Jamie Manning marched with the Boston Crusader's from 1977 to 1979. In 1977 he was a member of the Crusader's snare section at the ripe old age of 12. Despite only being 12 he could well have been the best snare Boston had that year which is not a slight on the other older members he was just that good.

1977 was a very competitive year. The fact that the Crusader's percussion section were able to finish in 12th place despite having an undersized percussion section that consisted of only 5 snares attests to the fact that he was not the only talent in that line.

Jamie went on to attend The New England Conservatory of Music and was a student of the late great Alan Dawson for many years. His favorite gig was sitting in for Aretha Franklin's percussionists for a show in Providence R.I. after receiving "an emergency call" just hours earlier. For those of you who know Rudy Gowern Jamie is his Uncle.

I have been trying to copy the video of the performance but have not been able to. If your interested you can find it on youtube at Jamie Manning Best drummer in Boston.

The video of Jamie was obviously taken during the finals of the Best drummer in Boston competition. Their had been many preliminaries competitions held around the State in order to choose the 30 or so finalists. Before the finals the emcee walked on to the stage and warned all the participants to not go over the prescribed time limit. He added that their had been a very sad moment during the preliminaries when a young kid who definitely would have made the finals had to be disqualified for going over time. He was talking about Rudy Gowern. It would have been cool to see Nephew competing against Uncle though I'm sure Rudy, as good as he was, would have conceded that it was not his time to take down his magnificently mulleted Uncle.
