BKTrumpetMom
Last year's Blue Knights had a girl on snare - she was from Japan, I believe. She was also about a foot shorter than the guys next to her.
BanditKir
I personally love the increasing female presence in drumlines that I've seen over the course of the years. It was one thing that really impressed me when I went to WGI championships in Dayton. Lots of female snare, tenor, bass, and cymbal players. I do want to point out that it really shouldn't be hard to find videos of female cymbal players... pretty much SCV and old school Spirit are the only lines that DON'T have girls in them. Here's a nice cymbal video from indoor season: Having put together a montage recently for recruiting I know how hard it is to find some freely available high quality videos of the activity so this might help. Lots of amazing shots from WGI finals: Edited July 18, 2012 by BanditKir

BanditKir
I thought SCV had a girl on plates a few years ago.... Not that I'm aware of but it's possible. I've been waiting to see a girl willing to shave her heard join that line!
Grandpa
So we're seeing some examples of girls in the line and I'm really thankful to everyone for these suggestions! But the overwhelming participation seems to be guys. What is it about drumlines that doesn't appeal to girls? Are they frozen out by male-dominated staff? I would love to hear from some of the young ladies in the lines in this thread, but many of them are probably a little busy right about now! hrnguy500
The demographics of instruments is always interesting. I've found percussion sections to be male heavy in most band rooms. I'm not a percussionist but I get a sense that there is a masculine aura about drumlines. It also seems a little stressful for girls to be in drumline, especially if they are the only ones in the line. Stupid gender role expectations.

Roark1
Until recently, I don't think that the music community, as a whole, has encouraged young ladies to become battery players. Front ensembles have been much more even, or even female dominated in some cases. For some reason it took awhile for those percussionist to become battery players. I glad too see a more equal footing for the young women that are playing battery percussion now. We will know we are really making progress when there is no longer a need for this type of observation.
