Cadets 2018

Corps migration between Corps of staff and  marchers has gone on in DCI since DCI began in the 70's. George Hopkins himself ( as many long time DCI followers here no doubt know ) wasn't " home grown " in the Cadets. He never marched Cadets. He marched, and later came to the Cadets, from the Crossmen. Colin McNutt did not cut his teeth in Drum Corps in the Cadets. He started out Marching Boston, and on the staff at Boston, before years later being hired by George Hopkins and the Cadets for the Cadets Percussion line. The pivotal moment is the DCI emergence of the Cadets in the early 80's was when George Hopkins was able to secure George Zingali away from the 27th Lancers of Massachusetts. Zingali was an outstanding drill designer at the time. These are not zero sum games. Once George Hopkins secured  Zingali to the Cadets to write his visuals at the Cadets, the Cadets soon took off placement wise,( and 27th Lancers with this key loss were never quite the same, went into quick decline placement wise, then folded). Every DCI corps is chock full of staffers/ marchers that began their Drum Corps initial experiences not in the Corps that they made their mark as staffers later. And yes, even the Blue Devils have key staffers/ staffers/ marchers over the years that did not start their Drum Corps experience in the C, B, A Corps of the Blue Devils Organization. Some did. But most of them there didn't. So there really is nothing new under the sun here regarding  the annual migration of staffers and marchers between Corps. In such migrations where there are no compensations between Corps for the movements between Corps, there will naturally then be " losers " and also " winners " in these such annual migrations of staffers/ marchers. You want to  be on the winning end of these migrations, not the losing end.  BD has been.. and has little turnover of key staffers there. To the Cadets credit, for over 35 years they have been on the winning side of these annual migrations of staffers. marchers. ... again, that began when a pretty much down and out Garfield Cadets Drum Corps was able to secure the services of George Hopkins to run the operation..... George Hopkins from the Crossmen... and he then he put his new Corps ( for him )  back on the path to greatness there, to his credit..

It was Dr.Richard Santo who was director when Zingali came to Garfield Cadets. Hopkins was but a drum tech who later was entrusted with the directorship after Dr. Santo resigned. Zingali was a tech for the Cadets for half of a summer under Dr. Santo after GZ  being let go by 27th and before he wrote drill for Garfield Cadets. Many unassociated with the corps besides you have incorrectly given that history.

Fair enough regarding the timeline, and who hired who at Cadets ( you'd know this better than me ).  Bottom line ( my central point ) is that Zingali, nor George Hopkins were " home grown " by the Cadets, as both came to the Cadets from other Corps first ( Hopkins, the Crossmen... and Zingali, 27th Lancers ). Cadets are not unique to this. Most, including BD, had many of their key contributors in staff and marcher talent emigrate to these Corps from other Corps first.

If you keep going backwards in time, on the west coast, a lot originated in Casper WY, and Stockton and Anaheim CA.

True.. TJ Doucette did a lot for the BD Guard over the many decades ( 30 years ) for the Blue Devils, as just one more  example of Corps recognizing talent from other Corps and being able to capitalize on that talent and being able to bring that talent to their Corps. Doucette wasn't even from the west coast. She was from Massachusetts and marched Reveries and North Star in Ma., and was on the staff of several DCI and WGI units in New England for 5 or 6 years before she went out to the West Coast in the early 80's to then later become an integral part of their future years Guard success there with the Blue Devils,.  She's stayed at BD the last 30 years. Doucette has helped BD win 18 Color Guard caption awards during her tenure there at the Blue Devils, and in a key caption too if you want to win or place high in DCI. She isn't " home grown " either by BD though. Most of the best of the best in staff and marcher talent in DCI  with the perennial TOP 12 Corps, are not " home grown " by their Corps. Some are. But most arn't.

George mentioned in the live stream tonight there would be four vocalists who would be moving. I could probably guess what they’re doing... but we will see!

Yes, looks like 4 vocalists who will also have other show responsibilities. The Cadets are auditioning for one extra DM; C2 also looking for one more DM. Visual audition for Nov.12th will be on the field at Met Life Stadium where average temps there then would be 55F. The Auditions in Texas will be at Cypress Ridge H.S. outside of Houston. At auditions, Cadets audition mms while mm auditions the Cadets and whether it is the right fit. This is why live auditions preferred to video auditions.

Show announcement will not come for awhile as some choices still to be agreed.

Tour will start June 16th heading to Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Washington, Oregon and California (not in that order Breakdays in Seattle, San Francisco and Boulder, Colorado.) Cadets will host 1 Clifton show; show at Franklin Field at UPenn, Philly on June 30th; show at Annapolis, MD; and one at Chester. Second Clifton show date is moving to Greater Boston area.

Show music and titles will not be announced immediately. Shane G. is steering the design committee.

Band show this weekend with 68 bands had 7000 participants and 5000+ paid spectators. Other details for the half hour talk on corps FB.

To further clarify regarding home grown:  TJ went to BD after 1982, a year she was with Boston.  82 was also a year where BD had Jay Murphy on staff also previously with Boston.
