The "Music Corps Should Do" thread

Recommended Posts

I don't want anybody to think I'm a big Horner fan or anything. He ripped himself and others off a ton for sure, but there are a few really remarkable cues that he wrote. The one from Field of Dreams I posted earlier, Battle of the Mutara Nebula from Wrath of Khan, and then this wonderful little cue from Searching for Bobby Fischer.

Maybe another chess show from CC? (mostly joking, please no)

Also, I posted this exact link to Mahler 1/Mvmt 2 when I started this thread.

And I just listened to it for the first time since I posted it.

WOW. It's a spectacular performance.

Last year I saw a small high school band play:

--"Ironheart" by Thomas Bergersen (2010);

--"The Stag" from Cinderella by Patrick Doyle (2015); and

--"American Overture (for Band)" by Joseph Willcox Jenkins (1955).

The Jenkins has been played before by corps, although never by a Finalist, and could stand reviving, but all three pieces could be very effective I think.

(The band also used a very small lighting effect surprisingly and highly effectively, vaguely like Legends did this year but not too much like that, and they also did nicely by having featured brass players perform while lying on the ground, a la Blue Stars in 2016 (and some other corps from time to time).)

Frank Ticheli's Vesuvius would be nice to hear again.

Other than Bloo using Creep in 2011, it surprises me that more corps haven't latched on to Scala and Kolancy's arrangements of modern rock hits. Could be some amazing stuff in brass writing. Their covers of With or without you, Everlong, and Nothing else matters comes to mind.

I think this gets mentioned every year, but Alpine Symphony from Strauss. Please and thank you.

Another version of Danzon No. 2 (originally Crown 2010) would be great to hear again. Bloo or Madison, maybe?
