Lance
Pick any number of corps you want, and list your top 3 favorite shows of theirs, and why you picked them. We all love different corps, so there should be some good diversity here without the need to devote whole threads to individual corps. SCV 3. 1999-"Inventions for a New Millennium"-One of my favorite DCI arrangements ever. It all worked. 2. 1988-"Phantom of the Opera"-My favorite arrangement of a musical ever to hit the DCI field 1. 1997-"Fog City Sketches"- I remember the drill feeling like a huge breath of fresh air, and the music was wonderful. Cavies 3. 2000-"Niagara Falls"-Loved the way Saucedo combined the McTee and Daugherty. 2. 1990-"Cavalier Anthems"-Gloria does it for me. 1. 1992- "Revolution and Triumph"-Gavorkna's drill is what got me really into dci for the first time. Blue Devils 3. 1991-"Conversations in Jazz"- Just jaw dropping music. 2. 1993-"A Don Ellis Portrait"-Again, great music. A staple on my iPod. 1. 2000-"Methods of Madness"-My favorite complete package from them ever, I think.
megadrive
Vanguard 3. 1997 Fog City Sketches-Beginning of the return for Vanguard, very understated show 2. 1989 Phantom of the Opera-Classic drum corps, and the big winner 1. 1999 Inventions for a New Millenium-pure unadulterated power Phantom 3. 2003 Harmonic Journey-Canon reprise gets me everytime 2. 1996 A Defiant Heart-Dark brooding music combined with Phantom is always a winner 1. 2007 On Air-Love, love, love the musical selection. Drill is ehh, but I don't care. Cadets 3. 1996 The American West-Very cool show, and I would be ok with this show being Defiant Heart, even though I am a fan. 2. 1987 Appalachian Spring-Dissapearing company front is crazy 1. 1984 West Side Story-Great, great horn book. Very emotional. Mello solo is crazy Cavaliers 3. 1992 Revolution and Triumph-First win, and Gavorkna seals the deal 2. 2004 007-Favorite show of the Cavaliers Millennium, and favorite drill as well. 1. 1995 The Planets-Great rendition of the Planets. Jupiter reprise is awesome. BD 3. 2006 The Godfather: Part Blue-One of the first shows that really got me into drum corps. Great them with some nice jazz. 2. 2003 The Phenomenon of Cool-Powerful Brubeck. Works better than it sounds. 1. 1994 My Spanish Heart-Awesome show. Just energetic all around. Lance
Okay, to try to get more into a positive frame of mind again after some unpleasantness, here's another corps I'll add: The Cadets 3. 1996-"The American West"-Love what they did with the music of Gillis and Copland. 2. 1993-"In the Spring, At the Time..."-Nice take on Holsinger's music, and I actually like the arrangement of Hymnsong better than the original. 1. 2005-"The Zone"-Great arrangements, fantastic difficulty, with strong sections across the board to conquer the demand. kdaddy
Cadets 1993 - First year I watched the DCI broadcast, so you'll see 93 in here several times - great show musically and sooo fast 2000 - A bit cheesy, but the tunes were so effective - and while I loved the frenetic tempo of 93, I appreciate the more subdued tempo of 2000 1997 - Wonderful drill, my introduction to Philip Sparke, and moments of comicality Phantom Regiment 1993 - Great collection of music, Fire of Eternal Glory was phenomenal, and the crab step! 1996 - So dark, "ballad" to open the show, chevron made by corps closing on the guard is such an awesome move 2006 - Love the Mahler, great storytelling, drill perfectly suited to the show, methinks SCV 1997 - Love Bernstein and they did a great job with his music, phenomenal closer 2004 - Old school SCV show with the magic at the end 2002 - Underrated show, Hanson and Copland were great choices Blue Devils 1994 - Oh that hornline, ushered in a new era for BD, so much cleaner than... 1993 - Loved the Don Ellis, one of the last shows where BD sop soloists hung out on the sideline for most of the show 1988 - Happy (or choppy?) days are here again in 2009... :)
xrock80
1991 Madison Scouts - City of Angels: Just a memorable show, I really loved it!! 1989 SVC - Phantom Of The Opera: Need I say more!! 2008 Glassmen - Car-NI-val: Solid performance and entertaining. 2008 Troopers - Iron Horse Express: Great concept and well performed. 2009 Academy - I'm a bit biased here, but I really like the show concept and it's well performed. Who said a memorable performances can't come from below the Top 5!!
