When to deploy the "secret weapon"

Recommended Posts

Ever since the theater preview, I thought that Bluecoats would offer a surprise end-of-the-season addition:

follow the downward/upward pitch bend with a second upward pitch bend, enhancing the musical effect of the season.

Hoping they bend it ...

There are lots of scenarios here. If your show is in need of a new ending, I think a lot depends on how far back you are in scoring. Is the old ending really hurting your show? If so, you have to make the change ASAP. If it's a major re-write, again you must make the change ASAP. You need time to test things and you need lots of shows to tweak such a large chunk of material.

Some examples:

  • Cadets this year really didn't need to add a new ending until late. The old one wasn't crushing them. It was solid, worked, wasn't generating huge amounts of GE, but it didn't get in the way of them winning most shows they were in except when against BD.
  • Carolina Crown 2013 was much the same. Their original ending wasn't horrible. Got them through most of the season as a top 2 corps. Then when they added a refined ending that recapitulated part of the opener they had the complete show.
  • Bluecoats 2014 is also similar. BLOOOO's original ending this year wasn't bad at all. In fact, quite artistic and clever. They didn't need to rush to change it. It allowed them to clean other aspects of the show, clean music, fine tune, and it gave them time to think about the perfect ending (double z-pull) after the glissando effect. It's worked wonderfully.
  • Phantom Regiment 2014 is a bit different. They have undergone major re-writes this season, and not just with the ending. But their case was different. This wasn't a matter of a new ending adding some "spice" to the show. They needed to refine and completely redo parts of the show that simply were not working. In cases like this, it's about more than just an ending; and corps that fall into this category must begin immediately once they know judges are not taking kindly to the show.

Another interesting stance on this might be as follows:

  • If you have a good show, but your scores are not where you want them and you'd like to push higher in standings, then anything that can help your show be a BETTER show should be implemented immediately. Why wait and take the chance that judges don't buy it? After all, your job as a staff is to make the show better. Now, not later.

SCV should unleash the Bottle Dance at Finals this year! ok, maybe not....

Since this year's show is "Sheherazade", would it now be called the "Magic La(m)p" Dance??

I've been waiting for that question to come up...thank God all other posters have more class than I do. :peek:
