The "Music Corps Should Do" thread

Recommended Posts

In my armchair-designer moments, I like to imagine a very angry, ######-off Troopers corps stalking onto the field, cigarette stubs clenched in their teeth, tobacco stains on the uniforms, the  guys with 5 days' stubble -- to the "House of Cards" theme as pre-show music:

. . . and then the moment the show begins, go immediately for the jugular -- to hell with a soft buildup; we're going with closer-level megaballad intensity from very start --  with a great recent cover of "House of the Rising Sun" by the Heavy Young Heathens:

. . . or maybe use the first 1:45 of Rising Sun as the pre-show music.

Ballad: "I Will Rise Up," Lyle Lovett & His Large Band:

This would be a glorious ballad. O Magnum Mysterium -  Lauridsen

The fortissimo section at 3:30 would be amazing on the field.

This has been suggested at various times and places around DCP forums over the years, for the obvious reason that it is magnificent music, and would be transporting in the hands of a capable, and loud, DCI brass ensemble.

Sadly, as has been reported at those same times and places, Morten Lauridsen is very tight with permission to O Magnum Mysterium, as this composition apparently has very personal meaning to him, connected to loss of family/friend. So it's unlikely we'll hear this, though if a corps manages to obtain permission, I make the motion that they automatically win DCI.

Never caught the post by HFS when posted before, but this is beautiful.  Some day maybe it will make it to Finals.

I want corps to explore movie soundtracks more. I loved Boston's take on How to Train Your Dragon, would really like to see some of James Newton Howard's works get played on the field.

And I'm not sure how many Game of Thrones fans there are on here, but Ramon Djawadi has just been getting better and better every season, the 7th season soundtrack is phenomenal, plenty of music that could support a full show with a wide range of musical and stylistic variety

Yes!  But not just the obvious ones.  One of my favorite high energy symphonic pieces of all time is 'The Ride to Dubno' or 'Ride of the Cossacks' written by Franz Waxman for the 1962 movie Taras Bulba.  I looked at DCX/Corpsreps and saw that Madison used something from the overture in their show (haven't checked the show out yet) which may or may not have included elements of Dubno.  In any case, it is a piece and soundtrack with a TON of low hanging fruit.  Just great stuff.

A LOT of good music from the movies - new and old.  Rich place to dig.

It would need a little fleshing out probably, but: "Driver's Seat" by Sniff 'n' the Tears.

Spirit, Bluecoats, or any other corps that doesn't mind doing this sort of style. Bonus points if the rapping section is included.
