pbeau
So much to love about this show! Horns are superb and those bari features, wow! Staging is such a departure from last year but it works so well. Looking forward to the closer!

Very melodic, very elegant and beautiful. Regal even. SCV last year and this year is a whole different corps. They’ve moved onto something much more aggressive and frantic. Their horns have a harsher sound, they’re playing many more technical passages, and I feel like they’ve strayed really far from the style I enjoyed from them. It’s very foreign to me. I honestly really disliked Ouroboros. I can’t say the same about this show. There are some moments where I’m just thinking in my head “this is a little too much, ease off” but overall I like this show, probably one of my favorites of 2018. I just hope they go for something less aggressive next year - Edited March 9, 2021 by Kazadar1

Well I had nothing to fear, I actually think I may like Babylon better. Were you AT Stanford last night? There was absolutely nothing harsh about their hornline. Powerful, full and crystal clear is what I would use to describe their hornline at Stanford last night. This is a championship caliber hornline. Best I've ever heard their hornline in June. I think video, even on Flo, is so different than being there, and you just don't get the full impact on video. In fact, I heard a harsh passage in BD, and was surprised. There was not one harsh passage to be found in Vanguard last night. Babylon is so different from Ouroboros and anything before, and I think that in itself is huge. To be able to do a complete 180 and come out better than you were last year would seem like an impossible thing to do. Babylon is outstanding. You may need to see it a few times. I wasn't impressed based on the Periscope I saw from Clovis. Last night I was completely awe-struck by their show. Floored really. Spectacular. It is going to be really tough for anyone, even BD, to beat this show at finals. But, alas, it's June and way too early to proclaim them champion. Finals morning may even be too early to proclaim a champion. But, they will be challenging for ALL caption awards at finals. There is absolutely no doubt about that. When I say a harsh sound I should clarify and say that I am not talking about the quality of the playing, but more with the delivery. The hornline itself sounds fantastic, I can see why they beat BD last night. There is a sense of urgency and aggressiveness from their hornline that was absent in previous years. I'm not too used to hearing SCV like that, and so it's a bit of an adjustment to me. But all in all I do really like this show after watching it a few times. Would definitely not mind them taking the gold!
ThePlanets
From what I heard/saw this show is a powerhouse. I wish them the best this year. I am hoping this is SCVs year!
TRacer
While two completely different idioms, the intense chord progression in the last :50 of Metropolis is a very faint, ghostly hark back to the final chord progression in SCV’s opener in POTO.

The corps has finally taken their name seriously and pushed the envelope of what it means to do drum corps. It's hard to be "Vanguard" when you're doing the same thing for 5 years in a row. van·guard /vanˌɡärd/ noun a group of people leading the way in new developments or ideas. "the experimental spirit of the modernist vanguard" a position at the forefront of new developments or ideas. "the prototype was in the vanguard of technical development" If that's not what they are right now.. then ####, I don't know what is. The time for being dainty and safe is over. ComeHomeShane
Gaines continues to be a master at staging. The general flow of the drill is so fluid and just simply makes sense. However... I'm really missing that 'wow' factor so far. I realize the closer is not in yet, and Gaines could be saving his big trick for the end. But so far there is not any moment in the drill that gives it that 'Gaines' touch. A big picture sequence that's innovative and fun to watch unfold 10X in a row... Also, is it just me or does the corps look small? I counted 72 horns. The majority of the drill seems compact, without spreading its wings in Gaines fashion. Aside from those grievances, really enjoying it. The medal battle will definitely be a crazy one, but as a future dino I would love to see a classic 'cool music + cool drill = cool show' type design beat prop race to the moon. kinetic inferno11
I just thought of something that might explain the "closeness" of the drill and what not. The story of the tower of babel (which technically wasn't in actual babylon but it seems that's what the show is supposed to represent and that's ok) explains that the whole point of the tower is for the people building it to make a name for themselves and to bring people together. So maybe that's why the drill isn't very spaced out. Maybe in the closer the drill will be spaced out as if they are being "scattered" away since that's also in the story. I'm probably overanalyzing it but I can't help but wonder if that was what the design team was thinking. Just went back and read their program description. It actually seems as if this is supposed to take place after they get their language scrambled. So I am probably way off of this. Still an interesting thought I guess.
