Why are the 1995 audio recordings so bad?

I bought an audio track of one of the 1995 corps from Fan Network a couple of years ago to see if it sounded any better than the video, and it sounded just as bad. As far as I can tell there's been no remastering except for the two corps they did for the collector Blu-Rays.

Do you know which are the two corps they remastered?

Why do they sound so bad?  Because somebody knew how to do it better. Funny thing is he didn't.

If I remember correctly, this was the first year that Tom Blair was not involved with the project because he had moved on to another employer (could be wrong).  Audio recordings were a MESS for the most part until he returned.

Also what made things worse with the mic placement is the proximity of the cement wall that bordered the seats to the field, unlike Camp Randall for example, there was no such barrier. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That said, the mic placement coupled with the cement wall bouncing the sound back created a terrible sound environment for recording. Every unison roll, especially from the snares was dirty per the recording, not so live. Case in point, Blue Devils Triplet snare drum roll in Day Danse, sounded horrific. All the high frequencies bouncing off the wall contributed to poor quality.

May not have been an issued if the mics were higher. Wasn't a problem in 1990.

That roll sounded horrific live :-).

I remember hearing it and thinking "ouch!".

IBM did the audio/video in 1995 and 1996.  They didn't have any experience with it.  I'm still sore over how bad the '95 audio is.  From what I remember back in late RAMD/early DCP discussions, the masters were recorded that way, so there's not a lot to be done about it, even if there was the money or will to do it these days (which there most certainly is not).

I'd have given good money to get quality recordings of the 1995 Madison Scouts.
