Suggestions for "Topic Tags"

JohnD

Recommended Posts

The current system allows you to assign up to 10 "Topic Tags" to a topic, which will help categorize the content and make it easier for users to find related threads.

Please leave your suggestions here for Topic Tags and our Community Administrators will give consideration to adding them to the list. The feature only works if a consistent, finite list of Tags are defined and used - so there is no guarantee that your favorite Tag will be added. The Community Administrators will make the final judgement on the Tags that are included.

...and "waffles" is already off the list...

meaningful tags only.

Why can't tags be generated by posters? They'd be more meaningful.

IMO no one's going generate a good list for you -- let the list grow organically and the best tags will percolate to the top.

We *are* asking for the list to be generated by posters .... right here (see topic title).

A completely random/open taxonomy adds little / no value to the intended purpose - especially when you consider spelling and other variances for the same 'key'. A collection of random words, which is what free-form tags would be, provides little value when looking for like content. A consistent/closed vocabulary will provide much greater value for the intended purpose.

In the end, you have the choice to use the feature ... or not.

I'm sure you have already considered this, but it would be great for each individual corps to have their own tag, so we can quickly pull up all topics about Santa Clara Vanguard, or Hawthorne Caballeros, or whomever.

This strategy is like twitter asking users: what hashtags should we allow you to use.

But twitter is a vast post-apocalyptic wasteland. There is a ton of effort involved in buying into the platform as a regular user. Especially regarding hash-tags as a useful tool.

Tags in the early days of WordPress were similarly frustrating. 40 variations and misspellings on one intended tag.

I get the desire to try and keep it controlled and tidy.

ALL of the requested tags, including a list of corps, have been added to the tag list ... and we'll continue to add to the list as meaningful terms are suggested in this thread.

A great example of the utility of this feature is illustrated in the "Crossmen Question" thread - where, at the bottom of the page, the system has suggested other topics with similar tags.

Unless I missed it on the list, I didn't see any tag regarding Events or the DCI/DCA/etc show schedule. Would have come in handy for my thread about the Minnesota regional being relocated to LaCrosse.
