The first Mount Carmel "preview" show was held in 1969 ... I was there with Sky ... it was a most festive event for both the corps and the fans ... the corps got to see each other and check out their wares ... plus ... perform in a relaxed atmosphere, where the only competition was for fan (and peer) approval ... a chance to get over the jitters and get he kinks out ...

1972 saw two "pre" Field Shows ... Mount Carmel and Ithaca ... both exhibitions ... both fan filled ... one in the evening (PA) and one in the afternoon (NY) ... complete with the show, after-party, pretty good brawl in Ithaca ... an escort outta town ... every corps was pretty well primed for the season opener in Hamden CT (Hurc's show) the next weekend both years ...

So ... we're talking 48 years ago that this concept was instituted - and LOVED by all ...

I don't understand all the rhetoric ...

:-)

I don't understand either...with that putz's contentious,  bloviating rhetoric He didn't mention the performances.  We have always had opening shows that were exhibitions and I'm also not a big fan of people who hide.

PS: Ajlisko, remember Evening With The Corps?

We even had exhibitions the night before finals weekend at one time. One was at Reading Municipal Stadium. I remember that one from 1982 and or 1983 for a specific reason. Frank got Pepe to come out with him and he listened on the sideline 50 to a rather razzed up Westshoremen hornline that really wanted to light it up for him. His comment to Frank--

"Dose kids can play!!!"

Most of us weren't tilted to the box, the horns were tilted at him. :innocent:

Meant a lot to all of us- even though we might be a buncha farmers from out in da Midwest.

So...no scores the night before prelims at one point in history. :guinesssmilie:

Absolutely.  Back in the time of the "prelims and finals on Sunday" format, there was an exhibition the night before.

My first couple of years with Sun, there was one in the Easton, PA, area... then we did the one in Reading after that. It was a good "test run" for any changes we had made for championships.

1980... we were on early at Reading, and the corps left for our hotel in the Hershey, PA, area...but my brother (Sun's director that year), myself, and a few others stayed behind to watch the rest of the show (and, quite frankly, to grab a stadium beer and a couple of hot dogs...LOL) ... and we were glad we did when the Buccaneers came out and did what might have been their best performance of that season to date. They were absolutely on fire that night!!!

Putz, contentious, bloviating, a person that hides.  If you were my wife you could possibly call me those things, since you're not (waves pointer finger) you can't and I don't hide unless the grass needs to be cut.  I guess we can meet after school at the playground? :sneaky:

I feel the need to speak as I do, as a fan and in the past being deeply involved, I feel the need to advocate for the performers.  There is nothing wrong with an opinion.

And for clarities sake it was not the idea of all the directors as stated by several people in here.

(Don't hurt me, I'm new- and I hope you all don't mind me jumping in)....

I attended the Wildwood show with my husband and child.  It is the first DCA show we have ever seen- I never even knew DCA existed until this year!  I loved watching DCI on pbs when I was younger and was fortunate enough to have nearly the whole staff of my HS marching band populated by DCI people so I have enjoyed those shows over the years.  When my own children were young I took them to DCI shows to inspire them to practice (weird plan really though since they both played violin which isn't a drum corps instrument...well, it wasn't at the time).

The Wildwood show was great.  The venue was small enough that we could really see the show and hear the individual instrumentalists, and see the the front and each performers moves.  My usually disinterested newly teen child was really engaged in the performances.  We clapped and cheered and found something exciting about each group.  I have never understood that idea that someone else's successes takes away from your own so it was easy for us as a family to celebrate the great parts about each group.  My older child joined one of the corps this year (thus how we found out about DCA) and we were impressed by them just as we were the other groups.

All but one group had trombones featured with varying success, another had actual french horns (I love the French horn to the dismay of my family).  It was interesting to see and hear the play with instrumentation.  Certainly we could see the potential in all the shows and enjoyed them immensely.  As a family though we felt the cabs needed to do more with their featured dancer- just waving the costume around was a bit boring...but certainly we can see how there could be a lot of drama with her position.  We enjoyed the energy in the fusion show, but at some point it felt like there was just too much going on (where to look? where to look? too much so just no where)..otherwise we loved everything we saw!

Mother ...

Thanks for coming out.   Drum Corps is awesome isn't it?  Without your support corps like The Cabs can't give their members what they need to perform.  That $19 dollars helps.
