Cappybara Posted June 17, 2017 Share Posted June 17, 2017 SOOOOO the offseason is almost over but not quite over yet so why not keep it going while we wait another week for the premiere? Been watching Youtube videos and the topic of closers came into my head. There's so many ways to end a show and some fall flat while others have the audience off their feet 1 minute before the show is over. My favorite closer has to be Phantom 2003. That Canon in D reprise is a ####### masterpiece, and combined with the power wedge and leg kick-out, very few moments in DCI top it in my opinion. Let's start from the most recent and work our way back. My two favorite closers this past season were from the Academy and the Cavaliers. BK in 2014 and 2015 were absolutely unreal emotional experiences to watch unfold. Phantom Regiment is pretty much the king of the closer. 1989, 1996, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012 all stand out. Cadets are the "Prince of the Closer" in my mind, as their closers are almost always a whirlwind of sight and sound. 1983, 1987, 1990, 1993, 2000, 2007, 2011 and 2012 are some of my favorites, although I may have to do some discovering and re-discovering in terms of this closer type. Crown's closers from 2007-2009, 2011 and 2012 were extremely fun and memorable. SCV's had some good closers too, not the least of which is 1988/89. Some other great closers that they've fielded include 1999, 2000, 2008 (the most underrated closer ever, IMO), and 2009. Madison is another corps that knows how to close out a show well, too. 1988, 1995, 1997 and 1999 are closers that everyone remembers and lives, but I also loved all three of the closers from 2011-2013 as well. There are other great closers from other corps that I haven't mentioned, but my eyes are fading. So is there really a "best" closer? Not in my mind, or at least I've seen enough shows to know that there are so many good closers out there to enjoy. Any good designer or fan knows that it's important for a show to go out with a bang (or a whimper, if appropriate). Also agree with BK 2014 being the most emotional I've witnessed. Madison...to many great ones to mention just one. (But if forced Carmen 2005 and Empire State of Mind 2011) OF COURSE TILT!!! D: Agreed, but also agree that PR is the king of the closer. 89, 96, 03, 07, 08. Wowsers! Although 1988 Madison Scouts closer pretty much sealed the deal for my lifelong love of drum corps.
