Kilties / Kilts

14 posts in this topic

I know the Kilties use that name now - but I've also seen references (from other posters and Drum Corps News / Drum Corps America magazine) that called them "The Kilts". Just wondering if they ever officially used that name or if they've always been "The Kilties"?

I think they became "The Kilts" in the '70's. In the early days they were the YMCA Kilties, then in 1969 just "The Kilties"

Actually at one time the name was the Kiwanis Kilties as well and evolved over the decades according to affiliations such as YMCA Kilties. "Kilts" has been (for the most part) simply a shortened version of the name adopted by the members and fans; and such. The corps is registered and chartered as The Kilties Drum and Bugle Corps, Inc.

After decades The Kilties (Kilts, "Mad Plaid", etc.) have recently reconnected with the "Y" and officially performed at the community ribbon cutting ceremony on September 8th of the newly built and added "Y" facility in Mt Pleasant (WI), an adjoining village to Racine. The Kilties were founded in 1934.

That is of course, another aulder spelling, such as The Stock Yard Kilty Band, out of Chicago, which was founded in 1921.
