75th Anniversary of Battle of Gettysburg 1938

Recommended Posts

According to the various programs and documentaries this week, Lee's words were "if practicable". Apparently Ewell felt his men were too worn out from the day's fighting that he did not feel it was "practicable". And if Meade had taken the initiative on July 3, he could have possibly overtaken and soundly defeated the Army of Northern Virginia and brought the war to a swifter conclusion than going on for another 2 years. Having visited the battlefield a few times, it becomes very emotional when you consider the carnage that took place in that small cross-roads town. Bruce Caton's "This Hallowed Ground" covers the three day battle in detail and is a great read, along with his 2 trilogies covering the entire war. What a period in our history!

Ray

I thought what I posted didn't sound right but couldn't think of any other way to put Lees' "less than precise" order which wasn't like Lee. Thanks Ray for the correct wording.

And yes to the carnage. What gets missing in all this is after the armies left, the town was just left with a overwhelming disaster of dead and wounded. Reason why Gettysburg has a military cemetery is the town needed a place to bury the bodies. Let's not forget this was the era where if you died in service the only way you went home was if your family paid or came and got you. That is if they could find your remains. PBS has an interesting if gruesome show on this (forget the name).

Thanks all..... Now which DVD should I start watching tomorrow.

1) Gettysburg (Martin Sheen as Lee... eh...)

2) 75th Anniversary of the Battle (mainly newsreels and a short film)

3) 1776 (finally found the uncut film of the musical on DVD..)

Well a parade is Drum Corps relevant, even if no corps were scheduled.

Night of the 3rd Gettysburg was supposed to have their 4th of July Parade thru town. Few hours before the parade, two clods stole a car and took off in town. Had a chase and that ended when they plowed into a house and injured a woman. As for the parade....

The parade had to be cancelled because all the police were looking for one of the clods and none were left for traffic control for the parade. Kinda like the last parade I did which was the Gettysburg Halloween parade. That one was postponed due to a fight at the square supposedly.

I'll post a link if I find a good article, Harrisburg papers website stinks.... Google "Gettysburg parade cancelled" for some local TV and newsparers.

Edit: I missed seeing this.... :worthy: to my dad who brought it up last night when we talked. He just hit 80 and spent a few days in the hospital from dehydration and passing out. But he couldn't miss and opportunity to harrass me about parades.

Thanks, Now I know what happen to the parade. We were all set up at Picket's Buffet waitting for the parade to get to us. The family and I hooked up the old wagon last Wednesday night and set out on Thursday for Gettysburg. Spent the Friday-Wednesday camping on the old battlefield (NYS Vol. 56 Regiment 124th Orange Blossoms). Was on the fiels for the Blue and Gray Picket's Charge. What a great and wonderful time. Had lunch, and dinner with my Great Grand PA at Devils Den and just north of PA monument. Spent a lot of time with the press core. Have many hours of recordings from the battles, musical,(Brass Bands-Drum Corps)down time, even to meeting the Governor at the opening of the Seminary Ridge Museum. Hooking up the little wagon tonight to head south again. This time to Lewisburg.

Glad you enjoyed and thanks for letting me know General Picketts Buffett is still in operation. Few years back when there was another kind of battle over placing a casino near the battlefield, the following appeared in a discussion group:

"A casino would be disrespectful to the image of Gettysburg"

... bunch of rebuttal posts about some of the tackier shops in town..

"Let's talk about it at General Picketts Buffett"

"That's not funny using Picketts name like that"

... bunch of people informing the first person that the place really exists..

At the risk of being a PITA (pain in the ###) with this, I'm doing some googling on the subject and found a new article that said more than 50 corps were in the July 2nd parade.

Miami News

Also my wife and I watched the DVD I bought some years back. There are two groups that might be corps (all you can see are the Honor Guard) and one that definitely is a corps as can see the bugles as they are being carried. Will have to look again but believe this is the group that on the bass drum can be seen "lliamsport.... 844..." and a VFW or AL emblem. IMO works out to VFW Post #844 Williamsport, PA (after more googling).

Impossible to miss wasn't it.... Heard there were plenty of parties when that sucker went down.

And if you lived north of Gettysburg and had to drive US-15 south of town, to say.... Washington, DC beltway, there was another man made thing that had some people up in arms. Until the 1980s a stretch of US-15 along there was 2 lane (one lane each way) only. Only thing between the two lanes was the yellow line. Forget how many people were killed there over the years but someone planted a bunch of steelbeams sticking upright with a smashed car on each of them. There was a car for each deatch and IIRC everything was painted ghost white. Lot of people hated it but it was (1) a good warning for people and (2) a prod to PennDot to get off their ##### and made it 4 lanes. After 15 was widened (and speed limit upper to 65  ) the cars were taken down as promised.

Only scare I had in that old section was coming around a corner and seeing someones goat standing in the berm on my side.... And to think I was worried about Bambi...

Jim, just read your post about 150th Gettysburg. Many of us there were former drum corps guys. At the battle of the bands on July 5th I was there having marched with Derry Patriots, Erie Thunderbords, Westshoremen, and Steel City Ambassadors. Several friends who were former Butler Vagabonds, a few former members of the Bridgrftermen, Concord Blue Devils, and various other corps were also in attendance. Many of the other buglers I met at the reenactment battles had drum corps experience. I also had the privilege of meeting Mr. Frank Doritte just after our brass band performed in town. I was surprised yet pleased so many reenactors were former and current drum corps people! By the way, I meet you a few years back at Gettysburg College as were waiting for the corps, Hanover Lancers, Cadets, etc., to perform for the brass band festival.

I remember meeting you Gregg, also remember your feelings on the ticket prices.

ONE of these years I have to check out the Brass Bands at G-burg. If I don't think hornsup or Mr D will be dragging me down. Hades live less than an hour away for heavens sake.....

Good to her from you.
