Once Great...and then came 1972!

This is NOT a slam at DCI! Just to get that out of the way.

Since it's a slow time of year there were many corps who were at the top of the drum corps world and for whatever reason, faded away into the sunset.

The corps from down the road from Buffalo, Mighty St. Joe's for one. The bad boys of NY State placed 7th at the US OPEN in 1971 being beaten by Blue Rock, Des Plaines Vanguard and St. Rita's to name some other power houses.

Lets look at 1972 US Open and the first DCI Championships which were a mere 5 days apart.

That 1.8 penalty the Cadets got at DCI was HUGE.

In comparing caption scores from Marion to Whitewater....

Garfield beat Bleu Raeders in M & M by 3.0 at US Open/1.0 at DCI

Bleu Raeders beat Garfield in percussion by 1.30 at US Open/0.25 at DCI

Bleu Raeders beat Garfield in brass by 1.3 at US Open, but Garfield beat Bleu Raeders by 0.45 at DCI

Garfield beat Bleu Raeders in GE by 2.4 at US Open/0.2 at DCI

Bleu Raeders improvements in GE and M & M were big in that final week.....without those the penalty wouldn't have been enough to keep Garfield out of finals.
