Choreographic Influences

Recommended Posts

Over the past several years it has been pretty cool to see a bit more diversity in terms of choreography (a bit more style/variety than years before) with various guards.

I think it could be pretty cool to see a bit more broader range in terms of choreography, especially the potential for more street influenced stuff. Thought it could be interesting to start a thread of different possible choreographic influences.

I love to see things shaken up a bit by pulling from street influences like....

(
, more)

Soul Train Dancers (more)

Earlier influences...

Also would be interesting to use costumes and props to sorts of create new shapes that are not simply a person or exaggerate features, like....

This may sound strange coming from a guard girl but I wouldn't mind seeing corps lean towards less dancing and more flag and rifle work.

I disagree.. 100%. More movement..... more footwork...

Tough to do some stuff on grass... would be cool to have some other surfaces laid down for some serious dance sections. Some corps have already done this here and there...

A tap feature with percussion break or small horn ensemble would be killer.... or in combination with equipment.

Fred Astaire - Putting on the Ritz

(great when they toss the sticks back and forth... about 1:50)

(Astaire original)

What about DRUMMERS tap dancing???????

Also, equipment has become so technical... would love to just so some crazy huge stuff on the field again.... giant flags, banners, streamers, giant, bright flashy things.

Oh yea!

Any fan of TCM can tell you that there are tons of show ideas in old films. The Astaire Ritz piece is a classic and it would be SO cool to see Scouts or Cavies do it. Tons of great music, dance, complete shows in the old films.

As a drummer I've always wanted to tap to get the drums out of my head. I took lessons many years ago and it's crazy, crazy hard. Even with 6 months to prepare I doubt even the best guards could pull it off and make it Ritz clean. Maybe if you didn't judge sideline dance except in the context of GE it could be great entertainment.

Tapping battery? Uh...no, thanks. On the street, yes. On the field, not so much.

I thought BS's attempt at film noir was excellent, but that idiom doesn't have the dance and music that mainline Hollywood did. Came off too dark to get the crowd into it like Astaire or Eleanor Powell.

Maybe some Corps could use the" footwork" choreography influence from the new $200. Air Jordan retro sneekers that seem to be a hit. The show could be brash, bold... demonstrating the perverse and compelling need for material possessions above all else. A topic on greed and excessive commercialism and materialistic wants and desires.
