Rufus67
Rather than Open/World class corps would it make sense to do Classic/New instead? As DCI moves further toward being Cirque-light, with the attending increase in costs for props, costumes, etc., would it not make sense to have a formal place for corps who can't/won't keep up with the arms race and instead field a more traditional corps? They would have separate judging standards/panels, could still appear in the same venues/competitions, but would broaden the marching arts market for folks who aren't quite sold on the direction DCI is taking (that would be me) and others who can't press the change accelerator down far enough.
Slingerland
Very few 16-21 year olds would want to perform with a "classic" (aka "old") style corps if they have the option to perform with corps who are seen as being on the edge. And what would "traditional" mean? Which era? So there'd be few performing units, little participant interest, and very little audience interest (the old timers performance at DCA is sparsely attended, and those are the fans who are supposed to be the most into "old school"). More to the point, there is nothing stopping any corps right now from simply deciding that they'll eschew electronics, use G horns, etc, etc, etc, so what you're proposing as a new option already exists.

This would inevitably be viewed as the haves and the have nots. The audience for old style corps is increasingly aging and shrinking, on average, and younger fans are coming in expecting to see what they're getting now. Economically the new would dominate the old. In the cost-benefit analysis it just doesn't make much sense. That's not even addressing the main issue: Which corps, exactly, would choose to be in the "Classic" division? I don't think the number is as high as you might think.

Rufus67
There are already have and have nots so why not formalize it? DCA is doing its best to turn into DCI-light and struggling at that transition. By tying them to the "New" shows you secure revenue for them. By keeping it "traditional", however you define it (more marching/no prancing, uniforms, etc.) you cut the costs down and still provide an outlet for kids wanting to march. You also avoid the "get off my lawn" of some of the older audience members. In the end it's just an idea, though.
