judges, Rick has also served as a clinician in the United States, Canada and Great Britain. A retired high school counselor who was named New York State Counselor of the Year in 1996, Rick now works in the pageantry activity on a full time basis. Matt Krempasky – Brass Arranger Matthew F. Krempasky’s writing career began with the Reading Buccaneers in 1983, and has since expanded to drum and bugle corps, college and university bands, and high school ensembles from around the world. He wrote for the Bucs from 1983-1987, the Caballeros from 1988-1991, the Spirit of Atlanta from 1997-1999, and, most notably, for the Crossmen drum and bugle corps from 1986-1994, helping to return the Crossmen to DCI finalist status as well as helping them to their highest place finish in the history of the corps (6th place, 1992). He is has been elected to three different Drum & Bugle Corps Halls of Fame - the Reading Buccaneers (2006), the Pennsylvania Drum and Bugle Corps (2011), and the Crossmen (2012). Mr. Krempasky holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, PA and is currently the band director at Somerville (NJ) High School. He is a frequent performer and recording artist in the tri-state area on both trumpet and trombone. He has also studied computing and education at Columbia University’s Teachers College. In 1998, he was selected as the New Jersey Master Music Teacher by the New Jersey Music Educators Association. Since 1990, he has been a proud member of Mensa, the international IQ society.

I wonder how many people in attendance at finals aren't knowledgeable about a corps show seeing the corps production the first time during the season....I mean that they haven't watched any videos or heard any part of the corps all summer long, not even knowing the title of it at all. I would image most of those who attend finals have at least seen a video or music.....what do you think? percentage wise anyway.

The purpose of this post is for us to discuss all the interesting and fun program points of last year's shows, 2014. I want to start a discussion where we can share what we thought was cool, congradulating the creative design and the performers. Comments should be focused on how a show's element (music, drill, guard movement, costumes, props, sound effects, music choice) helps tell the story of that corps' show. I'll start the conversation with this: CAROLINA CROWN - OUT OF THIS WORLD I loved how the the "countdown" in the opener lined up with the rifle tosses. Perfectly matched with David Bowie's "Space Oddesy" get us ready to blast into outer space. And good use of amplified voices, singing the words, "Ground control to Major Tom" with mission control talk all around. And then, way later in the show, they break out into Peter Schilling's "Major Tom" as a fanfare after the drum break following the all trumpet / mello feature. There's an afternoon occurance in Arkansas where on a hot summer's day, sometimes the clouds will decide to explode and dump eleventy billion metric tons of water. A perfect set-up for a drum corps show, no? God would not have any of it, as He took His mighty hand and shoved that mess aside just in time for the 8pm delayed start. I wish He would have thrown in a big divine blow-dryer as well. We could have seen full-on versions of these great shows with no short-cuts or boo-boos. That being said, a great evening was enjoyed by all, including my two teens and their tag-along friend. I will be sharing their perspectives with you as well. The field, as expected, was treacherous and we in Arkansas thank all the participants for risking your health and well-being to give us fantastic entertainment. There were about three to four thousand in attendance at the horrid, unaccomodating War Memorial Stadium in downtown Little Rock. Despite sad, poor conditions, nine corps persevered and all represented themselves well. They were: Cascades "Turn" - Small. That is the first impression you get with this corps. Small. And tiny. And small. I do not know why some administrators and staff of these corps misstrategize how these groups should compete, because I would rather see Cascades win Open Class than for them to finish next to last in World Class. The program was well designed, but elementary in its difficulty, rightfully appropriate for its membership. You didn't see them overly struggling like some small corps tend to be subject to by an overzealous staff. Good foresight and judgement on the part of the show designers. I thought the kids did an admirable job with the arrangements, especially "Turn, Turn, Turn". They finished a distant 9th in all captions. In a open class environment, this corps would easily challenge for a Top 5 spot. Respectable. Stephen - "Not bad" Abbie - "Meh" Alex - "I wanna talk to that boy again" My rank - 9th Actual rank - 9th The Academy "Vanity Fair" - Slick, sharp and very clean for a corps at their tier level. This wonderful, elegant show features some amazing silks, and they are used to great effect by a very capable color guard. Visual is such a strong point for the corps in this very classy program featuring some good musical selections. Marching technique and execution was fantastic. I feel the brass, although good in quality, need a bit more difficulty for this show to challenge those ahead of them, and also - not hold back!!! Wonderful visual performance I think was also hampered with some design over-simplicity. Unlike Cascades, there is Top-12 talent in this corps, especially in guard and percussion. They would hang if they had the vehicle. They lost brass and music rep to Oregon. The show just feels safe and restrained and they need to just let it loose. Percussion were impressive with a nice feature. Striking uniforms with flowing capes added to the formalty of the show. The color guard was splendid, and performed with confidence. With some musical rewrites and another dynamic level of brass performance, this corps could get really interesting.... Stephen - "Wow, beautiful!" Abbie - "I want a lemonade" Alex - "I really think he likes me" My rank - 7th Actual Rank - 8th Oregon Crusaders "nevermore" - I appreciate the innovative idea of attaching a poetic narrative to a show, which the Blue Knights would also do later in the evening. The hornline and program concept is carrying the corps, plain and simple. "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe, was the DNA for the show, and the corps ably incorporated their selections into the theme. The guard did an impressive job of selling the visual. The hornline was powerful and loud, with good dynamic contrast but some obvious dirt. I have one main criticism - the overuse of sound bites!!! Now don't get me wrong, James Earl Jones narrating is something to be revered, but having him drop "nevermore" a dozen times, sometimes over brass hits is distracting, unnecessary and incohesive. That is no fault of the kids. The designers need to reduce the electronic clutter in the show. In other ways, the atmosphere set up electronically is quite nice and effective, but some refinement is necessary. The percussion slightly lags behind the other two captions who are holding their own. To improve, the narration needs to be honed better, the hornline a little cleaner and the percussion to bring some snap and aggression to their roles. It will be tough. Academy was better, over all in my opinion. Stephen - "Really interesting" Abbie - "Wow - I like dark and creepy - cool!" Alex - "I like the raven, it's really cool!" My rank - 8th Actual Rank - 7th Crossmen "Alma Gitana" - As much as you can in Arkansas, this was the hometown corps....a lot of Arkansan kids marching with Bones this year. They were getting serious and you felt it in this awesome, powerful show. Even though the only recognizable tune in this was their closer, I felt so comfortable with their selections, they were performed like I knew all the tunes already. They actually beat Boston in General Effect 1 (should have won the whole caption) and should have beaten them in Percussion. This gypsy-themed show was the turning point in the night, where the "ish" got real. There was a good amount of footwork and choreography in this show, and excellent use of accessories by the guard. Hornline was monstrously powerful, with only a small amount of noticeable anomalies. These guys and gals will solidly be in finals, no question. Stephen - "Whoa" Abbie - "Is this like from Aladdin, daddy?" Alex - "Hey that's a cross - neato!" My rank - 5th Actual Rank - 6th Boston Crusaders "Animal Farm" - For a show called "Animal Farm" there were a whole lot of macabric elements present. This was a dark and brooding show, understated and ominous. They topped Crossmen tonight on the judges sheet because they marched their shoes off, even defeating Blue Knights in visual proficiency, and rightfully so. They need to enjoy that while it lasts, because I do not see a lot of potential improvement with this program design. The hornline of Crossmen are slightly brighter and more impressionable than Boston's, but the apparently judges saw more in Boston's show, likely the complexity of its composition and integration. I liked the intensity the performers provided, and keeping the feel of it consistent. Good push at the end for a strong finish. Stephen - "The dark thing really gets me." Abbie - (Missed it - talking to boys) Alex - (Missed it - talking to boys) My rank - 6th Actual Rank - 5th Blue Knights "That One Second" - I absolutely loved the poignancy and emotional punch this show has. This was such a wonderful improvement from the corps' more esoteric previous efforts. To me, the program seems to be about recollecting memories that one second before you die, with its female narrator sending a strong message to appreciate all facets of life. The show also incorporated oceanic elements into the visual. I can get behind this program. CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN!! So crisply performed, much cleaner than The Cadets later (who, in fairness, had more difficult drill)!! The kids looked like machines programmed to march. BK had my favorite uniforms of the night, and their percussion was downright sicko. Crown's percussion better keep improving, or they will fall behind these guys. Excellent staging in the drill with very effective use of props and the poetic narrative. You can tell this program was put together by some of the best in the idiom. Stephen - "That's just cool." Abbie - "Can I get a lemonade yet" Alex - "I like the blue - pretty!" My rank - 4th Actual Rank - 4th Bluecoats "Tilt" - The best show of the night - but the Cadets were cleaner. Even with the Bluecoats playing it safe on the calisthenics and tarp usage because of the rain, they sold the bejesus out of this program. They won colorguard performance and percussion, and should have placed second in brass, and also should have won MA and GE. They will on finals week. Their cutting-edge repertoire selections were the most accessible of the night, and Doug Thrower's arrangements prove to be the best in the activity. The percussion put on a clinic and blew everyone else out of the stadium. They have the goods, people!! Well-balanced captions with a championship vehicle. There is just a slight bit of refinement needed in the hornline, and some transitionary issues to address in the program. I'll go ahead and say it, "Hymn of Axciom" is amazeballs. The transition into the next tune kills enthusiasm for the ballad. END IT COLD AND LET US RESPOND!!! Same thing goes for the final 30 seconds of the show after a perfectly executed pitch bend!! Even though the staff added a cold cutoff and a hearty "blue" (i think it's because they realized it was a problem) - staff....the last 30 seconds of the program needs work and improvement, it is anti-climatic!!! If these areas can be fixed, the Bluecoats will catch and pass Cadets on the judges sheets after they peak too soon. Get it done! This show is amazing and these performers are champions!!!! Stephen - "OH MY FREAKING GOD!" Abbie - "They're slanted all the time!" Alex - "That was awesome!" My rank - 1st Actual Rank - 2nd The Cadets "Promise: An American Portait" - To verify, this corps, with a couple of slight exceptions, is way clean and will peak before finals week. Short of pulling out a gigantic American Flag and releasing 13 bald eagles, there is simply nothing more the Cadets can add to this show. In fact, they should reduce the narration slightly. The hornline was impeccable, loud and proficient, but I can see how Crown beat them in this subcaption. I was very surprised and shocked to see the phasing in the hornline!!! Did I just watch two people out of step? The only other corps I saw do that were the Cascades. So how in the hell can Cole give them a win in Visual Proficiency? Ridiculous!!! Percussion - always reliable - held up their end nicely. The color guard was neck and neck with Bluecoats, but should not be. They did a great job of selling this show and not being overshadowed by the 150 large props on the field. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if the staff has them parking a bus on the field during finals week. Classic, wheelhouse Cadets show. Stephen - "History book - the drum corps." Abbie - "I hate school." Alex - "I want to talk to that boy again" My rank - 2nd Actual Rank - 1st Carolina Crown "Out Of This World" - The mics for Crown's singers fritzed out and they had to do the opening unamplified, just like in the olden days. The hornline put on the clinic this time. The all high-brass moment during the percussion feature was just insane - very entertaining! Percussion, while improved from last year, has only one flaw - they are not victory-quality. Some I talked to felt the excessive prominent featuring of the caption hurt the corps. I agree. They need a serious non-percussive brass chorale moment to improve GE a bit. Also, between the hoops, frisbees-to-nowhere and trampolines, there is a bit of design clutter on the field. A better purpose needs to be forged for these interesting props. The program design is interesting, but not smooth and cohesive enough to compete with the top 3. Stephen - "Dad, did they just bounce on trampolines and play?" Abbie - "I want a frisbee - yay!!" Alex - "I liked how they ran around the trampolines!" My rank - 3rd Actual Rank - 3rd Welp, there you have it, Drum Corps Community! I always like to be of service when there are goings-on in my state! A GREAT job by Robert Hesse and workers at the show who handled the elements and delayed schedule very well!!! How they can polish a turd like War Memorial Stadium and turn it into a useable venue is beyond amazing. It made the show - amazing - great memories for me and my attention-deficit-disorder-riddled teenagers, who were of no critical help.

Are you in the NYC/tristate area and want to march Drum Corps? Crimson Kings Drum Corps RECRUITING BRASS, FIFE, DRUMS and COLOR GUARD for Soundsport this summer. Who we are… For those of you who may not have heard of us, we are the Crimson Kings Drum Corps. We are a junior corps established in 1953, our history is of award winning competitions, championships and exhibitions, one of the only remaining New York City Drum corps, we march with the classic G bugle sound. Practices are “weekends only” and are conveniently located in NYC Chinatown. We offer a lighter rehearsal schedule and one of the lowest dues of any competing drum corps. If you want to march but are not sure if you have the time or money, we may be the corps for you! We have a dedicated, friendly staff and membership that have been involved in the activity at all levels. Some of these corps present and past members and staff have marched/taught include the Cadets, Cadets2, Buccaneers, Caballeros, Norwalk Drum Corps, Cadets of New York. We work hard but also have a great time! Our 2014 soundsport show includes well known classic drum corps themes and selections from Joe Hisaishi(castles in the sky, Spirited away). Our members are having a great time learning these pieces, which are popular in both the classical and drum corps world, and we know that the audience and judges will love them too! "Also, according to his twitter, composer Eric Whitacre is currently transcribing this powerful piece for chorus." This is awesome. Vienna's music is amazing, and THoA is especially beautiful. Listen to it here (she's not a new artist, though; she has 5 CDs going back to 2003).

Lately I saw a high school marching band do quite a credible job with one of my favorite pieces of music, Maurice Ravel's Pavane pour une infante defunte ("Pavane for a Dead Princess"). Thus was I reminded that this song is supposedly part of the repertoire of the Blue Stars' 2008 show "Le Tour: Every Second Counts". While I adore that show and have listened to it a couple dozen times, at least, I've never been able to pick out that particular tune in their mix. (This work should not be confused with Gabriel Faure's lovely Pavane that was used in the Stars' preshow that year.) Did they in fact play Ravel's Pavane, or was it announced but not used? If it's in there, can anyone tell me at which point I should be listening for it? (FYI, those with DCA Fan Network subscriptions can hear a corps play this piece: the Yokohama Inspires senior corps took fifth place at DCA Finals in 2002 with a program that included Ravel's mournful ditty.)

The Centurions are pleased to announce their 2014 Program: The Journey Join the Centurions as they leave their home in search of exotic new lands. The journey begins as they set off through the streets of the Great Roman Empire. Their departure is announced by the triumphant strains of the third movement of Respighi's Fountains of Rome, which is heralded in by proud trumpet fanfares from the far reaches of the field. Our regiment continues their march east, only barely avoiding being drawn into a fierce battle between Serbia and the Ottoman Empire. Tchaikovsky's March Slav is heard as the Centurions play witness to both the savage battle and glorious victory of the Serbian people. Though the sun may not shine equally on this battlefield, the melodic alto voice of the corps' mellophone section and its beautiful counter in the baritone section carry forth the story of this heroic struggle. Letting go of past differences, the corps is fed a hot meal by the King of the Great Persian Empire. It is here that they meet Scheherazade, a Queen whose beauty is only surpassed by her wit. The company finds it difficult to continue their journey, not wanting to depart these magical lands until Scheherazade's stories have ended. It is in “The Young Prince & The Young Princess” that the corps finds inspiration, interweaving the gentle harmonies of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade together to form the perfect ballad for their second season on the field. At long last, the Centurions have found a place worthy of their journey. Arriving in the city of Gath, the crew's curiosity if immediately piqued by the Temple of Dagon... or more specifically by the exotic music flowing from it. The “Bacchanale” from Camille Saint-Saëns' opera Samson & Delilah brings the corps' journey to a fast-paced conclusion, complete with percussion features, dizzying guard work, and even a few surprises. Join the Centurions as they roam through the eastern hemisphere in pursuit of greatness!
