2017 World Championships Finals - Aug 12

In the context of how DCI scores shows all season long, final point totals are literally not comparable from one season to the next. A 95 this year is not a 95 next year. It is all relative scoring. Not point additions and subtractions.

I'm a bit late to the party, but was Flo as bad tonight for everyone else as it was for me?  Absolutely horrendous quality, worse than any other time this season.  If it was a connection issue, it wasn't on my side.  Not acceptable for Finals night.

It actually worked perfectly for me. Was on a roku with wired internet connection, and with a 65" screen i wouldve noticed resolution dropoffs pretty quickly.

My only disappointment was cutting off the encore.

Never thought of this, but it's an interesting idea. I like seeing women in percussion and carrying tubas; guys in the guard. I like that corps go for the best talent they can get in whatever section.

That said, and now wondering if a 2nd glass of Cab is messing with my critical thinking: I also like Cavies and Scouts. Plus that Phantom had all girls in the guard doing girly things. It isn't so much these things as absolutes. Rather, it's that this gives us variety out on the field.

The issue people have with Phantom this year in that regard is that the "male" corps proper was chasing the female "fantasy" character, which was dressed... provocatively, to say the least. Taking the helmets off of the corps proper or adding males to the guard would work to alleviate some of the concerns the design choices brought up.

Cavies and Scouts, with their all-male memberships, actually are at an advantage in this regard. Knowing that the membership is all one gender, they can either keep the headgear on and keep the uniformity, or they can take the headgear off and emote to the crowd. Interestingly enough, both groups utilized both styles in their shows this year.

It's also a reason why I am in favor of corps ditching headgear as time goes on... it emphasizes a gender-neutral look for the corps proper. Most groups you look at with shakos, helmets, or aussies, and it (obviously) gives off a very uniform vibe, one that is typically more masculine in appearance. Take the headgear off, and you see the diversity and mixture of the corps members. There were almost certainly females in Phantom's horn and/or drum lines, but the uniformity automatically has your mind make the distinction that they are all male. Compare that to the Blue Knights, where one could see the variety in gender and other factors, emphasizing a personal connection with the audience while keeping uniform with the outfits and similar hair/makeup stylings. WGI figured this out from the start, to great effect.

Hey, I've got a better idea that would work more effectively.

Why not just have all the Brass, Percussion and Guard members go completely nude from the waist down!

Would be truly ground breaking to see the "Diversity and  Mixture" of all the corps members "Inies and Outies."

I also had no problems and also use a roku with wired internet.

We cut the cord years ago and have learned to not use wireless for streaming.

I mean, there's nothing in the rule book against it...

I'd like to make an observation, and an appreciation I suppose.  I park in a lot across the street from the lot where the busses and equipment trucks park. Each year after finals as I walk to my car, the kids are pouring into the lot. People, myself included, often compliment the kids, and this year was no different. I think the kids like hearing from fans. Usually the kids are a bit more lively, but tonight they seemed appreciative but emotionally spent. I attribute this to their being so tired after working so hard, and when I looked at rehearsal schedules on Facebook, it did seem they worked harder this year. So we had so many great shows, but it was the result of hard work thst while not forgotten, can be taken for granted.

So marching members, staff and instructors, volunteers: thank you and get some rest.

The Cavaliers and Madison Scouts are missing out on talent by being "all-male." I remember seeing the clip of the Scouts playing with the INpact group and wondering if any of the young girls might have asked one of the Scouts members, "Could I march with the Madison Scouts someday?" It really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me to bar an entire gender from a drum corps - and tradition accounted for, it still really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me to bar an entire gender from a drum corps. But whatever. The Cavaliers are still my favorite corps.

But... misogyny? Maybe. Perhaps it's also misogynistic to field an all-female color guard. I don't think it happened this year (I can't remember seeing a male PR guard member... also I'm also older than I was yesterday), but I know it's happened in the past, and I really hope it doesn't happen again. Regardless, if we're truly wanting to have a rational discussion about misogyny in drum corps, perhaps we shouldn't wait until after the scores are announced on finals night when many fans' emotions are already in overdrive. It makes one wonder if, perhaps, the one crying "misogyny" is only using such an allegation as a means of masking other frustrations.

As for "Men Are From Mars," I think it's the darkest show fielded this year (BK's show is a close second). When people say it's about toxic masculinity, I feel like they're missing the deeper message. At its core, I would argue that it is not about mankind, but instead, humankind, and its propensity for self-destruction. The Mars/My Way mash-up has been trashed all season long because it "doesn't make sense," and I don't think it was ever supposed to make sense... at least not in the way those who hated it expected it should. War is not beautiful, and it doesn't make sense - but time and time again, war is man's way, humanity's way, and even the way of the gods themselves. So, yes, The Cavaliers wrapped up this message in a cute little self-deprecating bow of toxic masculinity, but it is only as misogynistic as it is also misandrist.

Goodnight, y'all. It's been a ####### amazing season. Thanks for welcoming me into the DCI fandom, and already I can't wait for next year. <3
