Lead
Same. I had 4 kids march this summer. And I am at a competitive program in Indiana. I'm not saying ALL directors do this. But some do.
CaviesFan17
I have personally never experienced this. Neither have I...My band director encouraged us to audition for dci. I actually had 2 friends on Crossmen in 2014 from my high school band
N.E. Brigand
Can someone explain to me the hate that marching bands have with drum corps? It feels so backwards to me. A friend who marched Boston in the 90s actually had his band director in high school try to kick him out of band because he marched. I have personally never experienced this. Me neither. Our director had the Bluecoats in to do a recruiting pitch in 1988 or so. And we twice hosted Cadets while I was there. (It wasn't a very good presentation, though, so it was probably ten years or so before the band had anyone march in a corps.) But besides the concern about corps taking students away from the band programs, I gather from occasional comments at the Music for All forums (which have been "temporarily" offline for six months or more now) that some BoA practitioners / admirers feel that drum corps is, by comparison, un-musical. N.E. Brigand
For a long time it was supposed to be Glassmen... :( Yeah, three times at fifth place. So promising, so sad.
jjeffeory
Santa Clara was the 1971 VFW national champion, and the Cavaliers won multiple national titles pre-DCI. Cadets have some too.
StuStu
I think the prejudice against drum corps goes back a few decades when, to be honest, musicality occasionally took a back seat to high, fast and loud. In this era, though, the musicianship is quite staggering.
Jeffe77
We have been lucky to follow DCI the last 10-12 years with the possibility of 2 new DCI champs and since then they have delivered. It will be a while before that happens. PR was the last first time Champ in 96 before Crown took it 2013. That's 17 years! So it may be 7-10 yrs before we see a crop of new corps jumping into contention.
Michael Boo
No. LabMaster. Cadets have already won National World Class Division Titles in both Pre- DCI, and DCI years. ( although its true Boston has won National Titles, pre DCI) In the pre-DCI era, Cavaliers won the American Legion National Championship in 1966, 1967, and 1969, and won the VFW Nationals Championship in 1957, 1959, 1961, 1962, 1963, and 1967.

Northern Thunder
Cadets have some too. Brasso mentioned the Cadets earlier in this thread.
