How would you breathe life into Indy?

ok DCP needs to sponsor a post-show event each night to keep George from being bored!  i nominate @2000Cadet to be event chairman!  @DrumManTx can be the host :-)

(i guess i'm easily entertained -- i  go to corps rehearsals during the day :ninja: )

That sounds good. Some kind of bar/pub crawl or something. I'm very social so I need some FUN after shows, I can't go to sleep at 11pm when I'm hyped up!

When I was in Indy for a convention and I was staying downtown I thought to myself at 10pm...it's really dead in downtown. And it was a Sat. night.

Exactly. Crickets!

I don't know what is outside of the city.

Perhaps this is an angle DCI could take. Each year, pick a side attraction a small drive away from the oil can venue, and highlight that in the ads for finals. Perhaps work out some group discounts. Tim K mentioned the State Fair. There's the speedway, which has tours, museum, and racing experience. On google maps, I see a Children's Museum and Art Museum just north of town (but still within the I-465 loop). I'm sure there are other places, of various levels of "kitsch." I'm sure some travel agency would love to become the "official excursion supplier of DCI" and plan the transportation logistics for those that don't have their own transportation while in town.

Of course, this could potentially take people away from attending prelims and semis, especially the early corps, so I'm not sure how to handle that.

Would people be interested in DCI-planned activities? Group trip to the fair and speedway? Bus tour of some of the different corps rehearsals? If there was a marching music museum, would that be of interest?

Welcome to DCP.  Where someone starts a thread for creative thoughts. Giving us a theoretical unlimited budget to work with and 90% of the replies are "I agree that Indianapolis sucks. I'm out."

I'm trying. And full disclosure: I've never been there. Yet.

here's what finals week needs: Open Mic solo/ensemble competition.

think about how much musical talent is walking around, between alumni, fans, current performers who've been eliminated. the venue/timing could be tricky, maybe it's an after show thing maybe it's in the afternoon on Friday/Saturday. there are some detail challenges, sure.
but imagine an open mic solo/ensemble competition. $X to participate each day, nothing high maybe $10 or $20 just to keep the riff-raff out. best judged performer by an 'expert' panel wins the pot. supply the basic instruments, see what happens.

I've wandered into some impromptu soloists in parking lots that were showing off killer stuff, and you know watching drum corps gets all the alumni itching for the spotlight again.

just saying, i'd queue up for this.

Let's be clear. People have complained about Indy FOR. YEARS. Granted, most of the gripes have been about the stadium itself, but Indy IS boring, and I'm not just saying that because I'm from New York City.

Why are we stuck with Indy?  Bring it to Nashville, at the Bridgestone Arena.  Within blocks you can walk to tons and tons of live music venues, great restaurants, the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, The Country Music Hall of Fame, and so many awesome things to see that you can't visit it all.
