Mini Corps 2016

Recommended Posts

If only there was a way for mini corps to both take it seriously *and* have fun...

I hear ya....it can be a fine line to walk, I guess.

Last year, Freelancers, Bridgemen, and Brig Juice were some examples, to me, of groups taking it seriously (meaning playing well) while having a blast performing and making it fun for the audience.

Random mini corps question, specifically as regards the Ghost Riders:

Why does CorpsReps list one of that mini corps' standard repertoire items in the early 2000s as:

"Georgia on My Mind (from Taxi!)"

Is that "Taxi" the TV show with Judd Hirsch? "Taxi" the Harry Chapin song? Some other taxi? And whichever it is, what does it have to do with the Hoagy Carmichael song?

According to CorpsReps (plus this thread for 2016), these were the number of competing mini corps each year:

1993 -- 7

1994 -- 7

1995 -- 6

1996 -- 5

1997 -- 5

1998 -- 7

1999 -- 7

2000 -- 8

2001 -- 8

2002 -- 10

2003 -- 9

2004 -- 9

2005 -- 12

2006 -- 11

2007 -- 18

2008 -- 11

2009 -- 13

2010 -- 10

2011 -- 7

2012 -- 7

2013 -- 4

2014 -- 11

2015 -- 8

2016 -- 5

This pretty much confirms what I thought before doing the research.

If you add the total number of minicorps, then divide by the number of years of the show... you get an average of about 8 per year.

What that proves.... I have no idea. LOL

It is only entertainment for DCA. I have been told this many times.

The corps that took it seriously are mostly gone. Ghost Riders are only the latest on the hiatus list. Mass Brass, Erie, MCL, Golden Eagles, Lambertville, Skyliners et al...have just decided not to do this anymore. We took it more seriously than most realized. It just became too much work and not enough fun! We were doing it wrong.

Ghost Riders are still performing in concert and parade activities. Contact Doug if you would like to have GR at your function.

DA

Yep every year I competed or should I say "entertained" by DCA standards at the minicorps show we always took it seriously.

If "taking it seriously" means an organization tries to present a quality product performed in a professional manner and doing as well as you can, that's what it should be.

Coming in first place, if that's the overriding priority with a minicorps- then there is a problem.

Sad to think that it was but a few short years ago that they were considering capping the entries because there was a danger of there being too many.

Yet we've also had several years when there weren't a ton of entries. We had four mini-corps one of the years in Annapolis.

According to CorpsReps (plus this thread for 2016), these were the number of competing mini corps each year:

1993 -- 7; 1994 -- 7; 1995 -- 6; 1996 -- 5; 1997 -- 5; 1998 -- 7; 1999 -- 7; 2000 -- 8; 2001 -- 8; 2002 -- 10;

2003 -- 9; 2004 -- 9; 2005 -- 12; 2006 -- 11; 2007 -- 18; 2008 -- 11; 2009 -- 13; 2010 -- 10; 2011 -- 7; 2012 -- 7;

2013 -- 4; 2014 -- 11; 2015 -- 8; 2016 -- 5

And also pulling information from CorpsReps, this is the corps as ordered by number of appearances in the 24 years of mini corps competition:

Edited in response to Cathie W.'s affirmative answer to this question: Is "Dream" in 2005, which CorpsReps indicates was based in Los Angeles, the same organization as SoCal Dream?

Yep..

Not every group can be a Future Corps calibre show. Some have to write and stage based on the talent level of the personnel they have to work with.

But it seems that is what is expected by some.
